CHALLENGE:

Hangzhou is showing the way to China’s new economy. A booming high-tech and software sector has fired up the local economy despite the nationwide slowdown in recent years. Hangzhou is a city of nearly 7 million people just an hour’s train ride from Shanghai where local authorities have long allowed private enterprise to flourish. It is the birthplace of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, which earns annual revenues of over $12 million dollars and hires tens of thousands of people every year.

The program Is a response to the economic boom that Hangzhou is currently undergoing. Overseas Chinese Town (OCT) Developer wants to transform the city to an International Business and Community Center that would help it transcend to the ranks of other first-tier cities in China like Beijing and Shanghai. The challenge consists of developing a master plan for two subway stations along a proposed 9-station subway line in the River Bay Region of Hangzhou. The district on 5Bao station would become a new International Business Center for the world and 7Bao the International Community Center of the future.

STRATEGY:

5Bao and 7Bao were envisioned to become the foundation for the city’s image and growing enterprises. Because of this, they play a vital role in leading Hangzhou’s development in the River Bay Region. CallisonRTKL saw this challenge as an opportunity to reach beyond the lines of the program of designing a development around two subway stations. We created two Transit Hubs with ultra-integrated systems of connections at the heart of each master plan. The Transit Hubs maximize public transportation by providing access to their surrounding development through many options including subway, bus, monorail, and vertical take-off and landing aircrafts (VTOL). They also allow the residents and visitors for hyper-efficient navigation through the site by providing many different levels including basement for automobile parking or bus stations, subway concourse levels, street pedestrian levels, sky-bridges to important connections or direct terrace level access to others. Their design allows for an all-weather, ground-air integrated ultra-efficient transportation, leading the revolution for future urban transportation systems.

RESULTS/IMPACT:

The Transit Hubs will create a new age of urban lifestyle that is more convenient, sustainable, enjoyable, and efficient. The 5Bao Transit Hub Station and Development will transform Hangzhou into a globally connected city and leader of international business, information, culture, and technology. The 7Bao Transit Hub Station and Development will transform Hangzhou into an unprecedented International Community that offers its residents and visitors an elevated life of Live/Work/Play.

The 5-Bao & 7-Bao Transit Hub Stations are part of two TOD mixed-use complexes and serve as urban nodes along a 9-station subway line. Being the foundation for the city’s image and growing enterprises, they play a vital role in leading Hangzhou’s development in the River Bay Region.

5-Bao & 7-Bao Transit Hubs create a system of integrated connections to their surrounding development. Planned with the concept of the “Hub of the Future”, 5-Bao and 7-Bao combine transportation methods of the present with those in the near future. They allow for an all-weather, ground-air integrated ultra-efficient transportation, leading the revolution for future urban transportation systems.
