Renew My Church: The San Damiano Cross Keeps Our Focus

A while back, I shared the story of St. Francis hearing Jesus call to him from the San Damiano cross. Praying before this icon of our Lord, St. Francis of Assisi heard Jesus call to him: “Go repair my Church, which, as you see, is falling completely into ruin.” At first, St. Francis initially took this to mean he was to repair the church buildings of San Damiano. However, he eventually discerned that Jesus was calling him to rebuild the spiritual life and vitality of the entire earthly Church. Likewise, we must see that the future of the Catholic Church is bigger than any of our parish buildings. This icon of Jesus helps us remain focused on three very important realities as we renew our faith lives, parishes and the archdiocese: 1. It portrays Jesus speaking to us even though he is dying, which serves as a reminder that we need not be afraid to take up this work even if it costs us something, for Jesus is with us always. 2. Jesus is surrounded by others, highlighting the fact that, as we take up the challenge of renewal, our unity should not be diminished but strengthened. 3. Jesus is also featured as the Risen One at the top of the cross – a sign of hope to us that in this renewal, which will require us to die to ourselves and familiar patterns, Jesus is offering us new life and vitality for the future. Reading the scenarios, it is important to distinguish between the words parish andchurch.

Parish = The People, Community, Organization

Church = Building; the sacred space in which we worship

A united parish has one pastor, budget, staff, Finance Council, etc. – but may have multiple churches. The assets of each parish uniting as one parish become the assets of the united parish.

A united parish may take the form of a new parish with a new name (Parish A and Parish B form New Parish C) or Parish B becoming part of Parish A. In either case, the church buildings retain their names. So Church B would still be Church B even if it becomes part of Parish A.

When a parish would have two churches, one of the churches would be designated as the parish church where the sacramental records would be kept.

As we review the scenarios, it is important for all us to do so prayerfully keeping in mind that the spiritual and structural renewal to which we are called to foster are connected. The best and most effective and efficient stewardship of our resources (structural renewal) can allow us to invest more into the ministries that directly work toward making disciples, building community and inspiring witness (spiritual renewal).

Just as Jesus asks us to pray always, He also invites us to trust always. Together, we pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to determine how Our Lord will use existing structures to create new ones that bring more people into relationship with Him.

We are asked to provide feedback on the initial scenarios from the Archdiocese and propose alternative scenarios and configuration models.

Initial Parish Scenarios for Discernment

Please note schools are not explicitly addressed in these scenarios. To the extent schools remain financially sustainable, St. Linus School will be the parish school of whichever configuration St. Linus Parish joins, and St. Patricia School will be the parish school of whichever configuration St. Patricia Parish joins.

Scenario 1: 1 parish, 4 churches

All four parishes unite to form a new united parish, continuing to use all four campuses. (5,862 avg. weekend Mass attendance; $3.5 million operating revenue)

Sacred Heart would serve as the central location for the united parish and formally be designated the parish church.

School governance would need to be explored in this scenario as having two parish governed schools within one parish can be challenging.

Scenario 2: 2 parishes, 4 churches

Parish 1: St. Linus and Our Lady of the Ridge unite to form one parish. Both churches continue to hold a regular Mass schedule within the united parish. (2,112; $1.63 million)

Parish 2: St. Patricia and Sacred Heart unite to form one parish. Both churches continue to hold a regular Mass schedule within the united parish. (3,750; $1.89 million)

Scenario 3: 3 parishes, 4 churches

Inicjatywa Odnów mój Kościół:

Krzyż z San Damiano pomaga zachować koncentrację

Jakiś czas temu przywołałem historię św. Franciszka, który usłyszał, jak Jezus zawołał do niego z krzyża w San Damiano. Modląc się przed tą ikoną naszego Pana, św. Franciszek z Asyżu usłyszał wezwanie Jezusa: „Idź naprawić mój Kościół, który, jak widzisz, całkowicie popada w ruinę”. Początkowo św. Franciszek myślał, że ma naprawić budynki kościelne San Damiano. Dane parafialne będą musiały być zestawione z Podstawowymi Zasadami, biorąc pod uwagę dane z przed COVID-19 (tj. sytuację finansową roku podatkowego 2019 oraz uczestnictwo we mszach św. w październiku 2019), oraz to w jaki sposób COVID-19 wpłynął na zrównoważony rozwój finansowy każdej parafii i potencjalny scenariusz. Sacred Heart Thanks Dr. Willie Wilson

In 1 Thessalonians we read:

“You became imitators of the Lord, so that you became a model for all believers”.

Dr. Willie Wilson is such a model, reaching out to churches of all denominations to help offset their financial burdens caused by the Corona Virus pandemic.

On November 1st, Dr. Wilson visited Sacred Heart, at a special mass organized by the Polish Highlanders Alliance of North America, and gifted us with a generous check for $50,000. This money will be used to ease the Sunday collection deficit.

Our thanks and prayers go out to Dr. Willie Wilson and his ministry to help churches remain open, so that people can still come together to worship God.

THE SHEPHERD KING The job of shepherd and the job of king couldn’t be more different from each other. Shepherds are on the lowest rung of society, kings are at the top. But God says, through the prophet Ezekiel, that the Messiah will lead in a way very different from earthly authorities who lord it over their people and cause harm with their poor leadership. Our King takes on the job himself. Christ, like a shepherd, will give rest, seek out the lost, bring back the strayed and scattered ones. He will heal the wounded and bind up the injured. The Knights of Columbus will be selling Oplatki (Christmas Wafers) after all weekend masses on November 21-22 and again November 28-29...or until supplies run out. The Oplatki were personally blessed by Fr. Jacek during the Knights of Columbus council meeting on November 11. Net proceeds will go to support the important work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The tradition of the Oplatki originated in Poland around the 17th century. The word Oplatki means “Angel Bread.” The significance of the Oplatki is that it mirrors the Eucharistic meal. Just as we share the Eucharist as one family in Christ during Mass, the Oplatki allow one’s immediate family to come together and share the love they have for one another. Dear Parishioners, Thank you for your generous support for our Split the Pot fundraising efforts. We are seeing more support of this effort as the weeks roll on. However, it is becoming more difficult every week to keep track of donations. Many of you are sending one check in and asking us to spread the Split the Pot donations over several future weeks’ drawings. Other times the instructions are not specific enough and we have to track down your intentions. Since the winner must give to Split the Pot and make a regular donation to qualify to win, it is imperative that we are able to determine this at the time of the drawing. We are also receiving entries through the post office, sometimes these are late entries that do not qualify because we have drawn the number before receiving the envelopes. . We are doing our best and are committed to being transparent. These exceptions are causing problems, so, if at all possible please send in one envelope and one check (cash) specifically for Split the Pot in the week it is drawn. 1. Only registered parishioners are eligible to win this weekly drawing. If you are not registered with our parish, please come to our administrative office and we will be happy to register you into Sacred Heart Parish. 2. You must play to win. In addition to your regular weekly offering of at least five dollars, the cost of a split the pot entry for any given week’s drawing is also five dollars. (There are separate envelopes for split the pot). All monies for split the pot will be set aside until there is a winner. 3. There may not be a winner every week. Each week, a name is drawn from our entire, (whether they participate in the split the pot or not) parishioner file. If the name drawn participated in that week’s split the pot drawing, they will win the split the pot prize. 4. If the name drawn from our entire parishioner file did not participate in split the pot that week, the money will be rolled over to increase the next week’s jackpot.

our service to the parish is greatly appreciated As we end the current liturgical year and begin the new church year with Advent starting at the end of the month, new lector workbooks for 2021 are here. If you have not yet picked up a new book, a new book with your name on it can be found in the ministers’ room.
