A night of food, wine and fellowship was had at the Combined Service Clubs Dinner at the Campbelltown

Council Hall on Tuesday night. I had the honour of sitting at the head table with the presidents of all the

service clubs including other Rotary Clubs, Lions, Kiwanis and Inner Wheel. I also had the pleasure of being

seated next to Mayor Simon Brewer’s lovely wife Nina.

Being new at the game I was caught on the hop when asked to speak first on the Club and its activities. It

didn’t help with my voice still a bit croaky but I gave it a crack. I do feel a fine coming my way as I did miss

plugging our Sunrise Market (but at least Mayor Simon did). I was honoured though to receive the tie from

the Council and will wear it with pride to the dinner next year.

We were treated to a scrumptious 3 course meal, superb wines, topped off with a brilliant raconteur in

Michael Keelan. Michael entertained us with anecdotes from his long career in both radio and television

and his love for horticulture. In addition Now in Stereo, a young and vibrant quartet gave us a blast from the

past with their barbershop style tunes. They challenged us with that age old question, ‘Who put the bomp in

the bomp shu bomp shu bomp?’ The 4 lads were fantastic and I think our market committee may have to get

on to these guys to perform at our Market in the coming months. You can find Now in Stereo on Facebook.

I do hope that all who attended from our club had as good a time as I did as we had a healthy turn out for a

club our size. The main Sunrise table fared well in the raffle with Chris Gascoine having the first ticket to be

drawn (NOT WAYNE – he did not win a thing??). Mark T was a little peed off as he had loaned Chris $5 to

purchase his raffle tickets until he could break a twenty.

It will be back to normality next week with our meeting returning to normal. Our guest speaker Lynton

Nicholas will be talking to us about RYWELL which is something I am looking forward to. A small reminder

that our meeting Tuesday week will be a “Bring a Guest to Breakfast” meeting so start teeing up a friend or

colleague to bring along. Please let Gary know for catering purposes. His email is

Yet another stellar performance saw RC Morialta’s Kym Davis top the table this week – and

therefore be the furthest off the prize money. At the other end of the table was Kevin & Shirley

Roberts who excelled in tipping losers – and as a result win the moolah.

Round 22 was the last weekly prize. So on to Round 23. This is the final week you need to submit

tips. Final placings and 4 ‘major’ prizes will be settled at the end of this round.

The big money goes to 1st, 2nd, 16th and the last placed tippers.

Currently - top of the leader board is “The Rotary Foundation” – an honorary entrant each year

who participates (like ‘the house’ at a casino) in the hope of picking up the occasional lucky prize.

However, this year, the TRF has followed a formula each week and now finds itself 2 points clear

with 1 round to go. It’s not over yet, but it says heaps about the benefits of simple tipping

strategies.

2nd place looks like a race between John Kennedy, Ken Quarrell, Kym Davis & Sue Hector.

But the hot spot is in the middle of the pack – with Trevor, Rita, Adel, Matt, Graham, Greg, Alan &

Pauline only 1 or 2 tips off the spot.

So GOOD TIPPING (but not too good - depending on your target) and stay tuned for the final report

next week.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards: RYLA

Right now applications are open for the 2012 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards - a scholarship

program run by the Rotary Club to empower young people with the skills and ambition to lead. It's

a week-long residential seminar, featuring extraordinary speakers from across Australia on topics

around leadership, public speaking, and other skills intended to equip awardees to become great

leaders. Best of all, it's all expenses paid thanks to Rotary, awarded to you on the strength of your

application.

Applications close very soon, and, sadly, we haven't had a great deal of interest this year. In fact,

there is a very real likelihood that RYLA 2012 may be called off due to lack of interest. The good

news is that you can help.

To attend RYLA, you must be aged 18 to 25, and you would like to:

• develop leadership skills

• improve your public speaker and

• become a valuable team member

We provide the digs, the grub and the speakers, but the one thing we need from you is the free

publicity. So please help us spread the word, and make sure the RYLA experience reaches those

who will benefit!

The deadline for applications has been extended to Monday September 3rd, so there's still time,

but please encourage potential awardees to get their applications in as soon as possible! So please

pass this information on to everyone you know who might be interested, and tell them to Apply

Editor’s Comment: Keith Abraham one of Australia’s leading motivational speakers was a young,

aimless Weed Controller working for a NSW North Shore Council, who’s live revolved around lunch

and tea breaks. One week of RYLA turned his life around.
