In August 2002 we discussed the issues that had arisen in considering~. ,' ether or not to stand down Mr Case. I enclose a copy of my letter to you of 6 August 2002 setting ouY the reasoning we pursued at that time.
Recently, a claim was made by[888 lin respect of the activities of a teacher, Mr Knight at St. Paul's. In the course of the police 1nvestigat1on of that matter, Mr Case drafted a statement in which he referred to a conversation he had with the Headmaster at BBC, the former employer of Knight, before Knight was appointed to St. Paul 's.
I have today received a draft statement from the former headmaster of BBC, Mr Thomson, who says that he had sacked Knight, given a negative reference to Mr Case and was "surprised" when he heard that St. Paul's had appointed Knight.
The possibility is that, if the statement of the BBC headmaster is accepted, Mr Case made a serious error of judgement in appointing Knight. The consequences of that error are only now becoming manifest.
