DAIRY FARMERS!
Chris HeimThe Heim familyLewiston, Minn. Winona County 330 cowsWhen did you host your June Dairy Month event and what type of event was it? How many peo-ple attended? We hosted a dairy night on the farm on June 22 put on by the Winona Chamber of Commerce. About 1,300
people were served a meal, but we are guessing some people didnt eat so the total number of people who attended the event was more than likely higher than that. The meal was pulled pork with baked beans, and chocolate and white milk. Why did you host? They asked us, and we thought it would be fun and educational. What is the process of preparing to host this event? We had a meeting once a month for a year before the event. The last month we had a meeting once a week. Right before the night on the farm, we got the farm looking nice and clean. Its clean most of the time anyway, but theres always something to pick up. We lled in the pot holes in the driveway and removed the cement blocks where the silos were. We did extra cleaning and washed the oor of the shop where the food was served. What was the highlight of the day? Just having all the people here. The hayrides were a big hit. It was great to see the day come together after all the work and effort from the people who planned it. Along with our family, the people from the chamber and a lot of volunteers helped make it happen. There were lots of volunteers who helped us that night. They parked cars, drove people in from their cars, cleaned tables after people ate and helped families carry their plates to the tables. The Lewiston FFA Chapter also had a petting zoo. People were able to walk into the parlor to see where we milk. We werent milking the cows while people were here (because it wasnt milking time) but we had a TV with a video of milking play-ing in the shed where people ate. There was always a crowd of people around it watching. What was your favorite aspect of your dairy event?I liked that we were able to show people about the farm and educate them about where their milk comes from. Farming is a big part of Winona County, so it was good to show that to people. It was also fun to see all the vendors who came. There were three equip-ment dealers, one dairy equipment company and our nutritionist here to show people their part of farming.Tell us about your farm. I am the fourth generation here. The farm started in 1941. My wife, Amanda, and I farm together with my parents, Bruce and Jodi. We have 16 employees who help us get the chores done and milk our 330 cows three times a day. We milk at 3:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. in a double-6 step-up parlor. About 240 of our cows are housed in a sand bedded freestall barn while the rest are in a compost barn. We farm 400 acres of corn and alfalfa.
Why did you host a June
Dairy Month event?

In Minnesota, Gopher State farmers were paid an average of $15.70 for their March milk. That was down 22 cents from February, and down $1.62 from March of 2015. The change from February to March in Minnesota was the smallest decrease just 22 cents. In Iowa, Hawkeye State dairy farmers received a mailbox average of $15.31. That was down 28 cents from February, and down $1.43 from a year earlier. Once again, the highest mailbox price went to farmers in the New England States Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. There, it came in at

$16.36, down 70 cents from February. Florida farmers were paid the second-highest price: $15.68. That Sunshine State average was down 81 cents from a month earlier. Then came Ohio, at $15.18, down from
$15.56 a month earlier. In New York, Empire State farmers were paid an average of $15.08 for their March milk. That was down from $15.72 in February. Hoosier State farmers got $14.61 as a mailbox average in March. A month earlier, the Indiana average price was $15.13. One state north, Michigan producers were paid an average of $13.51 for their March milk. That was down from $14.17. Dairy producers in southern Missouri received $14.46 in March,

The Corn Belt States Kansas,Nebraska and northern Missouri averaged $14.25, down from $14.66. Dairy farmers in the Northwest States Oregon and Washington got anaverage of $14.56. That was down from$14.81 in February.Moving down to western Texas, the March mailbox price averaged $14.27, down 45 cents. The lowest price amongthe federal milk marketing ordersonce again was paid in the Land ofEnchantment. Farmers in New Mexico received an average price of $13.48 inMarch, down from $13.96 the monthbefore. California, not a part of the federalmilk order system, saw a March averageof $13.61. That was down from $13.99 in February. This past March, the U.S. averagebutterfat test was 3.80 percent, while theaverage protein test was 3.13 percent.Other solids in the milk averaged 5.75 percent. Mailbox prices are the actual, netamounts farmers see on the checks intheir mailboxes. The AMS collectsthese prices through its federal milkorder market administrator of ces.Mailbox prices include all payments farmers got for milk they sold. These prices also re ect all deductions associated with marketingthat milk. Theres no adjustment to 3.5percent butterfat, so mailbox prices re ect the actual test of the milk.
March mailbox prices averaged 52 cents lowerWisconsin at $15.68, Minnesota $15.70, Iowa $15.31
