1 Determine your company’s server needs. Decide where to locate each server physically, taking into considerationlocal and wide-area networks and the function of each server.2. Develop a hierarchical name scheme that includes organization and organizational unit names.3. Decide whether you need more than one Domino domain.4. Understand how server name format affects network name-to-address resolution for servers. Ensure that the DNSrecords for your company are the correct type for the server names.5. Determine which server services to enable, and which certificate authority to use.6. Install the Domino server on the server machine; install the Domino Administrator on the administrator’s machine.7. Complete network-related server setup.8. If the Domino server is offering Internet services, set up Internet site documents. There are some instances whereInternet site documents are required.9. Specify administration preferences.10. Create additional certifier IDs to support the hierarchical name scheme, and set up recovery information for thecertifier Ids.11. Add the administrator’s ID to the recovery information for the certifier IDs and then distribute the certifier IDs, asnecessary, to other administrators.12. Register additional servers.13. If you did not choose to do so during the first server setup, create a group in the Domino Directory for alladministrators, and give this group Manager access to all databases on the first server.14. (Optional) Install IBM DB2 running with a Domino 8 server. Required if you want to create and use DB2-enabledNotes databases.15. (Optional) Install an IBM Lotus Sametime server. Required if you want awareness and chat in the Notes client. Note:If you have a version 7.5.1 Sametime server, you must install it to a Domino 7.x server. The Domino 8 installation kitincludes a Domino 7.x server for this purpose. For more information, see the Sametime Information Center athttp://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/sametime/v7r5m1/topic/com.ibm.help.sametime.imlu.doc/st_imlu_imintro_getstart_c.html.16. (Optional) Install an Activities server on a WebSphere Application Server. Both are required if you want to useActivities from within the Notes client.17. (Optional) Install an IBM WebSphere Portal server. Required if you want to use composite applications that containportlets.18. (Optional configuration) To use the Portal administrative user interface on the Portal server to administer bothDomino and WebSphere Portal, configure Domino and Portal server federated administration.19. (Optional) WebSphere Portal composite application support for Lotus Notes (install on the WebSphere Portalserver). Required if you want to work with composite applications that contain portlets, or edit portlets using theComposite Application Editor.20. Install and set up additional servers.

Step 5: Install a Notes client

1. Install the client software. Each type of client has its own installation image2. Connect to a Domino server.3. Connect to an Internet mail server.4. Connect to a newsgroup server.5. Connect to a directory server for Internet address searching.6. Connect to the Internet through a proxy server.7. Set up a schedule for replicating (downloading) mail.
