Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time - 02 September 2018 - Washing Up. We want our

children to come to the table with clean hands. We want our elected

officials to have “clean hands” in what they do. We want them to speak with clean lips, too. We even want the work of hands and words of lips to reflect treasured values. Clean hands and lips to reflect pure heart and clean intents. This is much harder “washing up”, is it not! All the biblical texts today help us look within.

(James) How will I care for orphans and widows and those afflicted this week?

(Mark) How will my clean heart bear out what I say and do?

Dear Saint Edward Parish Family:

We must always be aware that all gifts are from God, and that we are called to be good stewards, using the gifts God has given us, including financial gifts, wisely and in a way that contributes to the ongoing Mission of the Church and to the Glory of God.

At the end of each fiscal year, the parish submits to the diocese an annual accounting of our finances. These reports are reviewed by the pastoral and finance councils prior to submission. Below is the summation of the financial report submitted to the diocese for St. Edward parish for the previous fiscal year.

Please note that as was expected, we are showing a negative balance for the last fiscal year. That is because the $132,000 that was spent on the stained glass window and on the school roofing projects was collected during the previous fiscal year, but spent during the fiscal year being reported.

EL PRECEPTO MÁS IMPORTANTE De vez en cuando, los periódicos y las revistas publican, a modo de “relleno”, diversas leyes que siguen en los libros pero que parecen ridículas en nuestra época. En una ciudad de California, es ilegal tener dos bañeras dentro de una casa. Cuando se pasó la ley era un lujo tener acceso al agua corrien-te, pero ahora que no lo es la ley parece ridícula. Sin embar-go, el valor humano de proteger y preservar los recursos más valiosos sigue teniendo vigencia, esto se manifiesta en mu-chas leyes, que nos parecen muy acertadas, cuyo fin es prote-ger el medio ambiente. Sucede lo mismo con los preceptos religiosos. Lo que Jesús desdeña hoy es la actitud de los de-más respecto a los preceptos rituales, una actitud que se vuelve casi idólatra cuando se obedecen los preceptos por el mero hecho de obedecerlos. Lo que Jesús enseña es que el cumplimiento de los preceptos rituales externos sólo tiene valor cuando simboliza nuestra predisposición interior a cum-plir la voluntad de Dios. Nuestras vidas deben obedecer el precepto supremo de Dios: amar a Dios por encima de todo y al prójimo igual que nos amamos a nosotros. La religión cató-lica es rica en costumbres, tradiciones e incluso preceptos. Al seguir escuchando la voz de Cristo, siempre debemos exami-nar nuestro corazón y nuestras prácticas rituales para asegu-rarnos de que el amor a Dios y al prójimo se halle por encima de todo lo demás. Hay que saber que en muchas culturas la falta de descendencia es considerada un castigo divino. Dios, en su divina misericordia, ampara a estas parejas dándoles una prole. Esta pareja de la línea del rey David tampoco podía en-gendrar familia. En una fiesta judía, Joaquín (el hombre a quien Dios lleva) fue rechazado en el templo por no tener hijo o hija. Desdichado se retiró al desierto para implorar la bendición de Dios. Su esposa Ana (gracia, amor, plegaria) también imploró al Señor hasta que un ángel le anunció que Dios la había escucha-do. Hello Dear Friends, Last week I wrote about how my heart was struggling in light of everything that is going on in the Church. That pain and struggle is still there. But now I’ve had a bit of time to pray, talk with people, and read the scriptures. I’ve been able to process my feelings and connect with people who can relate to my pain. I’ve also thrown myself into my parish family. You, dear friends are helping! Seeing you practice your faith, spending time with parents who want to see their children confirmed in the faith, and seeing our community pray together has been beautiful reminders that what our Church needs now more than ever is you. It needs people to show up. It needs people to pray together. It needs us to walk with each other in our joys and pain. It needs us to be the voice for the voiceless. It needs us to listen to others. It needs us to focus on service to others. It needs us to be Catholic. The readings from the past two weeks have also been comforting. Last week, we were reminded, in the face of struggles “Lord, to whom else shall we go?” Today, Jesus is once again going up against the scribes and the Pharisees. They thought they caught him and his followers breaking the law. Jesus meets them head on and calls them out for their own unfaithfulness. He says, “ Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” It’s consoling to know that Christ experiences our pain and frustrations along with us. The Gospel is paired with a humbling reminder of what we need to do to live out our faith: “Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” Friends, thank you for being a constant reminder to do what God has always called us to do—be a community of believers caring for others and living out our Gospel calling.
