Anxiety can feel just awful. Sometimes when we begin worrying we just can’t stop, even if we know there’s nothing to fear, we want to get rid of anxiety and we know our reaction is way out of proportion. Soon we’re feeling terrified and our body’s gone into fight or flight mode.

No one wants to live with anxiety hanging over their head all the time, but it can be tough to work out how to get rid of anxiety once and for all.

There are a huge range of options for people suffering anxiety, from counselling, to medications, to massage, aromatherapy, and meditation. Using combinations of these is usually what makes people get rid of anxiety and sometimes it can take a long time. There’s no magic cure and patience, both with ourselves and with the treatments we use, will help us along the way.

You might want to try some affirmations. An affirmation is a ‘declaration that something is true’. When used in self-healing, it involves using sentences in our lives that we may have never thought of using before.

Some people say the affirmations in their head. Some say them out loud or sing them or chant them over and over. Some people look in front of the mirror and look into their own eyes when they say them. Others might choose to say or read them before they go to sleep and when they wake up. You could even record them and play them as you’re going to

sleep. Stick post-it notes on your mirror with them written on, or all around your computer. Whatever you choose to do, the idea is to keep them visible so you see them as often as possible.

The point of using affirmations is to create powerful internal dialogue that will replace some of our less healthy thoughts and get us on track to greatness, helping us to get rid of anxiety. It may feel really weird at first, thinking or saying some of this stuff. We might feel uncomfortable or feel like we’re lying, or we might get extremely emotional. Whatever our reaction is, we can push through it. At the other side of our discomfort is positive progress. The discomfort will pass.

Okay, so here goes. 8 affirmations to get rid of anxiety:

1. I have a right to be here as much as anyone else.

Sometimes anxiety comes from a feeling that we’re not as good as other people. This affirmation helps us to remember that we should value ourselves just as much as others.

2. I have a right to stability and peace in my life, and I claim my right.

Sometimes we might feel that we should be anxious, but this is simply not true. We deserve stability and peace and we have to reach out to capture it for ourselves. No one else can do it for us.

3. I can make a positive difference to others every day.

Anxiety can make us look inward a lot, living in our thoughts. Looking out for others and trying to brighten up their day and make them feel better about themselves is a great way to step outside our minds and to enjoy having the power to make a difference.

4. I love myself deeply and unconditionally.

The vast majority of us have problems with loving ourselves deeply and unconditionally, which is the cause of a lot of unhappiness, depression and anxiety. Making a commitment to learn to love yourself is one of the best investments you can make in your future. You cannot get away from yourself or become someone else, so learning to love yourself is a must for a happy future.

5. My future is bright. I look forward to it with happiness and hope.

Anxiety usually involves worrying about the future. Because we don’t know what happens in the future, it can be scary. This is a normal fear that everyone gets from time to time. The problem is, though, that fear does not reflect our future, it creates our future. Our anxiety changes our behaviour, responses, thoughts, wishes and relationships, meaning that it changes our future. Hope and excitement about the future is a better base to create from. Diverting our attention from anxiety into hope and excitement is a great choice.

6. I have the power to make this a productive, meaningful day and to make progress towards my goals.

7. I feel fear but I know that love is stronger than fear. As my unconditional love for myself and others grows, fear will gradually fall away.

8. Fear is slowly leaving me. My love is growing every day.

This affirmation confirms the intention that was set out in affirmation 7. It talks about a process that is already ongoing. It might feel difficult to say this, particularly if we feel it isn’t true, but our words can set the process in motion. Saying it before we feel it can be a powerful way to change our own feelings.
