Washington: The US admi- nistration on Friday tempora- rily suspended the expedited premium processing of H-1B visas as part of its squeeze on what it said was an overload- ed guest worker programme. The suspension came even as Delhi pressed, without succe- ss, for a fair and rational appr- oach on the issue from a trade and business perspective. By paying an additional $1,225 premium, companies can have an H-1B applicati- on processed within 15 days, whereas a standard process takes three to six months. The decision was anno- unced hours after top Indi- an mandarins—foreign sec- retary S Jaishankar and co- mmerce secretary Rita Teo- tia—had urged the US to vi- ew the H-1B issue as a trade and services matter, not an immigration one. “If the US’s intention is to bring back American companies to the US and attract more foreign investment, it is im- portant that America rema- ins competitive. So, there would actually be (a) growi- ng need for this partnersh- ip,” Jaishankar said.
