The first RR in Canadastretched from St. John’s (St.Jean) on the Richelieu R toLaprairie on the St. LawrenceR.
It was a portage between theMolson steamboat lines (1836).
Albion Mines RR, the first inthe Maritimes (1839).
The Depression of1837-39 & Rebellionsof 1837-38 delayed RRconstruction.RR Guarantee Act:
RRs more than 75miles (120 kms) wereeligible for a gov’t.guarantee of moneywhen ½ of the line wascompleted (1849).Created the RR boomof the 1850s.

Prince of Wales, son ofQueen Victoria, at theVictoria Bridge in Mtl.
He opens the GTRSarnia to Portland,Maine (ice-free port).This is the longest RRin the world (1860).
The CanadianConstitutionof 1867 required the
Inter-Colonial RR toconnect the St.Lawrence R to
the Maritimes.
