A Proud Heritage of Innovation,History and Efficiency
The name SS White is syn-onymous with dentistry in
the United States. The glori-ous history of SS White Bursbegan in 1844 when SamuelStockton White opened uphis business in Philadelphia,
PA.
To aid in distribution ofproducts and stimulatecommunication withdentist customers, retail
stores were opened: New York (1846), Boston(1850), Brooklyn (1852), and Chicago (1858).Finding this method inadequate to keep up withdemand, the firm then established a system ofselling to dealers which could reach dentists atconsiderable distances and provide themwith services they needed.
The growth of SS White is directlyrelated to Dr. White’s determina-tion to improve his chosen pro-fession. He encouraged doctors tocommunicate ideas freely with him, resulting in many innovations anda business philosophy that is thefoundation of the company, even today.
Over 160 Years of Dedication
SS White hasalways strived to
bring high qualitydental products tomarket, to enablepractitioners to workmore accurately andprecisely, and to maxi-mize comfort and
quality for each and every patient who enters adental office. The continued enthusiasm of SSWhite exists in each and every employee stilltoday as we continually work toward creating
innovative products which will advance den-tistry.

Efficiency
SS White has worked with dentists and dentalresearchers to develop products that help
deliver greater efficiency to the dental practice.
Great White™ Gold Series Operative Carbides:The unique blade geometry provides one of thefastest cutting and efficient operative burs avail-able. Useful for easy crown removal, rapid
endodontic access and quick and smooth
amalgam removal.The burs are
designed for rapidpreparation and tooth reduction
with a minimum of chatter.
Great White™ Ultra Crown and BridgePreparation Burs:A more efficient burfor the bulk reductiontask in crown prepthan traditional dia-monds. The scientifi-cally designed bladestructure allows debris
to be quickly washed away. This eliminates the“drag” experienced with clogged diamondinstruments. In addition, excellent marginalintegrity is provided via the cutting blade on thehead tip.
Conservation
SS White has worked with dentists and dentalresearchers to develop products that help
provide conservative solutions to the dentalpractice.
Fissurotomy®: SS White worked with TempleUniversity to develop apatented instrument to sci-entifically examine andexcavate suspect pits andfissures for hidden caries. That bur is called theFissurotomy® bur. This con-servatively designed burallows the explorer to accurately diagnose thepresence of decay and also create an ideal cavityform for restoration. The tip head is smaller thana 1/4 round bur shape. The head length isdesigned to get you just to the DEJ in mostcases; thus reducing the need for anesthesia.
Philosophy Remains the Same...
Today, SS White continueson the tradition of the
founder of identifying anddeveloping ideas that willimprove the quality of den-tal care or make dentistsmore efficient. We believethat innovation and the cre-ation of unique and differ-entiated products are thecornerstone of the companyand make SS White one ofthe most well recognizedand trusted name in den-tistry today. We are commit-ted to changing dentistryfor the better... again.

The combination of a round headand straight fissure avoids thenecessity of changing burs for thetwo operations of enamel pene-tration and side cutting. Ideallysuited to the preparation of mini-mal occlusal fissure (Class I) cavi-ties in premolars and molars. Anadditional feature is the develop-ment of rounded internal lineangles which increases the disper-sion of mastication forces.

The Fissurotomy® Bur...The Fissurotomy® Bur...A conservative solution to suspect fissures
SOLUTION: The Fissurotomy® BurThe scientifically developed instrument for the conservativediagnosis and treatment of hidden caries.
No Stick No X-RayEvidence Decay Present
Problem: Hidden CariesIncreased fluoride use has made it difficult to detect fis-sure caries using explorers and x-rays. A large percent-age of suspect fissures have decay present.
RESULT: Conservative PrepThe Fissurotomy® Bur allows for exploration of fissures. It isvirtually pain-free (to the DEJ) and creates an ideal cavityform. You can explore and restore in just 3–5 minutes.
Fissure is clean & contouredFissurotomy Bur creating access
◆ Tip of bur is smaller and more conservative than 1/4 round.
◆ Fine carbide tip will not strip quickly like thin diamonds.
◆ Virtually pain free to the DEJ.... in most cases no anesthesia is needed.
◆ Ideal cavity prep form.
◆ Cleaner, faster, more controlled and less costly than air abrasion.
◆ May perform multiple preps in the same amount of time it takes to do a single prep with anesthesia. Results in more efficiency for your practice.
Studies have shown that over 90% of pits and fissureswith subsurface staining and white decalcificationhave decay present.
Fissurotomy® Burshave a 100% rating
from an independentnon-profit dentalproducts testing
laboratory.

TWELVE BLADEDTwelve bladed finishing burs provide asmooth finish on composite, amalgam, enamel, dentin, ortho debonding andother dental materials. Designated by the7000 series #. Ideal for controlled contour-ing and finishing.
THIRTY BLADEDThirty bladed burs will eliminate mostsurface striations and are recommendedto be used prior to abrasive polishinginstruments. These instruments aredesigned to reduce the “shiny dull” phe-nomenon and save additional polishingtime. Designated by the 9000 series #.Ideal for final surface refinement andsatin polishing.
A smoother, more aesthetically pleasing surface can beachieved with carbide finishing burs as opposed to diamonds formost restorative materials. Carbide burs should be used to trimand finish macrofilled composites and hybrid composites.
Grinding & polishing diamonds should be used to trim and finishmicrofilled composites. Coarse grinding tools leave behind stria-tions; fine and extra fine diamonds are suitable for finishing.
Finishing BursFinishing Burs...are specifically designed for the shapingand finishing of all dental materials.
12 & 30 Bladed
SS White’s unique spiraldesign allows blades tocontinually remain in con-tact with the cutting sur-face, resulting in a smootherfinish with less vibration.

Technique For High Speed Metal Finishing
Equipment Requirements:• High-Speed friction grip handpiece• Protective eyewear and apron
Safety First:1. Perform metal finishing in front of a local exhaust station.2.Wear a full-face shield, or a face mask and safety eyeglasses.3.Wear a nylon or plastic bib or apron.4.Metal particles can irritate. Do not touch or rub eyes or facewhen metal finishing.
5.Wash hands immediately after metal finishing.6. If skin is sensitive, wear fitted latex gloves during metal finishing.
NOTE: For best results use a pencil grip grasp and lightpressure. Place the bur on the metal surface and movethe rotating bur toward you.
STEP 1: Gross ReductionBegin gross reduction of the coping (metal substrate) atthe sprue area with the EL1. Continue gross reductionof excessive bulk, contouring the metal into the generalshape and thickness desired.
STEP 2: Gross ReductionFurther gross reduction may also be accomplished byusing the EL2 to finish around metal collars, pontic con-nectors, and chamfer margins where a designated con-
tour is required.
STEP 3:Textured FinishNow that the coping (metal substrate) has been con-toured to the desired thickness, use the EL3 to place atextured finish on all porcelain bearing surfaces inpreparation for porcelain application.
STEP 4:Textured FinishUse the EL4 to finish all porcelain-bearing surfaces atchamfered margins, under pontics, and at embrasuresto attain a textured finish in preparation for porcelainapplication.

CLEANING
STEP 1. Wear gloves when han-dling contaminated instruments.Pre-soak carbide burs in a contain-er of soapy water to loosen debris.Ultrasonic systems may also beused to loosen debris in burs, however burs should be separatedfrom each other in a bur blockduring immersion to prevent dam-age.
STEP 2. Brush away remainingdebris using a SS White stainlesssteel wire brush (order no. 26040)and rinse burs under runningwater.
STEP 3. After rinsing, dry burs thor-oughly by placing them onabsorbent towels. Pat dry all sur-faces.
STERILIZATION
Proper sterilization of carbide bursis extremely important because iteliminates the threat of crossinfection of patients and staff withcommunicable diseases.
1. Dry Heat Sterilizers 170°C(340°F) for 1 hour. These methods, when used according to manufac-turers instructions, will not corrodeor dull carbide burs.
2. Steam autoclaves 121°C (250°F)for 20 minutes @ 15 p.s.i. Thesesystems will effectively sterilizecarbide burs; however, potentialfor corrosion is present.
AVOID cold sterilizing solutions asthey contain oxidizing agentswhich may weaken carbide burs.
AVOID worn chucks which maycause bur slippage and/or vibra-tion that can lead to breakage.
Recommendations for the care of tungsten carbide burs
CONSIDER SINGLE USE FORMAIN OPERATORY CARBIDES TO INSURE:
❑ A consistent, fast cutting bur which saves valuable time
❑ Greater patient comfort
