The Iona College men's basketball team (9-12, 7-7 MAAC) rides a season-long four-game win streak into Albany when it takes on Siena (13-10, 9-5 MAAC) at the Times Union Center. With just 2.5 games separating first and seventh place, the game proves to be pivotal for the Gaels' climb up the MAAC standings and the Saints contention for the regular season title. IONA VS. AT THE HELM• Associate head coach Tra Arnold - in his second year at Iona - continues to serve as acting head coach for tonight's contest as Tim Cluess continues to monitor a health matter.• Before coming to Iona, Arnold spent sixsuccessful seasons head coach at Odessa College in Northwest Texas. He served threeyears prior as head coach at Blinn College.• Arnold mentored more than 30 future NCAA Division I players including: LJ Figueroa (St. John's), Jermaine Haley (West Virginia), Keandre Cook (Missouri State), Josh Gray (NBA Pelicans, LSU), and Devin Davis (G-League Magic, Houston).• Director of Operations John Mateyko is serving as an assistant coach of the program in Cluess' absence and the elevation of Arnold's responsibilities.

CUPID'S ARROW• Iona has won 13 straight MAAC regular season and tournament games on Valentines Day or later (from 3/3/18-present). • In 10 seasons under Tim Cluess, Iona has posted a 56-14 (.800) record from February 14 through the completion of the MAAC Championship including 17 of the last 19 contests dating back to the 2017 tournament.

Former Director of Athletics, b a s e b a l l a n d m e n ' s basketball coach and Iona alumnus Eugene Roberti '53 passed away at the age of 89 on February 8, 2020.

Roberti served as head coach of the Gaels for two seasons from

1973-75 after serving as an assistant coach to Jim McDermott and head baseball coach at Iona College. Roberti went on to coach basketball St. Francis Brooklyn and golf at NYU.

Roberti is survived by by his beloved wife of 68 years, Lucy, and cherished family; children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren,

RICHIE GUERIN’S #14 HANGS IN THE RAFTERS• Iona honored the legacy of Richie Guerin ‘54 byretiringhisnumber14onJan.31,2014thefirstever in school history.• Guerin is an Iona College Goal Club (1983), Marine Corps Sports (2004), and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2013) inductee who starred for the Maroon & Gold from 1951-1954.• He rewrote the basketball record books at Iona, scoring 1,375 points and graduated as the leading scorer in school history.• A two-time All-Metropolitan selection with the Gaels, he scored a then school-record 40 points against John Carroll in 1954 and was the firstGael to score 40 or more points in a game. • Following his playing days at Iona, Guerin played with the National Basketball Association’s New York Knicks from 1956-1963 and was a player-coach of the St. Louis/Atlanta Hawks franchise for nine years.• In 13 years as a professional player, Guerin accumulated 14,676 points (17.3 per game), 4,278 rebounds (5.1 per game), and 4,211 assists (5.0 per game) over 848 games.GAEL GREATSIn addition to Naismith Hall of Famer Richie Guerin ‘54, here are additional significant names in Iona basketball history:• Jim Valvano - legendary head coach at Iona from 1975-80 who “Dared To Dream” to win a nationalchampionshipwiththeGaelsandfinallydid in 1983, albeit with North Carolina State. Gaels in the Pros (as of 2/10/20)

1. Jan Svandrlik (6'6"-F-94, graduated '18, plays pro in Czech Republic) led BK Opava to a victory against the eighth-ranked BK Decin (10-13) 91-77 in the Czech Republic NBL on Wednesday night. He scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 30 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Svandrlik's second season in pro basketball. BK Opava (18-6) is placed second in Places 1-8 group. This season Svandrlik averages 7.0ppg and 4.0rpg.

2. Sean Armand (6'5"-SG-91, graduated '14, plays in France) led ES Chalon-Sur-Saone to a 3-point victory over the 16th-ranked Boulazac Basket (6-16) 73-70 in the French Jeep ELITE ProA in Saturday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Armand scored 17 points. ES Chalon-Sur-Saone (13-8) is placed fifth in the Jeep ELITE ProA.Armandhasindividually a very good year with high stats. He averages 18.3ppg, 2.0rpg and 3.3apg in four games he played so far.

3. Scott Machado (6'1"-G-90, graduated '12, currently in Australia) contributed to an easy victory against the seventh-ranked Adelaide 36ers (12-15) 99-80 in the Australian NBL last Saturday. He scored 12 points, had 7 rebounds and dished 6 assists (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line) in 27 minutes. Cairns Taipans (16-10) are placed third in the NBL. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now everygamewillbecritical.It'sMachado'sfirstseasonwiththeteam.This year Machado has very high stats. He averages 16.8ppg, 3.7rpg, 8.1apg and 1.4spg. Machado is a naturalized Brazilian.

4. Lamont Jones (6'0"-PG-90, graduated '13, plays pro in Germany) could not help Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt (5-13) in their last game. Despite Jones' very good performance Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt was edged83-81on the road by the much higher-ranked (#4) Crailsheim Merlins. He recorded 15 points and added 4 assists. It was Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt's fourth consecutive loss in a row. It's Jones' first seasonwith the team. Jones has very impressive stats this year17.7ppg, 2.3rpg, 5.1apg and 1.1spg in 15 games.

5. Kiril Wachsmann (6'8"-C-84, graduated '06, plays in Uruguay) contributed to an easy victory against the seventh-ranked Hebraica (12-9) crushing them 99-73 in a derby game in the Uruguayan LUB in Monday night's game. Wachsmann scored 12 points and grabbed 8 reboundsin30minutes.MalvinMontevideo(16-6)isplacedfirstintheLUB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. The Regular Season already ended. Wachsmann has relatively good stats this season 10.1ppg, 9.8rpg and 1.9apg. He has also Uruguayan passport.

6. Isaiah Williams (6'7"-G/F-92, graduated '16, currently in Switzerland) was the major contributor in Neuchatel's victory against the eighth-ranked Vevey Riviera 83-74 in the Swiss SBL last Friday. Williams scored 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. This year Williams averages 8.2ppg, 5.3rpg and 2.8apg in 18 games.

7. Michael Glover (6'8"-C/F-87, graduated '12, plays in Indonesia) led NSH to a victory over the seventh-ranked Bima Perkasa 60-55 in the Indonesian IBL in Saturday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Glover had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 11 rebounds. Glover has very impressive stats this year 22.1ppg and 11.9rpg in eight games.

8. Steve Burtt (6'3"-G-84, graduated '06, currently in Argentina) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Olimpico de La Banda crushing them 81-61 in the Argentinian La Liga last Tuesday. Burtt scored only 4 points in 22 minutes. Burtt has relatively good stats this season 10.3ppg and 1.3rpg. He is a naturalized Ukrainian.

9. Taylor Bessick (6'9"-F/C-92, graduated '17, plays pro in Georgia) was not able to help Tskhum-Abkhazeti in their game against Cactus Tbilisi in theGeorgian Superleague. He recorded 8 points. It was his firstgame for Tskhum-Abkhazeti this season. His team lost 68-74.

• Tim Cluess was named 12th head coach of the Iona College men’s basketball program on April 8, 2010 and is in his 10th season with the Gaels.• Came to New Rochelle with an impressive 20-year coaching resume after spending four seasons as head coach at LIU Post in Brookville, NY.• One thing can be said, he is a winner. Iona College men's basketball is proud to announce a special celebration on Friday, February 21, at its home contest vs. Rider at the Hynes Center. Forty years ago, to the day, on February 21, 1980, the Gaels completed a historic upset of No. 2 Louisville, 77-60, at Madison Square Garden. In recognition of the anniversary, members of the 1979-1980 team will be honored during the game. All former Iona men's basketball student-athletes from the 70+ years of the program are invited to attend the game and reception following the contest. "It is an honor to invite back members of the most iconic team in program history in addition to all former men's basketball players who have worn the Maroon & Gold," said Director of Athletics Matthew Glovaski. "I look forward to celebrating the historic 1980 victory that has meant so much to our program and honoring all of the men's basketball student-athletes that have represented us so well over the years."

All former players and coaches receive complimentary game tickets and are invited to a postgame reception in the Hynes Center.
