MONTHLY THEMES e a s o n s , O u r c l i m a t e ,

  W e a t h e r c y c l e s a n d

O u r E n v i r o n m e n t

This month, Preschool and After School

students  will learn about seasons, our climate,

the environment, and weather cycles.

We'll delve into how climates can change from

one geographic location to another, how the

seasons affect our landscape, animals, and

humans, and how vulnerable our planet is.  We

will explore the many ways we can make a

positive impact on our natural environment.

In Fridays' Social Cultural Studies,  we will

learn about winter festivals: Hanukkah,

Christmas, and Shabeh Yalda (winter solstice)

and how these rituals are similar and related to

our planet.

IDEAS AND RESOURCES  FOR YOUR FAMILY

1. Collect fallen leaves

together and use them for

decorating your holiday table.

2. Talk about the seasons in

the area(s) where you grew

up, and the types of activities

you enjoyed as a child each

season.

3. Rake a pile of leaves

together and jump in!

4. Go to the mountains and

enjoy the snow!

Many of us have been movedby the recent fires.  We knowthis is a difficult topic todiscuss with preschool andkindergarten aged children. Let's help them feelempowered at a time whenmost of us feel powerless.Everyone has the potential tocreate change.  However smallor large. Here is a good articleto discuss.

 LOVING STARS CLASS

I n a u g u r a l K i n d e r g a r t e n c l a s s

Golestan is an International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate

school and follows the IB Primary Years Program (PYP)

Standards for Kindergarten. The PYP is a transdisciplinary

program with six defined subject areas:

1. Mathematics,

2. Language(s),

3. Social studies,

4. Science,

5. Physical education, &

6. Arts

Students become aware of the links across the

curriculum and understand the interconnected nature of

the various subjects, both with one another and within

the transdisciplinary themes.

November through January, After having completed

their first IB Unit of Inquiry of "Who We Are," Kindergarten

students will focus on the next Unit of Inquiry of "How we

express ourselves."

This is an inquiry into the ways in which we discover and

express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and

values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy

our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Students explore how the celebration and traditions are

expressions of shared beliefs and values and inquire

about the following:

• Why people celebrate

• Features of traditions and celebrations

• Symbolic representations of celebrations and

traditions

• What meaning people assign to celebrations and

traditions

• The role of gravity and motion in our winter

traditions
