barsuk records

STREET DATE: AUGUST 24, 2010

Ra Ra Riot’s debut full-length, The Rhumb Line, was released in the summer of 2008, and it brought with it some beautiful and sparkly ruminations on the fragile things in life (namely life, death and love), much critical praise, and the kind of success that’s measured not just by sales (although 65k US album scans and 130k US track downloads is nothing to sneeze at these days for a brand-new indie artist) but by appearances on Letterman, Ferguson, and Conan, plus Lollapalooza, All Points West, and Sasquatch festival plays.

After spending much of the summer and fall of 2009 alternately touring the US with Death Cab for Cutie, headlining their own packed shows, and retreating to a country property in upstate New York to write and record, the band announced this summer’s upcoming arrival of their new album The Orchard on the eve of a 2010 appearance at the prestigious Coachella festival.

Anticipation is feverish for new music, and the new album is an incredibly self-assured step for the band, delivering both hook-laden pop jams like first single “Boy” and the new-but-familiar-to-live-audiences “Too Dramatic” and ruminative slow-burns like the Anton Chekov/Kate Bush-inspired “The Orchard” and album-closer “Keep It Quiet.”

MARKETING NOTES• The Rhumb Line has scanned 65k albums and 130k tracks in the US, and those fans are

eager for new music.

• Limited-pressing deluxe edition includes a DVD with a beautiful 38-minute impressionist behind-the-scenes documentary on the writing and making of The Orchard.

• Full college radio campaign will be augmented by major-market modern rock and triple-A commercial campaign around pre-release single “Boy” and follow-up “Too Dramatic”.

• National press campaign being run by Nasty Little Man; we expect TV appearances around release date in addition to the usual great coverage in all major music and lifestyle media outlets.

• National ad campaign will include Pitchfork, BrooklynVegan, Stereogum, Hypemachine and dozens more online outlets plus tastemaker print stalwarts Under The Radar, Nylon, Venus, Blurt, Bust, The Big Takeover and more.

• Extensive pre-release track-leak of “Boy” and super-compelling album trailer campaign hitting all major blogs, plus diverse media sites from IFC to last.fm to YouTube. See what’s getting people excited at www.rarariot.com.

• Ra Ra Riot is a touring machine, and their time on the road in support of The Orchard will start a few weeks after release with a 4-night stand in NYC, appearances at Treasure Island, Bumbershoot and Music Fest Northwest, and will hit pretty much every city in the country.

• The Orchard was mixed by Death Cab’s Chris Walla and Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij; ties to both bands are strong (in addition to their work on this album and playing shows together, Ra Ra Riot frontman Wes Miles and Batmanglij’s experimental R&B/electronic Discovery collaboration was released on XL last year to strong response).

• In-store play copies and posters available through your friends at Flea or your friendly Redeye sales rep. Just ask.

Critically acclaimed comedian Margaret Cho is set to release an album of comedy songs on her own Clownery Records this August. “I want to create a new genre of music that is hilarious but also seriously good, so I turned to some of my music heroes to help me out,” says Margaret in reference to her forthcoming album Cho Dependent. “I have wanted to make an album like this forever. I love comedy music!”

!e lyrics on Cho Dependent, which tackle issues of sex, drugs, rock & roll (and lice), may be laugh-inducing, but Cho has made no compromises when it comes to the quality of the songwriting and production. A"er “My Puss,” a hilarious rap parody Cho recorded impromptu-style with friends, became a surprise YouTube hit, Cho began to integrate more comedy music into her live stand-up shows. With Cho Dependent, her #rst comedy music album, Cho got a chance to hone her cra" with some of the top names in the business.

“Over the years of being an intense music geek I got to meet a lot of my heroes and I tricked them all into writing songs with me,” explains Cho. “Most comics want to be rock stars, and most rock stars want to be comics, so it was an easy exchange.”

“!ere are so many amazing people I got to work with on this album,” Cho continues, “Jon Brion, Fiona Apple, Tegan and Sara, Andrew Bird, Ani DiFranco, Garrison Starr, Meghan Toohey, Brendan Benson, Rachael Yamagata, Carl Newman, Grant Lee Phillips, Pa!y Gri"n, Ben Lee, Kevin Barnes $ I still have to pinch myself!”

!e many collaborators on Cho Dependent seem to be equally excited about working with Cho. Australian indie-pop artist Ben Lee, said that working with her was “one of the most surprising and unexpected turns” in his career. Canadian folk-rock duo Tegan and Sara, also blogged about their experiences recording with the taboo-busting fun-nywoman, whom they called “outrageously talented and funny.” Tegan Quin writes “imagine %& hours of laughing, singing, eating, laughing, talking, eating and laughing and you might have a bit of a clearer picture of what our two days and nights were like.”

Ultimately Cho hopes to raise the bar for the genre as a whole – and get a li'le recognition for her contribution to the cause. Her motivations for this la'er goal however are naturally as subversive as her humor. “I want to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and on Elvis Costello’s Spectacle so I can talk all serious about my songwriting ‘process’ $ which is basically trying to #gure out what rhymes with ‘dick.’”

HighlightsCho Dependent music videos are being directed by YouTube sensation Liam Kyle Sullivan. Sullivan is best known for “Shoes,” a comedy music video and YouTube record-breaker, which has garnered over () million views.Cho will be heading out on the road with her guitar in hand for a major nationwide US tour, August *+ –December %*. !e Cho Dependent shows will be a special evening of brand new stand up comedy, mixed with a few live performances of Cho’s comedy songs.Publicity will be handled by Ken Phillips Publicity.Margaret will likely be a guest on !e View, and several late night shows.Margaret is playing ) shows at Bonnaroo, alongside Conan O’Brien and Aziz Ansari, as part of the festival’s stellar line-up. Brendan Benson will sit in on several songs with her.Margaret will be performing and moderating a panel at ,-’s New Music Seminar in July and will have op-portunities to promote the album.

Artist: !!! (a.k.a. Chk Chk Chk)Title: Strange Weather, Isn’t It?

Overview "A party-starting institution" - Pitchfork

"Like a fantastic electro Reservoir Dogs - cool, dangerous and out of control" - NME

“Everyone’s got a Berlin record in them and I guess we just wanted to see what ours would sound like,” !!!’s lead singer Nic Offer says, with tongue partially in cheek, of the group’s fourth album, Strange Weather, Isn’t It? Following in the footsteps of artists like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Depeche Mode, who have flocked to Berlin in order to mainline the city’s legendary dark energy, !!! traveled to the German capital to produce a record that is simultaneously brooding and somehow their poppiest, most immediate record yet. !!! has also managed to create the best distillation of the chaos, fun and intensity of !!!'s live show yet.

Strange Weather, Isn’t It? was co-produced by the band with Eric Broucek, who used to be the house engineer for DFA Records. “We used everything we could – MacGyvered it together with a popsicle stick and a rubber band to make it work – and Eric was definitely instrumental in making that happen,” says Offer. The result is an album that is leaner and more detailed than any of !!!’s previous albums. “In the early days we’d put something deep in the mix, so that kids on acid could hear it the 20th time they listened to it,” says Offer. “Now we’ve learned how to make records better. It’s like the deep techno you hear in Berlin; it’s molded down to its most basic essence, almost like a sculpture that you keep working on to make it both denser and clearer at the same time.” Offer pauses for a moment to consider what he’s saying. “Don’t get me wrong, though, you should still check the record out on acid. Trust me.”

4 years post their critically-acclaimed debut EXITS, alt-rock phenomenon The Boxer Rebellion self-released UNION digitally while still in day jobs. Recipient of the first global iTunes Single of the Week, lead track ‘Evacuate’ generated a staggering 560,000 free downloads, propelling UNION to No. 1 on the iTunes Alt. Album Chart; Top 5 iTunes US and UK Albums; and 82 on the Billboard 200 in its first week! By the end of 2009, iTunes hailed UNION their ‘Alternative Album of the Year.’

In an unprecedented move, The Boxer Rebellion are taking the ‘new-radio’ of film and TV syncs to another level altogether, by performing 2 tracks from UNION live in a major motion picture. Opening nationally this summer in 3,500 screens “Going the Distance” stars Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, and Christina Applegate, and will put The Boxer Rebellion in front of millions of moviegoers throughout the United States and the world.

Known for their exhilirating and uncompromising live performances, TBR were invited to play 6 over-capacity gigs at this year’s SXSW generating coverage from the likes of AOL, The New York Times, Live Daily, Nylon, Paste, Filter, Spin.com, LP33.tv, PopMatters, Live4Ever, Popwreckoning, The Austin Chronicle, Shockhound, and The Wall Street Journal’s much-heeded Jim Fussili, who wrote, “this band may own 2011.”

Hailed by music blogs and industry pundits as a band spearheading a wholly independent and innovative approach to releasing records, The Boxer Rebellion will be appearing live across the US from mid-September in support of the UNION album. 2011 will see the release of a follow-up studio album, produced by Ethan Johns.

The Boxer Rebellion are Tennessee-native Nathan Nicholson, Australian guitarist Todd Howe, and Englishmen Adam Harrison and Piers Hewitt. They are based in London, England.

Grass Widow Past Time CD / LP Selling Points: l + Grass Widowʼs first full length album on Kill Rock Stars + In 2009, Grass Widow released their S/T LP on indie imprint Make-A-Mess Records as well as a 12" EP on Brooklyn label Captured Tracks. + Touring the U.S. and Europe in late Summer/Fall 2010. Overview: l Bassist/vocalist, Hannah Lew, drummer/vocalist, Lillian Maring and guitarist/vocalist, Raven Mahon chose the name for their San Francisco-based three-piece as a way to represent the approach they take to writing music. The phrase is rooted in 17th century literature; commonly referring to a woman whose husband is away at sea, but the visual associations of each word also provides an opportunity to interpret meaning on multiple levels. “We write lyrics about very personal and often dark subjects, but present the ideas in a way that disguises the content within metaphor and upbeat instrumentation.” Influenced by similarly all-female punk and post-punk acts like The Neo Boys and Kleenex, they also note Roy Wood's The Move and The Kinks as a major source of inspiration, which can be heard in their three-part harmonies, complex arrangements and odd chord progressions. Grass Widow is also influenced by a legacy of women who have paved the way through their music and politics. Their collaborative songwriting process, the fact that they don't have a front person and that they all equally contribute to the work of the band speaks to this philosophy. In addition, they take the opportunity as an all female band to bring attention to the roles of spectacle and spectator in their scene and make a conscious effort to play shows where women are involved. In a statement from the band: “We want to thrive in our scene as musicians, with a focus on our musicianship first, not our gender. Our goal is to normalize the role of gender in our craft and have an avenue to express our intelligence and our love of music. We acknowledge that movements of the past created by or affecting women in the art and music worlds are hugely influential, but there is potential for the original sentiments to lose potency if the meaning is misinterpreted or not redesigned for a modern context. Even the riot grrl movement is kind of antiquated. You never really hear people talk about that 'new riot grrl' band. We owe a great deal to that lineage but it's time for something new. We want to be portrayed as the responsible, thoughtful people that we are.” Press Quotes: l "Grass Widow's acute guitar riffs, wound around three-way harmonized vocals… notably influenced by female '80s Post-Punk legends like Kleenex, the Raincoats… shares a vibe of sonic abandonment with these foundational acts, which were similarly very affected by punk's rawness. The trio mixes up traditional song structures (choruses and verses appearing only once, or blending together as one), turning the most discordant vocal bits and raucous drum rolls into sing-alongs. Grass Widow write songs in the egalitarian way, each contributing equally to melody, structure, and lyrical content. Their live sets radiate this cohesiveness; there are no stars or leads in the band, each of the women evenly singing and playing at once. SF WEEKLY (Dec, 2008)

BARBNATIONAL reLeAse dATe: Cd: 08.24.2010The mutant love child of southern hemisphere it-kids Liam Finn, Lawrence Arabia, Eliza-Jane Barnes, Connan Mockasin and Seamus Ebbs, BARB is what happens when five passionately creative friends lock themselves in a world-class studio for a month with no plans and plenty of wine. On a break from their successful primary solo careers, the band had no expectations other than simply, making music. “We just booked the studio for a month, which is quite daunting in a way. It was just a complete risk and an unknown. We

didn't have any songs or anything written,” says Finn of the sessions. Musically, one can hear Liam’s avant-garde leanings as well as Arabia’s (James Milne) moody melodicism taking center stage, underpinned by a collective obsession with their own irreverent version of American soul music. Finn chuckles, “I'm not sure what's happening to us - we're all white but we're all trying to be black and make funky soul music.”

TERRAPIN POND — HELLO ALL STATIONS

There is a quiver on the mirror’s edge. Silver fish scatter below the

surface. A new sound rings from Kentucky: a fuzzed-out, spaced-out,

finger-picking noise like “Interstellar Overdrive” reborn in

Appalachia.

Neo-psychedelic mastermind / producer Craig Morris (Thee American

Revolution / Ideal Free Distribution / Apples in Stereo) presents an

innovative fusion of garage-rock and Appalachian folk with his band

Terrapin Pond, incorporating friends, family and regional Bluegrass

musicians in a swirling folk-psych landscape.

Their debut album, Hello All Stations on Garden Gate Records, plays

like an unheard mountain songbook discovered by latter-day indie

rockers—full of the classic hooks we might anticipate from Morris and

company, but this time growing in a darker, mossier forest.

Fuzz guitar, banjo, mandolin and Mellotron ebb and surge, buoyed by

lush harmonies and a heavy rhythm section, as if Dungen collided with

the Fleet Foxes. Described by Morris as “modern rural psychedelic

music,” Terrapin Pond is certain to appeal to fans of Americana and of

new psychedelia.

THE CAPSTAN SHAFTS are a one-man-band from Lyndonville, Vermont (now based out of West Virginia) masterminded by DEAN WELLS. Wells initially – and enigmatically – released over 20 home-recorded CD-Rs, never played live, didn’t publicize even a photograph of himself and became known for his signature 1-to-3 minute pop songs. In 2007 he signed to Rainbow Quartz and has since released two excellently-received albums, Environ Maiden and Fixation Protocols.

With this new release, Revelation Skirts, Wells’ homespun aesthetic has grown from lo-fi to mid-fi. Working closely with sometimes-drummer/writer/producer Matt LeMay, together they lay down basic tracks using a formidable assortment of modern and vintage gear at Marc Alan Goodman’s Strange Weather Studio in Brooklyn, New York. What emerged was a collection of sly, charming pop songs rendered in big-screen Technicolor – smart, catchy and unforgettable as ever – only now, they sound just as big on record as they do when you inevitably replay them in your head.

While completing Revelation Skirts, Wells assembled a stable backing band near his current residence in West Virginia. No longer (just) a one-man bedroom recording project, The Capstan Shafts are now a full-on rock ‘n’ roll band.

Knoxville is a live performance collaboration between Chris-tian Fennesz, David Daniell and Tony Buck, three absolute heavyweights in the experimental music scene

CD version comes in a mini-LP style gatefold package

LP version comes in a full color high gloss jacket limited to 1,000 copies with a coupon for DRM-free MP3s

Fennesz is an absolute luminary of experimental music hav-ing recorded for Mego, Touch, Ash International, and Table of the Elements and having played with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sparklehorse and Mike Patton

Daniell currently records for Thrill Jockey (having released the album Sycamore with Tortoise’s Douglas McCombs last year). He has played with Loren Conners, Rhys Chatham and Thurston Moore to name a few

Buck is best known for his group The Necks and also has played with John Zorn, Tom Cora, Peter Brotzmann and The Ex

“like Eno, Fennesz has a rare quality in an increasingly commonplace genre. It’s that of piercing exactness, of get-ting beyond the mere mechanics and loops of the electronic process.” - WIRE

“With his slow-moving, understated music, David Daniell makes a fine spokesman for the notion that anything worth doing is worth doing for a long, long time...he develops his material patiently, the better to let you observe the sounds from every angle.” - Chicago Reader

Christian Fennesz, David Daniell and Tony Buck (The Necks) are three of the most recognized and respected players in experimental music from around the globe. In 2009 the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN brought the three together and encouraged them to collaborate at the festival. The aptly named Knoxville documents the results of that first collaboration. Recorded on February 7th, 2009, Fennesz (guitar and electronics), Daniell (guitar) and Buck (drums) channel their collective energies into a darkly atmospheric piece of music that ebbs and flows with remarkable cohesion.

Minimalist drum passages scatter over the top of textured layers of guitar and subsumed melodic sequences, eventually giving way to warm beds of evolving, tactile drones. Sonic rain showers roll into full-blown thunderstorms of effected guitar and pounding drums only to yield a field of shattered electronic and percussive debris. The three retain a remarkable sense of unity for never having played together (aside from a brief soundcheck) while allowing plenty of room for each to express his individual personality.

Austrian Christian Fennesz is known for creating beautiful guitar compositions that land somewhere between concrete music, classical and ambient sounds. He has recorded and performed with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Keith Rowe, David Sylvian, Sparklehorse, Mike Patton and many others. Fennesz has also worked for nearly a decade alongside Peter Rehberg and Jim O’Rourke in the improvisational trio Fenn O’Berg.

David Daniell recently released his Thrill Jockey debut, Sycamore (Thrill-216, 2009), with fellow Chicagoan Douglas McCombs of Tortoise. Daniell has collaborated with many notable musicians, including Loren Connors, Rhys Chatham, Tim Barnes, Jeph Jerman, Thurston Moore, Greg Davis, and Jonathan Kane, and has released albums under his own name and with his band San Agustin on labels such as Table of the Elements, Family Vineyard, and Antiopic.

Tony Buck is regarded as one of Australia’s most creative and adventurous exports, with vast experience across the globe. He is best known as the drummer for the award-winning trio The Necks, founded in a confluence of avant-garde, minimalist, jazz and ambient approaches and with fifteen albums over their 20-year history. Buck is also a veteran of the jazz scene in Australia, often touring with visiting international artists such as Vincent Herring, Branford Marsalis and Ernie Watts. Buck has played, toured or recorded with Otomo Yoshihide, John Zorn, Tom Cora, Haino, The Ex, Peter Brotzmann, Han Bennink, and Wayne Horvitz.

More performances from this trio are rumored to be on the horizon...

The Metallic Year is the debut album from the new duo of Alexander Tucker and Daniel Beban

London based Alexander Tucker has released four al-bums for ATP/Recordings, played in a duo with Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O))), Khanate), and also performed with Jackie-O Motherfucker, Little Wet Horse, Mothlite and Duke Garwood

New Zealand based Daniel Beban is a well recognized sound artist and performer playing with Little Wet Horse, Orchestra of Spheres and Dr Quirkey’s Goodtimes Em-porium Band. He also runs a night of experimental mu-sic in Wellington

Tucker is also an accomplished artist, having created art-work for the group Wolfmangler, contributing drawings to the Sturgeon White Moss comic and creating artwork for his own albums (including The Metallic Year)

Much of The Metallic Year was recorded in the BBC’s Bush House

The Metallic Year is released on LP only in an edition of 1,000 copies housed in full-color jackets with double-sided insert and MP3 download coupon

“Tucker sounds like he’s following a tradition that has long been neglected, focusing not on ageless songs and ideas but on ageless feelings captured through his dron-ing miasma of acoustic guitar and mandolin.” -Brainwashed

Imbogodom are the UK’s Alexander Tucker and New Zealand’s Daniel Beban. The Metallic Year is their Thrill Jockey debut and first release under the Imbogodom moniker. Mutual friends in sound exploration, this Trans-Atlantic duo create other-worldly transmissions where improvisation gives way to mutated song forms and intricate soundscapes.

Imbogodom began life inside the depths of BBC’s Bush House, where Beban worked nights as a world service radio engineer. Taking advantage of the empty studios, Tucker and Beban dusted off the disused reel to reel tape machines and put them to work. Splicing together tape loops, the duo dove into the fine and nearly lost art of tape editing. While this technique is challenging, the process often yields great rewards. Using an array of instruments, objects, dictaphones, and voices, the duo switch between one operating the tapes and mixing desk and the other being the player. Through this process of roll exchange, the duo were able to remove the divide between player and manipulator to create a pure sonic interaction and unique meeting of minds.

The Metallic Year is a collection of eerie tracks where sound collage and unraveling songs present a haunted world of spooling atmospheres, warped instrumentation, and disembodied voices. The nocturnal creations were inspired by the tape experiments of BBC’s Radiophonics Workshop, Terry Riley, Steve Riech, and their love of New Zealand musician Alastair Galbraith. Imbogodom continue in the tradition of these sonic pioneers to bring new sounds from old sources.

Daniel Beban is a musician and sound artist living in Wellington, New Zealand. Stretching himself across many bands and musical projects, Beban plays with Dr Quirkey’s Goodtimes Emporium Band, Little Wet Horse, Orchestra of Spheres, and his solo project Sign of the Hag. He also runs a night of experimental music at The Frederick Street Sound and Light Exploration Society in Wellington.

Alexander Tucker is a London based musician and artist. Recording under his own name, Tucker has released four albums of experimental song writing, sound collage, doom riffage, and orchestral composition. He continues to release records on the ATP/Recordings label.

Coil Sea is a brand new project led by Dave Heu-mann (Arbouretum and Human Bell) and also fea-turing Matthew Pierce (Arbouretum)

Coil Sea is released on LP-only in an edition of 1,000 copies housed in full-color jackets with insert and DRM-free MP3 download coupon

LP jacket artwork by Archer Prewitt (The Sea and Cake, The Coctails)

Much of the album was recorded by Rob Girardi (Beach House, Celebration, Double Dagger) at Lord Baltimore Recording

“As singer, songwriter and guitarist, Heumann is pretty intense...Song Of The Pearl is a hefty experi-ence. Built around pastoral folk motifs, it’s prone to sudden ruptures of thunderous skronk-rock, led by the voyaging riffs of Heumann” - Uncut

Coil Sea is a collaborative and mostly improvised recording project featuring David Heumann (Arbouretum, Human Bell), Matthew Pierce (Arbouretum) and Michael Lowry (both of Lake Trout and Big in Japan) and Walker David Teret (ex-Arbouretum, Anomoanon).

The project began when Lowry and Pierce invited Heumann to sit in with their long-running instrumental project Big in Japan for one performance of a month-long residency at Baltimore’s Windup Space. Heumann and Arbouretum had recently finished a European tour, and the show with Big in Japan enlivened his idea to record improvised performances with a loose group of familiar but unaffiliated musicians.

Heumann’s goal was to record with few set ideas and little editorial input, allowing the music to develop naturally as the group coalesced. Heumann’s performance with Big in Japan had also included percussionist Michael Kuhl (Red Headed Temper, Jenny Boyle and the Drivers), so Heumann invited Kuhl, childhood friend Jimmy Wallace (guitar), and his former Arbouretum and Anomoanon bandmate Walker Teret (bass) to join the session.

The first session was recorded by Chris and Mickey Freeland on a Saturday in September. Only one song (“Abyssinia”) had a pre-written melody; the rest of the performances were composed and improvised on the spot, with the only verbal directions being references to tempo and key. A portion of the recording from that session was edited and mixed with Freeland, and later with Rob Girardi at Lord Baltimore Recordings, for the album tracks “Abyssinia,” “Revert to Dirt” and “Waking the Naga.” Much care was taken to preserve the spirit and feel of the original takes, even as effects were added to the original tracks, instruments were brought in and out of the mix and performances were cut and spliced.

A second session was arranged, this time recording at Lord Baltimore, based around a melody Heumann had come up with in a Lydian mode, which appears on the record as “Dolphins in the Coil Sea”. The track was envisioned as an homage to jazz/noise legend Sonny Sharrock, and is unique to the album in that it’s almost untouched from the original recording.

ILL BLU—Bellion / Dragon Pop FORMAT - 12” LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300303288 CATALOG # - HDB036 LIST PRICE - $11.99 This is the debut release on Hyperdub for north London‟s Ill Blu, one of Funky‟s most celebrated and promising production duos, who since forming in 2008 have had a string of underground hits as well as recently putting remixes for the likes of Cheryl Cole and Hot Chip under their belts. On side A, „Bellion‟ is a great example of Funky at it‟s most effec-tively simple and maxi-malist. It‟s memorable, clear, bell-like melody is reflected in the sub bass line and heavy mid range chords while the percussive drums add to the intensity making the whole track inescapably infectious. In contrast, B-side „Dragon Pop‟s relentless lattice of congas, snares, deep bass drum and percussion seems minimal, but at the same time there is no space for melody within the tracks construction, it‟s just that intense.

Twist & Shout began life in 1988 when schoolteachers Paul and Jill Epstein purchased the then Underground Records at a

tax auction. In the early days Twist was a small, funky neighborhood store catering to fans of specialty genres—avant jazz,

reggae, metal, jam bands. It was the store you could count on for imports, used, singles and a knowledgeable staff who

would let you listen to anything they had. Everything got bigger and better in a hurry. They started carrying all genres

and expanded into all kinds of related merchandise—videos, clothes, toys, books, etc. They stuck to their guns keeping

their balance leaning heavily towards independent and deep catalog. They also continued to let their customers listen to

anything. Twist & Shout now employ 52 people over two stores and in cyberspace.

When did your store open its doors? 1988.

What made you decide to venture into music retail? The opportunity arose and I already spent all my time energy and money pursuing it as a fan.

How does your store stand out from the rest? Better selection, better ambiance better service.

What do you do differently than other to help publicize/promote/market a release? Get behind it with a blog, web presence and instore play.

What types of selections do you tend to cater towards? Deep everything - especially rock, jazz, dance, metal-vinyl-esoterica and indie releases are our forte. Lots of 60's psych, ltd edition vinyl-collectible stuff. High brow and foreign movies. Our used selection is also pretty legendary.

Describe your average customer…Male, 30-60.

What are your favorite Redeye releases (Top 5)? Dave Alvin - Ashgrove, Robyn Hitchcock - I Wanna Go Backwards, Apples in Stereo - #1 Hits Explosion, Brian Jonestown Massacre - Who Killed Sgt. Pepper, Devotchka - Una Volta.

Any tidbits, stories or funny side notes? Redeye is the best vendor because I smoked pot with the owner during an official NARM event years ago, and despite him not being able to handle the goods he was incredibly fun to hang with.
