    FUNDAMENTAL MASTERPIECES

Building in and with the subsoil has always been a special engineering challenge.

In this field, a lot of experience is called for, as well as the permanent readinessto get to the bottom of things on site every time afresh. Our top priority is to

always find the best solution in terms of economical efficiency as well as technology

while we are simultaneously striving to avoid risks and to work safely.

The highly qualified geotechnical experts among the 300 engineers of Ed. Zblin AGs

central engineering division Zentrale Technik form well-attuned teams with our

site supervisors, who are experienced in building in Germany and abroad. In this

manner, we manage to combine expert knowledge with practical experience in the

offices and on site. Structural analyses and working drawings as well as construction

and time schedules, work techniques and use of staff and equipment are all worked

out, coordinated and optimised by one team.

110 years of international ground engineering experience have so provided us with

a high standard of competence to solve even the most demanding construction

problems. And thats what our clients benefit from every day, in Germany and

    abroad.

    DIAPHRAGM WALLS

    EXPERIENCE COUNTS

Diaphragm walls of all kinds, sometimes in combination, are used as massive

supporting systems for construction pits, as load-bearing foundation elements,or for ground water sealing purposes.

They can be built very close to existing structures and are known for their good

water impermeability even if the ground water table is high.

Every year, we build some ten thousand square meters using this technique. Our

typical clients for diaphragm walls are investors in urban building projects with

difficult subsoil conditions, landfill operators, yet also public authorities in charge

    of large infrastructural projects.

    PILES

    A SOLID BASIS

Zblin Spezialtiefbau has the equipment for all installation methods for bored piles,

from those of largest diameter to micro piles. Appropriate subsoil conditionsprovided, our driven piles might also be a quick and, thus, economical alternative

for foundations that have to carry even the heaviest loads.

We also have the special means and experience to build additional foundations for

existing structures and in situations of constricted height.

By placing piles side by side, large-diameter bored piles can form entire pile walls

that serve as almost impermeable and rigid retaining walls for construction pits.

Our testing facilities allow us to examine test piles prior to actual construction in

order to economically optimise the foundation design for our clients.

    RETAINING WALLS

    ROOM FOR NEW THINGS

Where the requirements as to water tightness and deformation behaviour are

not so stringent we recommend other retaining systems that we offer aside fromdiaphragm and pile walls:

Sheet pile walls consist of individual steel sheet piles, connected by clutches,

which can be built faster than anything else, provided that the subsoil allows for

easy driving. If the piles can be retrieved after construction, this method is also

highly cost-efficient. When reinforced with pipes and beams, sheet pile walls are

able to bear extreme loads. They are used predominantly in hydraulic engineering.

The use of soldier pile walls is a traditional retaining method. The modern approach,

to keep vibration to a minimum, is to install the steel beams in pre-bored holes.

As excavation proceeds, the spaces between the beams are filled with squared

    timber or reinforced shotcrete.

Our preferred method of securing steeply sloping areas is by way of soil nailing

using steel bars installed into pre-drilled holes and grouted into place. In this way

the ground is being reinforced and turned into a monolithic block. The exposed

slope surface is sealed step by step with a reinforced shotcrete facing.

Element walls are another means to retain steep slopes. Such walls consist of

steel tendons, which are tied back in the deeper subsoil and prestressed against

the individual concrete elements on the slope surface.

    KNOW-HOW THAT IS IN DEMAND

Soils can be improved by injecting various environmentally compatible grouts.

This is done for various purposes:

For the enhancement of soil stability, e.g. on sliding slopes or to underpin

adjacent structures, for settlement compensation, i.e. the compensation of

harmful settlements by way of introducing additional volume into the subsoil,

or for the improvement of water tightness, e.g. to create horizontal base seals

    for construction pits.

Comprehensive and time-consuming water extraction permit procedures,

together with high extraction and discharge fees, can be avoided, in particular

in the latter case, if the inflow of groundwater into the construction pit is kept to

    a minimum.

As a leading player in this field, we are also active in introducing standards for

special grouting methods within the framework of the European standardisation

    activities.

To control compensation grouting, Zblin developed the SOFIA software. The

control system of the software is fed by information from the water level gauge

system and data from the completed grout injections. These pieces of information

are automatically processed by the software, are visually displayed and are

archived in a database. The structure of this database enables site supervisors

to produce standardised and auditable reports of grouting work (in the form of

tables or charts) for the client.

    GROUND ANCHORS

    FIRMLY ANCHORED

Ground anchors are prestressed tendons made of steel strands or bar steel which

are installed in and grouted into bore holes. They serve as temporary or permanentmeans to accommodate high tensile loads in the ground and are used for

construction pit retaining walls, for securing structures against uplift through ground

water, for slope retention and for reaction force application in pile test loading.

The strengthening of dams with high-capacity anchors is also part of our service

range as are high-pressure-grouted bar anchors.

    UNCONVENTIONAL SOLUTIONS

In certain cases, special construction methods are used, for which we are well

prepared in terms of technical equipment:

Soil freezing uses a coolant circulating in pipe systems installed in the subsoil.

This coolant makes the water in the subsoil freeze. The strengthening and sealing

effect of the ice is used, for instance, for building cross passages in underwater

tunnelling or for cleanup works, in order to bind volatile hazardous substances

    in the ground.

Controlled horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is used to create long-distance

connections without harming landscape surfaces in-between. Hence, this method

is used to underpass structures, rivers or special facilities, like nature reserves,

airports or railway tracks. HDD helps to minimise intrusions, which would

otherwise be unavoidable, together with the costs thereby incurred.

In times of rising energy prices and ever scarcer resources, the use of geothermal

energy is strongly gaining in importance. The enormous potential of this type of

energy for heating, cooling and energy storage is continuously being increased

through R&D. With our deep boring equipment we are in a position to offerexploration drillings down to reservoirs in depths of up to 1,000 m and production

    drillings down to 1,500 m.

Another type of regenerative energy production is offshore wind power plants.

We have been developing foundation elements for these in a specialised business

unit and have already installed them successfully.

In the preservation of historical monuments, translocation describes the documented

dismantling and later as true to original as possible re-assembly of a historical

building in another location. This is done especially in cases where cultural

monuments stand in the way of construction projects. We have developed a much

gentler alternative: We just move the complete, bared object on special sliding waysto its new location. We even offer complicated underwater tunnel translocations in

one comprehensive approach. This helps to massively reduce traffic obstructions

    in inland navigation.

    LARGE-SCALE PROJECTS

    HIGH-QUALITY

    COMPREHENSIVE SERVICE

Clients who are realising large-scale infrastructure projects with their numerous

interfaces between the individual contractors face enormous challenges in terms

of coordination efforts and risks. For them it is much more cost-efficient and

much easier to award the contract for all works to one single group of affiliated

    companies.

In particular when it comes to large construction pits, the turnkey construction

of the pit, complete with a base slab anchored down against uplift provides an

attractive alternative for the client with regard to the time won for the award of the

    further structural works.

However, this requires a partner with all the necessary financial, technical andhuman resources who is in the position to carry out such large-scale projects

within the scheduled time and in the desired quality.

Here it comes in handy to have a partner which belongs to one of Europes leading

construction groups, and which is a one-stop-provider for the entire project all

    over the world.
