'70 Saal Azadi-Zara Yaad Karo Qurbani' Defence Minister leads Islanders in paying rich tributes to Freedom Fighters at Cellular Jail Port Blair, Aug 13 As part of the nationwide celebrations of 70th year of Independence captioned '70 Saal Azadi-Zara Yaad Karo Qurbani', the A&N Administration organized a function at the National Memorial Cellular Jail here this morning. The Union Defence Minister, Shri Manohar Parrikar was the chief guest at this historical event. Paying rich tributes to the freedom fighters who were incarcerated in the Cellular Jail, the Defence Minister, in his address on the occasion, recalled the invaluable contributions of the freedom fighters, who made supreme sacrifices for the cause of the Motherland. "I feel honoured to visit these Islands and pay tributes to the freedom fighters. I am privileged to visit the solitary cell of Veer Savarkar who was incarcerated in Cellular Jail for 11 years", the Defence Minister said adding that the songs and writings of Veer Savarkar has been a source of great inspiration for him to do his best for the country. The Defence Minister said that for the first time in the country, such a unique programme has been designed by the Govt. of India, under the vision & guidance of the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modiji, who specifically directed the Ministers to personally visit the places of historical importance/birth place of freedom fighters to further educate the people and remind them about their contributions and sacrifices in freeing India from the foreign rule. The Defence Minister said, it is our bounden responsibility to create awareness among the younger generation about the history of freedom struggle and selfless sacrifices of the freedom fighters, due to whose efforts, we are breathing the air of freedom today. The names and deeds of the freedom fighters must be written in golden letters, the Defence Minister added. Referring to the Islands, the Defence Minister said, due to its strategic importance, the GoI has emphasized development of A&N Islands as the eastern border of the country. The Defence Minister also informed about the various development projects being carried for these Islands in sectors like, communication, air connectivity and sea- connectivity for the betterment of the people and complimented the Lt Governor and his team for the efforts as per the vision of our Hon'ble Prime Minister. The Defence Minister also wished the Islanders a very happy Independence Day-2016. He also released a set of Post Cards of paintings on Heritage and brochure on 'Heritage Walk-Naqsh-e- Kadam', and also inaugurated an art exhibition on Freedom Movement in the Art Gallery at Cellular Jail. Soon after his arrival at the Cellular Jail, the Defence Minister placed wreath at the Martyr's Column and visited the Solitary Cell where Veer Savarkar was jailed. The function at Cellular Jail was also attended by the State BJP President, Shri Vishal Jolly, other dignitaries from PBMC, PRIs and political representatives, kith & kin of Freedom Fighters, Senior Citizens, Officers of the Administration and large number of citizens. The Defence Minister also viewed the names of all freedom fighters inscribed in the jail. Speaking on the occasion, the Lt. Governor stated that following the call of the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, the programme- '70 Saal Azadi- Zara Yaad Karo Qurbani', has been organized by the A&N Administration today in a most befitting manner. "In the struggle for India's Independence, thousands of freedom fighters sacrificed themselves. The saga of Indian freedom struggle is that of patriotism and supreme sacrifices", said the Lt. Governor, calling upon one and all to work in harmony to realise the dreams of our great Nation. The A&N Islands have played a very important role in India's freedom struggle, he said. The Cellular Jail has been a mute witness to the incarcerations & tortures meted out to the revolutionary freedom fighters who were sent to 'Kala Pani'. They lived and died with one hope i.e. to achieve freedom for the country, he said. “A&N Islands are not only a tourist destination but also a great place of pilgrimage and every Indian should visit these Islands at least once in their lifetimes", the Lt. Governor said. The soul of India's freedom struggle resides in these islands, he added. The Lt. Governor remembered Veer Vinayak Savarkar, Ganesh Damodar Savarkar, Ullhas Dutt, Batindra Kumar Gosh, Mahavir Singh, Indubushan Rai, Dr Diwan Singh and other freedom fighters who gave their valuable lives for the country's Independence. The Lt. Governor exhorted the Islanders to safeguard the hard earned freedom and contribute their mite towards nation building under the guidance of Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modiji. In his address, the Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray thanked Defence Minister, Shri Manohar Parrikar for coming to these Islands for leading the ‘70 Saal Azadi- Zara Yaad Karo Qurbani’ programme. He said, the programme forms part of the direction of Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modiji, asking his Ministers to visit historical monuments in different parts of the country to pay homage to freedom fighters. Mukundo Roy, R/ o Badmash Pahad, South LG approves grant to crocodile attack victim's family Andaman District. The incident occurred on 31st July when the victim entered into water for fishing near a mangrove creek inside the Lohabarrack Crocodile Sanctuary and was attacked and drowned by a crocodile. Under the provisions of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 the committee under the chairmanship of PCCF- cum-Chief Wildlife Warden, after careful consideration of the case, had recommended for payment of Rs. 3 Lakhs as grant as per Gazette Notification No. 52, dated 18th March, 2013. The movement of all vehicular traffic shall be closed from 0830 Hrs at the following points. (ii) Gymkhana Crossing to R. K. Mission via Dharamshala and Girls School Crossing. (iii) R. K. Mission to Government Press. (iv) Annapurna to Clock Tower (v) Clock Tower to Dharamshala (vi) R. K. After the departure of the Chief Guest from the place of function, the vehicles bearing parking label “P” shall follow the route Scout Hut Junction-Vikas Bhawan-Fire Brigade-Old Telephone Exchange-APWD Crossing to their destinations. 6. After the departure of all vehicles parked inside the stadium and near Andaman Club having “P” parking label the vehicles of “P-I” parking label will be released to come to the main entrance of Netaji Stadium to pick up the guests and shall leave via Scout Hut Junction-Girls School Crossing-RK Mission and RGT Road. 7. All other vehicles without any parking label including two and four wheelers will be parked near Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex and Aberdeen Jetty. 8. The vehicles intending to proceed to South Point from Aberdeen Bazar shall be diverted towards Model School Crossing – Bengali Club – Goalghar- Secretariat Junction – Police Line and Nayagaon. 9. No heavy vehicles including Private and STS buses will be allowed to proceed to Aberdeen Bazar from Gandhi Statue and Bengali Club Junction from 0700 hrs to 1200 hrs. 10. The vehicles intending to proceed to Aberdeen Bazar from South Point shall follow the route of South Point-Shadipur-Nayagaon Junction-Police Line-RBV-Secretariat Junction and Goalghar. 11. Heavy vehicles proceeding to long route shall be diverted to Goal Ghar and Junglighat from Bengali Club. 12. All the vehicular traffic shall remain suspended in the stretches from Annapurna to Clock Tower, Clock Tower to Dharamshala, Dharamshala to R.K. Mission and Raj Niwas to National Memorial via Netaji Stadium from 0830 hrs. 13. No vehicles shall be allowed to proceed towards the place of function from any side after 0830 hrs. 14. No vehicle shall be allowed to proceed to Aberdeen Bazar after the function from any direction till the crowd gets dispersed. 15. The vehicles carrying parade contingents after dropping the contingents in front of Netaji Stadium shall proceed to Water Sports Complex towards Aberdeen Jetty and will remain stationed there. After culmination of parade they will come to Netaji Stadium via Y- Narayan Junction and proceed to their respective units with their parade contingents. 16. Further vehicles intending to proceed to GB Pant Hospital shall follow the route of Gandhi Statue- Marine Gate – Sisty Nagar – Dignabad – Sea Shore Road – Khan Jn. - Cellular Jail towards GB Pant Hospital. 17. Private tourist boats carrying tourists from Aberdeen Jetty to Ross Island, North Bay etc. should be shifted to Junglighat jetty on 15/08/2016.
