Honor Roll of Donors 2014-2015The honor roll of donors acknowledges the cumulative giving of all individuals and organizations who supported the ESF College Foundation with a financial contribution during the period July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015.

Contributors are listed within their appropriate donor categories: alumni; corporations, foundations and organizations; board members; friends; faculty and staff; and parents. Donors who fall into multiple donor categories are listed multiple times. Alumni also are listed by class year.

Within each donor category, additional recognition is given to contributors who are members of the Founder’s Club (cumulative lifetime gifts of $25,000 or more) and the President’s Club (annual gifts of $1,000 or more). Donors are listed alphabetically under the heading of “contributors.”

Special recognition through the production of separate lists is also given to members of our three premier gift societies which are:

n Founder’s Club Members cumulative lifetime giving equals $25,000 or more.

n 1911 Society Sustaining Members have made an annual unrestricted gift of at least

$1,911 (the year of the College’s founding).

Gold Members have made an annual unrestricted gift of at least $5,000.

Platinum Members have made an annual unrestricted gift of at least $10,000.

n Robin Hood Oak Society Members have made a planned gift or provision for ESF in their Estate Plan.

A list of all endowments and funds named through significant contributions to the ESF College Foundation is included in this publication.

Named funds held by the Syracuse Pulp and Paper Foundation are listed in SPPF publications.

The publication of the honor roll is intended to publicly recognize and thank all donors to the ESF College Foundation. We have made every effort to ensure this list is comprehen sive and accurate. Any errors of omission or fact should be reported to the ESF College Foundation office by telephone at 3154706683 or by email to [email protected].

JULY 1, 2014 TO JUNE 30, 2015 1

Dear Friends:

In 2011, the SUNY College of Environmental

Science and Forestry celebrated its 100th

anniversary. The occasion was an opportunity

to celebrate ESF’s first century of achievements

while reflecting on the challenges ahead.

With many exciting opportunities on the

horizon for ESF’s second hundred years, the

college embarked on its largest and most comprehensive fundraising

effort – The Centennial Campaign for ESF. With a goal of raising $20

million over 5 years, The Centennial Campaign for ESF endeavored to

raise new financial resources to expand academic innovation, enhance

our facilities, and to create new scholarship opportunities for our

students.

Earlier this year it was my pleasure to announce The Centennial

Campaign for ESF reached successful completion 18 months ahead of

schedule with over $21.5 million raised; surpassing our $20 million goal!

This accomplishment is thanks to you, our generous donors. Your gifts

will provide vital assistance for ESF students as they learn the skills they

need to take the lead in improving the world in which we live.

It is a privilege every day to witness the impact of your gifts at ESF.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of ESF students and

faculty.

Sincerely,

Brenda Greenfield

Executive Director

ESF College Foundation

Stewarding the FutureAs co-owner of Cross Island Farms, an organic farm on Wellesley Island, Dani Baker has a vested interest in the environment and ecological research. “I’ve always supported organizations that preserve the environment,” she said.

Baker grew up spending summers in the Adirondack Mountains of New York state. She also tended the family garden, developing a love for the soil and the beauty of nature. When she retired from her psychologist position with the state Department of Corrections in 2007, she devoted herself full time to the farm.

In 2012, she saw an article in the local newspaper regarding renovations at ESF’s Thousand Islands Biological Station and the college’s search for financial support. The next year, she had a summer intern from ESF, landscape architecture student James Gross helped Baker develop an edible forest garden for her farm. “He was extremely helpful,” she said. “So helpful to me, that I wanted to give back.”

For Baker, giving back came in the form of a gift to support construction of the student/researcher building at TIBS. The gift was made in memory of her son Marc, who died at the age of 21. The aquatics laboratory at TIBS is named in honor of Marc in recognition of the gift. “It was a way to help support a worthy cause and get his name out so he’s remembered,” she said.

Ten Thousand Chestnut Challenge

ESF’s first crowdfunding campaign, the Ten Thousand Chestnut Challenge to benefit the College’s American chestnut tree restoration program, was a huge success. Using social media for promotion and community building, over $105,000 was raised – more than double the original $50,000 goal.

After 25 years of intense research, ESF scientists announced they are able to grow blight-resistant American chestnut trees. The chestnut blight wiped out some 4 billion trees in the early 20th century, virtually eliminating the iconic American chestnut tree from the American forest. With these funds, scientists are moving to the next phase of the restoration project: growing the first 10,000 blight-resistant American chestnut trees in the next five years.

Through crowdfunding, the college was able to reach beyond its traditional donor base. Of the nearly 600 donors, 67 percent were new donors with no previous connection to the college. Additionally, donations were received from almost every state in the United States and seven other countries, proving that the work done at ESF impacts people around the globe.

Along with providing financial support, more than 330 people joined the “Mother Tree” program to plant non-transgenic chestnuts in their local area. The hope is those mother trees will eventually breed with transgenic ones to produce a new generation of blight-resistant trees with increased genetic diversity. The transgenic trees still face a rigorous review process before they can be widely planted.

Protecting Endangered Wildilfe“The Weeden Foundation came through at a critical time to protect snow leopards in Russia,” said Dr. James Gibbs.

Gibbs, a professor of conservation biology at ESF, has collaborated in efforts to save the endangered predator in the remote and rugged Altai Republic in Siberia. With $35,000 of support from the Weeden Foundation between 2011 and 2012, researchers were able to remove snares and support local anti-poaching brigades. This was followed by the installation of high-tech devices that monitor temperature in cabins used by poachers; when poachers arrive and start a fire for warmth, the sensors send an electronic signal that alerts officials of the poachers’ presence.

As recently as four years ago, the outlook for snow leopards in Altai was “bleak,” according to Gibbs, but the anti-poaching efforts, combined with the abundance of prey and photographic evidence that the leopards are in the area, provide reason to believe the snow leopard population has increased to a much less precarious level.

Thanks to the support of the Weeden Foundation, Gibbs and his team were able to leverage grants from the U.S. Agency for International Development and NASA to support ecosystem and rangeland wildlife in Russia and Mongolia.

“The Weeden Foundation provides vital support for a very special part of the world,” said Gibbs.

Field Course Broadens ExperienceJody and Doreen Garrett are the definition of true outdoor enthusiasts. They have found a way to incorporate environmental conservation into their personal and professional lives and to foster that passion in others.

Together, the Garretts manage the 2,000-acre Lucky Star Ranch, a private preserve in Chaumont, New York. The Garretts are dedicated to learning more about the land, sharing that knowledge with others and protecting it for future generations.

The couple has developed a strong connection to ESF over the last several years. In 2011, they welcomed ESF scientists and students to the ranch to conduct a bioblitz, a biological inventory taken within a 24-hour time span. The Garretts were also the 2012 recipients of ESF’s Sol Feinstone Environmental Award which recognizes outstanding achievements in caring for the environment, encouraging volunteerism and adding to the public’s understanding of environmental issues.

In 2014, the couple made a gift to the Roosevelt Wild Life Station to help launch a new full-immersion field experience for ESF undergraduates at Lucky Star Ranch. The inaugural course, launched in May 2015, drew 14 undergraduate students from an array of majors including wildlife science, conservation biology and environ-mental biology. Dr. Jacqueline Frair, associate professor and associate director of the Roosevelt Wild Life Station, served as lead instructor.

Students learned about a range of techniques applied in wildlife conser–vation and gained field competencies they will need as they enter the conservation workforce in the years to come. Said Bradley Wincklemann, a senior conservation biology major, “There is little doubt in my mind that this was likely the most useful class I’ve taken as an undergrad at ESF.”

The Garretts

Enhancing Adirondack EducationCharles and Elsbeth (Betsy) Morgan, hikers with lifelong roots in the Adirondacks, made a significant gift several years ago toward the restoration of Huntington Lodge at the College’s Newcomb Campus.

In 2012, the Morgans took another step in their support of the facilities at the Newcomb Campus by helping refurbish the Adirondack Interpretive Center to create the Elsbeth & Charles Morgan Northern Forest Room. The opening of the new space was celebrated with a ribbon cutting in May.

Colorful murals — painted by well-known local artist Bob McNamara — now grace the walls of the room. The murals depict wildlife and wildlife habitats of the Adirondacks and invite visitors to explore the natural and human history of the region.

The Morgans not only support the College financially, but also through leadership. Charles, is an emeritus member of the ESF College Foundation board and created the 1911 Society, named for the year of the College’s founding. Members of the 1911 Society have given a yearly unrestricted gift to the ESF Annual Fund of at least $1,911.

Betsy, also a former member of ESF College Foundation board, serves on the board of the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake.

A Foundation of SupportDiana Bendz ’68 believes in giving back. After she graduated from ESF as the first woman in the polymer chemistry curriculum, she spent her career at IBM, eventually rising to the senior-most job at the company’s Endicott complex, where more than a dozen of the company’s business units occupied more than a million square feet of operations and administrative space.

Bendz joined the ESF College Foundation Board of Directors in 2008 and currently serves as its president.

“I’ve had a successful career, in part because of the excellent instruction and experiences at ESF,” Bendz said. “The real-world education along with the scientific depth of the chemistry curriculum provided a unique educational experience, preparing me well for the future career. I joined the Foundation to help enable other students to experience what I experienced.”

Bendz is also a strong supporter of the 1911 Society, providing an annual unrestricted gift greater than $1,911. The 1911 Society is named for the year of the College’s founding.

“Unrestricted gifts such as those from the 1911 Society enable the Foundation to support students and the institution in a variety of ways that specific endowments and institutional support don’t necessarily provide for,” she said.

Charting A Path for Student Success“I’ve had a prosperous career partially enabled by the education of (ESF’s) PBE program,” said John Dean, ESF alum and supporter.

That is the sentiment behind the John Dean Endowed Scholarship, which supports undergraduate students studying in the College’s Department of Paper and Bioprocess Engineering.

John Dean graduated from ESF in 1959. His career has spanned four decades in the paper and forest products industry as he moved from paper mill technician to vice president of operations to chief executive officer.

However, the value of the scholarship goes well beyond the $25,000 gift. Dean, like many who contribute to scholarships at ESF, returned to campus this fall to speak with PBE students. “Our students greatly benefit from the scholarship support and enjoy the interaction that comes with knowing the donors,” said Deborah Dewitt, secretary of the Syracuse Pulp and Paper Foundation.

“The interaction gives the students first-hand knowledge of the industry and they also receive guidance regarding their chosen career path,” she said.

Advancing Sustainability“The Bristol-Myers Squibb Sustainability Fellowship is important to ESF graduate students because it has the potential to financially reward competitive work in the realm of sustainable practices,” said Scott Shannon, associate provost and dean of the Graduate School.

Bristol-Myers Squibb, a global biopharmaceutical company, provides $15,000 annually to support the fellowship that helps offset research, travel and living expenses for students completing their master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation.

“Many of our graduate students struggle at some point to find funding to continue their education through to degree completion,” said Shannon. “This is most common near the end of a student’s degree program; just when they are on the threshold of successfully moving on to the next stage of their career, many students find it difficult to complete their dissertation or thesis while continuing to work as a research or graduate assistant. A fellowship like this one recognizes the quality of their work to date and provides the financial foundation needed to focus on degree completion without an ongoing work obligation. “

Proposals are based on topics related to sustainability. The recipient is selected by a cross-disciplinary team of faculty with academic specializations in sustainability-related topics.

Bristol-Myers Squibb has long been an advocate of sustainability. “Partnering with ESF strengthens our external alignment with our own sustainability goals and programs,” said Rick Pooler, a member of the company’s law department and an ESF College Foundation, Inc., board member. “ESF is the perfect partner for that environmental focus.”

Paying It ForwardWhen Al Marsters ’66, ’76, broke his leg during his junior year at ESF, he couldn’t work during the summer, leaving him unable to earn the money he needed to return to college. He got some help, however, through scholarship support from the Henry Buckley Foundation fund, which enabled him to return to ESF and finish his degree. He earned his bachelor’s degree and later his master’s degree, both in forest resources management.

Marsters went on to work for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation where he was the hunter safety sportsman education coordinator. In 2013 he endowed the A. DeForest Marsters Scholarship Fund in honor of his great-grandfather, for whom Marsters was named. His ancestor was a lieutenant in the Union Army during the Civil War who escaped from Andersonville prison and formed his own regiment.

The scholarship supports students with financial need from Marsters’ home county of Chenango in New York state’s Southern Tier. “If I hadn’t had some income, I wouldn’t have been back. The scholarship made it possible to survive a year,” said Marsters. Preference is given to students who, like Marsters, are active in hunting, fishing and trapping.

A Legacy of Student SupportFor Robert Hick ’54, ’58, ESF is in his family’s blood. His father, R. Milton Hick ’20, was a close friend of Joseph Illick, the popular dean of the College from 1944 to 1951, and served as alumni director for the College before he went on to a successful career with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Robert completed both bachelor and master of science degrees at ESF in wood products engineering. After graduating, he spent his career with DuPont, focusing on wood products and later moving into the automotive industry, helping DuPont move into Asian and European markets.

Encouraged by his father to support ESF, Robert decided to focus on two areas: the natural sciences, in particular silviculture and forest management to honor his father’s life and career and wood technology, which represents Robert’s own strong interest.

To that end, he established the R. Milton Hick ’20 and Robert M. Hick ’54, ’58 Scholarship Fund. “(From my father) I developed a sense of understanding what my role and responsibility in life should be,” he said. Building on that foundation at ESF helped him achieve financial gain and made him want to honor his father and give back to ESF.
