ged wi th a pa thos capab le o f s t i r r ing emot ions.But i t is also capable of hiding extremely refinedstructura l ca lcu la t ions wi th in forms and vo lumest h a t p r e se n t a n e x t r a o r d i n a r y v i su a l i m p a c t .Currently, this architect/engineer from Valencia isperhaps the only architectural designer w ho can b econsidered an h eir to G aud.In fac t , he found insp i ra t ion in the work o f the g r e a t C a t a l a n m a s t e r f o r h i s S o n d i c a a i r p o r t project. The design reference is unquestionably evi-d e n t i n t h e sl o p i n g i n t e r i o r o f t h e p o r t i c o i n Barcelonas Gell Park t hat w as re-elaborated b yCalatrava based on a sinusoidal plan.

Created almost ten years ago, the Sondica airporttoday is ful ly operational and outfi tted with eightgates. It was promoted by the authorit ies in Bilbaoin o rde r to p rov ide a ma jo r a i rpo r t fo r the con- stant ly expanding metropol is. The Sondica con-struct ion is located approximate ly ten ki lometersfrom the Basque city. Init ial ly intended to sustainan a i r passenger vo lume of two mi l l ion trave lersper year, this airport w il l now be able to accom m o-date a f low of more than ten mi l l ion passengerspe r year . The p ro jec t expands on the idea o f a compact terminal, characterized by large glass sur-faces articulated over fo ur f loors.

A simpl i f ied ground p lan g ives the not ion of d is-t r ibu t i ve s imp l i f i ca t ion as one o f the ma in con- cepts. The layout calls for careful containment ofthe in t erna l pathw ays that are designed prim arily

to support the un i ty and singular i ty o f the com-prehensive space. This concept facilitates the flowof passengers and pr ovides travelers w ith t he bestpossible orientation w ithin t he space.Two great wings are spread around this functionalnucleus, each of which is capable of hosting botharrivals and d epartu res, as w ell as ho using all theadm inistrative off ices. A large parking area extendsover four f loors to guarantee adequate connection

between the a i rport and both publ ic and pr ivatetransportation.St ruc tu ra l l y , the a i rpo r t i s bu i l t on a sys tem o f reinforced concrete pi l lars, girders and arches toprovide amp le stabil i ty for t he large ribbed m etalliccovering. I ts t r iangular form helps emphasize i tsstron g visual imp act. The lateral w ings are protec-ted by a double-vaul ted covering that is in turnreinforced by a system of structural ribs and steelstanchions running up f rom concrete pi l lars.The flexibi l i ty of structures in space is basic toCalatravas assumed poetry, and functions as thepivot for a complex blend of geometry. It is also

central to dynam ics and l ightn ess in his w ork, bo thof which are fundamental to the structural experi-men ta t ion tha t l ies a t the hear t o f eng ineer ing .W hen all is said and do ne, techn olog ical experi-mentation and innovative structural solutions arenever on display at the center of attent ion. Instead,they are organic to the general composition of anarchitectural work. The theme of the covering, forexample, explains this process through a simple yetcomplex f igure that resembles a large tr iangularsail bi l lowed by the wind. He used a similar themein the covering of the Jakem w arehouse, one of the first major projects conceived and undertaken

by Calatrava at the very beginning of his professio-nal career. Calatrava is still engaged in w ork as atheorist in the fundamental debates of contempo-rary architecture. He continues to strive to resolve

problems and issues that invo lve not on ly socia l recogni t ion, but the very ident i ty o f arch i tectureand engineering, too. Essential ly, there sti l l existrelevant knots to untangle. For example, the issuew hich has created considerable contro versy w ithinthe w orld of architecture and is substantial ly sup-ported by Frank Gehrys heresies (e.g. the case ofthe new Guggenh e im M useum in B ilbao). Such issues are being fought by a sort of fraternity of

architects and purist engineers who seem unableto conquer the rigid separation between architec-ture and engineering. It is a problem that can beovercome by using experience from projects thatintegrate the artistic component in both architectu-ral w ork s and inf rastru ctur es, such as in a greatviaduct.Even Calatravas creation has generated contrastsand d ivergences, especial ly am ong tho se w orkingwi th in the f ie ld o f a rch i tec tu re . What was once considered destabilizing according to the estab-lished order in the visionary charge that characte-rizes the Auditorium in Tenerife, the City of Science

in Valencia and the expansion of the M i lw aukeeArt M useum , has now been recognized as relevantand interesting. This is precisely due to the explora-t ion of the communicative potential of architectu-re , now in tended and understood asmedium .
