Where West rebid 1NT, the normal sequenceof plays would lead to at least seven tricks. At ourtable, West rebid 2♦, which became the final con-tract. North led the ♣A and quickly switched tothe ♥K, taken by West immediately expecting, ofcourse, the suit to be 5-1.

Declarer then drew three rounds of trumps andplayed a spade to the 10, jack and king. East re-turned the ♥8 and West was so shocked by thesight of another heart with South that she ducked-- obviously, covering the ♥8 ensures the contractbecause the intermediates are good enough tobuild a trick. This was the ending (declarer hadfour tricks):

♠4♥Q 10♦---♣K J 4

♠--- ♠Q 9 8♥J 7 ♥6♦9 2 ♦---♣10 9 ♣Q 8

♠A 7 5 2♥---♦---♣6 5

South must play a club, and the only sure wayto defeat the contract is for North to duck. If Northwins the ♣K and plays a spade, declarer sets upthe suit and can get there with the ♣Q. If Northwins the ♣K and exits with a club, declarer canplay the ♠Q and discard a heart. South wins buthas nothing left to play but spades.

If North ducks the second round of clubs,South still has an exit card in the third club whenin with the ♠A.

providing them with leading players as partners. When Matt isn’t working on upgrading

OKbridge or on his Ph.D., he spends his time withhis wife Merja and their daughter Anna. Matt andMerja are learning how to sail, but Matt’s mainoutside interest is science fiction and anything todo with space and space research.

Matt met Merja when she came to the U.S. in1989 from her native Finland to study with Matt’sfather, a geneticist. When she returned to Finland, she and Matt kept in touch via Internet. This wasthe motivation for OKbridge. They were marriedin 1990. r

The opening diamond lead went to the jackand king, and Stein cashed two top hearts folllowedby a third heart to East’s queen. She won the dia-mond return and cashed the ♥J. Of course theseheart plays placed quite a discarding burden onWest. She didn’t want to give up all her good dia-monds, so she pitched one club.

Reading the situation with absolute accuracy,Stein cashed the ♣A and pushed the jack throughWest when East dropped the 10. As a result shetook 10 tricks -- four clubs, three hearts, two dia-monds and a spade.

A new ideaSomething new will be tried

Sunday in connection with theSwiss Teams. A special IMP Pairsevent will be staged in the eveningfor all those players who wish todrop out of the Swiss events afterthe first session.

If you play in the afternoon you will not haveto pay an entry fee to play in the special game.New entries also will be accepted, but they of coursewill have to pay the usual entry fee.

The new game takes the place of the consola-tion events. It will be stratified.

Any team wishing to continue in the SwissTeams may do so, no matter what their record is.

Lynn Deas of the United States II Venice Cupteam was presented with the Sporting Award forthe courageous strength she has shown for the pastyear despite a crippling illness. Henry Francis, president of the sponsoring International BridgePress Association, made the presentation during apress conference at the World Championships inHammamet, Tunisia, in early November.

This was the first time this award, formerly calledthe John Simon Sportsmanship Award, has been pre-sented since 1985. It is awarded only when the IBPAfeels there is a truly worthwhile candidate.

Francis said the IBPA was unanimous in itsselection of Deas. “Lynn has shown outstanding

courage and tremendous willpower by playing top-level bridge while confined to a wheelchair,” saidFrancis. Deas is suffering from myasthenia gravis,an incurable debilitating disease. She is subject tofrequent hospital stays. As a matter of fact, shewas confined to a hospital in Hammamet for thefirst five days of the tournament.

Following is the tribute to Lynn that accompa-nied the award:

The world’s top woman player, measured byWBF masterpoints, is the American star, Lynn Deas.In the past 10 years she has won four world titles:the Venice Cup in Jamaica in 1987, in Perth, Aus-tralia, in 1989, and in Yokohama, Japan, in 1991,and the Women’s Team Olympiad in Rhodes,Greece, in 1996. She also has won countless NorthAmerican championships.

This has been accomplished in the face of adisabling health problem which has become pro-gressively worse during her decade of success. Forthe past year she has been confined to a wheel-chair. She plays bridge, with all her accustomedbrilliance, in a horizontal position.

When she arrived in Hammamet, she was im-mediately hospitalized with pneumonia, a far moreserious development for her than it would be for aperson in normal health. She was unable to com-pete until the next-to-last day of the round-robin.

For her dignity and cheerfulness in the face ofthis heavy burden, the IBPA has named her as therecipient of its 1997 Sporting Award.

IBPA Sporting Award goes to Lynn Deas

Lynn Deas not only helped her team finish third in the Venice Cup -- she also won the Sporting Award sponsored bythe International Bridge Press Association. This photo was taken at the prize-giving ceremony. Behind Lynn, left toright: WBF representative Cecil Cook, Irina Levitina, WBF representative Virgil Anderson, Kathie Wei-Sender,Juanita Chambers, Beth Palmer, Kerri Sanborn and WBF representative Barbara Nudelman.

Elegance or Utility?By Barry Rigal

I had the choice of which opponent to squeezeon the following hand -- but one was a straight-forward simple squeeze, the other was a complexand exciting criss-cross. Which would you playfor?

Dbl (!) Pass 3NT (!) All PassWe reached a sensible spot by a less than sen-

sible route. On the opening spade lead, I hoppedwith the ace and played the ♣Q which lost to theace. Back came the ♦Q to the king, and I returnedto hand with a club. I advanced the ♥J, hopingthat it might get ducked. But it was covered, so Iwon and ran clubs to reach this position:

♠ J 10 9♥ ? 7♦ --♣ --

♠ 8 7 ♠ K♥ Q ♥ 9 5♦ K 5 ♦ 3♣ -- ♣ 9

♠ --♥ ? 6♦ J 10 7♣ --

When the last club is led, I have to decide whichdefender to squeeze. If you want to make Souththe victim, pitch dummy’s spade, cash the ♥Q,and come back to the ♠K to catch South in the redsuits.

If North is the one you want to make suffer, you pitch dummy’s diamond and cash the ♦K.This way North is caught in a criss-cross squeeze.

Since South started life with four hearts, he isa slight favorite to hold the ♥10, so sacrificingelegance for utility, I played to catch South. Itwound up being a triumph for sacrificing elegancefor utility.

Open Board-a-Match Teamscompete for Mitchell trophy

The Open Board-a-Match Teams will begincompeting today for the Victor Mitchell Trophy, which honors one of bridge’s most colorful char-acters -- a champion player, philosopher and men-tor to the stars.

“For more than 30 years,” said Ron Andersenin 1994, “Vic has been the experts’ mentor fromcoast to coast. His unknown contributions to theworld of tournament bridge are far greater thanthose of better known people.”

Mitchell, a Grand Life Master with more than10,000 masterpoints, won five North Americanchampionships including the Spingold in 1956 and1959, the Life Master Men’s Pairs in 1962 and theMen’s Teams in 1962 and 1963.

He represented the United States in interna-tional competition several times. His best finisheswere second in the 1964 World Team Olympiadand runner-up in the World Mixed Teams, play-ing with his wife Jacqui, Sam and Tubby Staymanand Jimmy Cayne.

Mitchell didn’t play much in his later yearsbut he was usually on hand at NABCs to see hisfriends and give advice.

Mitchell claimed that he never played bridgefor glory or prestige. “The people,” he said, “aremore important than the bridge. I’ve met some ofthe most fantastic people playing bridge. I’ve hada ball.”

He was inducted into the Bridge Hall of Fameprior to the 1996 Spring NABC in Philadelphia.

Jo Morse didn’t want to lead hearts -- clearlyWest had a holding in that suit. A spade was out -- East had something there. She considered a dia-mond lead too unilateral, so that left clubs. Sheled the 7 -- this worked very well indeed. It wascovered by the 9 and 10 and won with the king.

Declarer naturally tried the spade finesse, butMarty Schiff ducked in tempo. Next declarer leada heart, and Morse jumped in with her queen. Sheled the ♣6, covered by the jack and queen, andducked by declarer. Declarer was forced to winthe next club. And now he thought he had a lock -- four spades, three hearts, a diamond and twoclubs.

Yes, that’s right -- he tried a second spade fi-nesse, and his mouth fell open when Schiff pro-duced the queen! Schiff cashed his other club trickand led a diamond. Declarer actually ducked, butit would have done him no good to rise with theace -- the communications were already broken. If he took the ace, he could go to the board withthe ♥J and take two spades -- but then he wouldhave no way to get back to his hand for the twogood hearts. Down one for almost all thematchpoints.

Friends honor Nudelmanfor years of service

Barbara Nudelman has been working for bridgefor more than 30 years in a variety of jobs that are toonumerous to list. “You name the job,” she says, “andI’ve done it.”

Just because she’s leaving the ACBL Board of Di-rectors after 12 years doesn’t mean she’ll quit workingfor bridge. For one thing, there’s the 1998 SummerNABC in Chicago, of which she is chairman.

Dozens of Nudelman’s friends gathered Saturdaynight at the Adam’s Mark to say thanks for all her hardwork and dedication.

There’s been a lot of it. Nudelman joined her unitboard in 1967 and has held dozens of positions in along career. She has served on the ACBL Board of Gov-ernors, has been president of the ACBL Education Foun-dation, and ACBL representative to the World BridgeFederation.

She was elected to the ACBL Board of Directors in1985 and served as ACBL President in 1993.

Although she has enjoyed her service, Nudelmansays, “All good things must come to an end. It’s time tomove on.”

Nudelman says she is delighted that HarriettBuckman, former president of the ACBL EducationalFoundation, will represent District 13 on the ACBLBoard starting next year. “She will be quite an asset,”Nudelman says.

Another interest that will keep Nudelman busy af-ter she leaves the ACBL Board is Bridge Ventures,ACBL’s for-profit division which promotes cash-prizeevents. She reminds ACBL members that there will bea cash-prize tournament at the 1998 Spring NABC inReno. “It will be a great event,” she says.

In the meantime, Nudelman avers, she will staybusy -- and, most likely, visible in bridge circles. “I’mnot going anywhere,” she says.

Bob Hamman congratulates with Barbara Nudelmanduring the reception honoring her Saturday night.

“This is the first time for us to play together. It’s really exciting.” said a beaming Moss.

Seamon added, “After we FedEx-ed our sys-tem notes to each other, we practiced several timeson OKbridge. Everything seemed to go well to-day.”

The pair won the four-session event by fewerthan four matchpoints.

The Coffin Trophy is one of the oldest andmost historic trophies in play in NABC competi-tion. For years there was only one “National”Women’s Team championship -- and that was aboard-a-match event.

Donated by Charles Emmet Coffin in 1933,the trophy was contested at the “Winter Nation-als” in the days when there were only two NABCs-- Summer and Winter. In 1963 the event wasmoved to the new Spring NABC where it was inplay until the format was changed to knockoutteams in 1976.

For the next decade, there was no nationalWomen’s Board-a-Match championship. Swissteams had become popular and a Women’s Swisswith NABC rating was established in the earlyEighties. But board-a-match play for women wasnot dead -- it was just in hiatus for a few years.

The Coffin Trophy was revived at the FallNABC in Atlanta in 1986 and new life was breathedinto women’s board-a-match play.

Many experts consider board-a-match the mostexacting form of the game. Equal weight is ac-corded each deal and every trick is important whenscoring is board-by-board.

The team that took the Women’s Board-a-Match in Atlanta in 1986 was: Dorothy Truscott,Lisa Berkowitz, Joyce Lilie and Jan Martel. Sincethen the Coffin Trophy has gone to:

Junior Corps addssix new members

Six new members were added to the ACBL’sJunior Corps, the showcase group for theorganization’s best young players.

The names of the new members were an-nounced Saturday during the reception for Juniorplayers on the day designated to recognize ACBL’syoung members.

Joining the Junior Corps are Matt Shuman,Richardson TX; John Oakley, Austin TX; SamHirschman, Southfield MI; Roman Shapiro, FairLawn NJ; Sam Erlichman, Flushing NY, and KentMignocchi, Los Angeles.

Aileen Osofsky, chairman of the ACBL Good-will Committee, presented Junior Corps pins toHirschman, Shapiro and Mignocchi. The other newmembers did not make it to St. Louis. There arenow 49 members of ACBL’s Junior Corps.

Charlotte Blaiss, ACBL’s Junior coordinator, announced that the ACBL Board of Directors hasvoted to continue the Junior bridge camps everyother year.

Jonathan Steinberg, vice president of the ACBLEducational Foundation, announced that the foun-dation has agreed to make $200 grants to each ACBLJunior who is accepted to the bridge camp whichbegins after the 1998 Summer NABC in Chicago.

Blaiss said she expects between 50 and 75ACBL members to attend the bridge camp.

Steinberg said he hopes that the players whobenefit from the grant and other Junior programswill repay the generosity by promoting bridge.“Write about your experiences, promote bridge, start clubs at your high schools and colleges,”Steinberg urged the youngsters, “so the ACBL canhave a great future.”

Much of the Junior reception was taken up witha lively debate about the format for the trials todetermine ACBL’s representative to the next WorldJunior Bridge Championship, in 1999.

Dan Morse, chairman of the InternationalEvents Committee of the ACBL Board of Direc-tors, attended the Junior reception to solicit inputfrom the Junior players as to the format and sched-uling of the trials.

Many of the Juniors expressed concern that atrials event might be scheduled in conflict withone or more of the major events at the SummerNABC, when the trials are usually held.

Chris Willenken said many, if not all, the Jun-ior players want to take part in the Spingold Knock-out Teams and are worried that they might missout on the Junior trials if they are still in theSpingold when the team trials begin.

Tom Carmichael said it appeared that the ACBLwants the Juniors to train hard to prepare them-selves to represent their country in internationalevents. “Is there a better event to train in than theSpingold?” Carmichael said.

Morse also asked for opinions about the for-mat for the trials, the options being team trials, pair trials, selection by a committee or some com-bination of the three.

In straw votes, the Junior rejected pair trials butseemed to favor sending two teams -- one the teamtrials winner, the other selected by a committee.

Morse said the International Events Committee -- including Joan Gerard, Nudelman, Cecil Cook,Virgil Anderson and Joan Remey Moore -- will makea decision on the issue during the NABC.

and taking more lessons from Eric Seigle, whoteaches at Carlton W. Washburne School, whereJonathan is in the eighth grade. Idyth also teachesthere.

The teenager says he likes bridge so muchbecause it involves mathematics and logic. He alsolikes conventions, and he plays weak two-bids,transfers, Stayman and Blackwood. “It’s a fungame,” he says.

“Jonathan is a numbers guy,” says Idyth, “andhe’s never met a game he doesn’t like.”

Besides bridge, Jonathan favors chess,Scrabble and poker. “He’s a mean Scrabbleplayer,” says Idyth.

Jonathan became aware of the NABC in St.Louis through a mailing to young players. He tele-phoned Charlotte Blaiss, ACBL’s Junior coordi-nator, to find out more. Once the Zimblers wereassured Jonathan would have partners, the trip wasa go.

It was a busy weekend for the Zimbler family. While Jonathan and Idyth were in St. Louis,Jonathan’s father and brother Adam were attendinga debate tournament in the Chicago area. His sisterSarah attends the University of Pennsylvania.

Jonathan and his mom left St. Louis Sunday.“We both have to be back at school on Monday,”she says.

In his first game at an NABC -- a 0-5 gameSaturday afternoon -- Jonathan was fifth overalland fourth in his section -- his first red points.

Jonathan was aware that next door to wherehe was playing the Life Master Open Pairs andLife Master Women’s Pairs were in progress. Askedif he expects to be in a Life Master game one day,he didn’t hesitate: “Of course.” r
