Diane offers the first of two lunchtime
presentations at the Mare Island Preserve visitors
center. Diane has been studying ospreys and
visiting osprey nest sites for 7 years. She will
present a birder's overview of osprey life from
Maine to California and beyond. Diane attended the
Raptor Rapture seminars at Hog Island Audubon
Camp in Maine in 2014 and 2015 and in August will
start her 4th season as a hawk watcher at Golden
Gate Raptor Observatory in Marin County.

Preserve to view osprey nests, osprey in the sky and likely perched on lightning rods and other structures
in the former Naval Ammunition Depot. She’ll help you spot great blue herons on their nests or nearby and
some of the 12 documented great egret nests with young in various stages. Look for hawks, white tailed
kites, songbirds and woodpeckers, too. Bring binoculars, scopes, cameras (will you share or bring an extra
pair?) and hike gear and water for the one mile walk. Meet at the Mare Island Preserve visitor center.

cases of nest removal and disturbance. Nesting
on problematic structures is easily solved by the
installation of alternative artificial nest
structures. This has been accomplished for about
ten nesting pairs so far. Continued education of
wildlife agencies, biology consulting firms and
property managers about this approach will allow
this iconic species to continue to expand and
thrive in San Francisco Bay.

Marcia Grefsrud is a very knowledgeable birder and tremendous naturalist. She is joined by Michelle Eliker, a regular Flyway Festival and Mare Island Preserve birding
guide who is passionate about sharing what she knows about birds with you. You’ll be on the lookout for osprey of course, but great blue herons and great egrets on and off nests, hawks, kites, songbirds and woodpeckers, too.
