2 6920 Communications Server Installation Guide

IntroductionThe Communications Server by Intermec Technologies Corporation is acommunications server that uses computing platforms and operating sys-tems that are already part of the enterprise. We provide a gateway with theability to manage and monitor remote users from the server.

Administrators can use the Graphic User Interface (GUI) to monitor thesystem status and users’ progress. Standard windows show the daily datacollection activities, all system communications ports, and any associatedprograms that may be running, such as formatters.

Several protocols can be used on the same server. For example, the systemmay be configured with ports to simultaneously communicate on a 10Mbps Ethernet line using TCP/IP, a 115.2 kbps RS-485 line using No-randR Portable Communications Protocol (NPCP), and a modem line at28.8 Kbps using TTY protocol. A combination of several different types ofcomputers could communicate with the Communications Server at thesame time.

You can choose your hardware and operating system. The system is decou-pled from a monolithic system that required a fixed package of operatingsystem, communications board, and network. Layouts and interfaces arethe same for all server versions.

S An Application Programming Interface (API) is available for customersand VARs, who wish to create their own interface, instead of the stan-dard GUI.

S The communications engine is separated from the hardware, permittingcustomers to choose single or multiport, RS-232, RS-485, or Ethernethardware.

S One protocol is supported by one port; multiple protocols can be sup-ported over multiple ports — however, one port cannot support multi-ple protocols at the same time. Use modems at the same time asRS-232, RS-485, and Ethernet connections.

System Set UpBefore installing the Communications Server, set up the location and ac-quire required hardware with sufficient memory for the server. Memoryrequirements are based on the size of the system, how many computers arecommunicating, and what protocols are used for communications. Inter-net Protocol (IP) addresses are required for computers using TCP/IP, theserver, and for the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) beforetransactions can occur between the computers and the server.

36920 Communications Server Installation Guide

Choosing an Operating SystemThe Communications Server functions on a Windows NT, Windows2000, Windows XP, Windows NT Version 4.0 server or workstation withService Pack 3 applied; or Windows 95 (98) with Service Pack 2 (OSR2)applied. Contact your Intermec representative for more information about theseand other operating systems.

Planning the SiteExamine the possible location for the Communications Server. Determineif required equipment and services are easily available, serviceable, and se-cure in that area. Consider these questions when choosing a site for theserver.

Site ConsiderationsSubject Questions to Ask

Physical Security S Is the server physically isolated from individuals who might tamper with its data or equip-ment?S Can anyone access an active server to view or alter its operation?

Physical Integrity S Is the server located where its power, data, or systems could be disturbed?S Are power and reset switches protected against inadvertent use?S Is there enough circulation around the server and in the room to prevent overheating of thecomputer, modems, and other equipment?

Accessibility S Can the server be easily accessed to service its hardware?S Are the network and phone service positioned nearby to minimize RF interference?

Scalability S Is there enough ventilation, phone lines, network resources, physical space, and power outletsin the event that modems, routers, or additional servers need to be added after the pilot phasewhen communication needs increase?

Demand S Are there enough modems or network connections to service all clients in a timely manner?S Are spares available if a piece of equipment becomes disabled?

Cabling S Are all serial, network, and data cables shielded from defects?S Are cables as short as possible to minimize interference?

Fault Tolerance S Is an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) added to the system design?S Does its rating include running the server, monitor, modems, and network long enough toshut down the system?S Are there spares of all equipment, including the server, its hard drives, and the network? SeeNote 1.S Is a scheduled server downtime built in for maintenance tasks such as upgrades, diagnostics, and system backups? See Note 2.

Note 1: If it is important to maintain phone access, consider multiple telecommunications carriers for the server’s modemlines. Plan for the server and each client to use these carriers as primary, secondary resources.

Note 2: A periodic backup of the server and data drive is important to perform on an inactive server. Consider restoringthe backup on another host computer to check the integrity of the backup.

Hand-Held and Mobile ComputersThe Communications Server supports the 4000 and 6000 Series Hand-Held Computers, 600 and 700 Series Mobile Computers.

Host ComputerIf the PC interfaces to a host computer, such as a mid-range or a main-frame, the PC needs the hardware boards suggested by the host computermanufacturer.

ModemsFull-duplex modems certified by Intermec Technologies Corporation aresupported, including Microcom 28.8 and Motorola 14.4 and 28.8. OtherHayes command-set compatible modems may be used but software sup-port is not available for them. Modems are not included with the Commu-nications Server.Modems must first be installed and configured through the WindowsControl Panel and dedicated to the Communications Server system. Themodems must be configured for proper settings, such as speed, parity, anddata bits. Then, the Communications Server must be configured to use themodem through Communications Properties.

PCUse a server-class machine, such as a Pentium with a minimum 133 MHzclock, to house the Communications Server software.

Hard Drive SizeAt least 3 MB of storage is required for the Communications Server ap-plication software. This does not include space for upload and downloadfiles, which need a minimum of twice the combined space of temporaryand processed files. The amount of storage required for upload and down-load varies, and depends on customer requirements.

RAM RequirementsIntermec Technologies Corporation recommends the minimum amountof RAM based on the operating system and the number of configuredports or simultaneous communication sessions. Some PCs may require alarger amount of RAM based on other applications the server is running.Contact your Intermec representative for more information.

TCP/IP Using NRInetNRInet protocol is a communication protocol that functions on a custom-er’s corporate or locally-connected TCP/IP network. NORUTILs, pro-vided in the computer’s flash or operating system, supports NRInet. NRI-net loads the application and transmits upload and download data. Locallyconnected is supported on Intermec mobile computers.

The TCP/IP stack from FTP Software, Inc. is embedded in the computerflash. Any other protocol stack requires custom systems integration for afee.

PPP/SLIP ProtocolUse NRInet in a dial-up connection over a PPP connection to TCP/IPnetwork. Do this through a Windows NT RAS connection or anotherdial-up connection (modem pool) to a customer’s corporate backbone.

6920 Communications ClientNote: This applies to Windows 95, 98, NT, 2.12, 3.0, and PocketPC.Contact your Intermec representative about any other operating systems.

A Windows 32-bit application using NRInet to function on a TCP/IP net-work is available via Intermec Technologies.

The 6920 Communications Client application works with the 6920 Com-munications Server to load the mobile computer application and transmit-ting upload and download data with the server. Contact your Intermecrepresentative about this application.

TTY ProtocolTTY is an asynchronous protocol used over phone lines. The Commu-nications Server supports 7- or 8-bit data with or without parity checking.TTY is used with 4000 and 6000 Series Computers for single computercommunications for modem configurations. 1K TTY clients are autode-tected by the server. This enhanced client can cut flow time by as much asa third.

Ymodem ProtocolYmodem boots single remote 4000 Series Computers. Each time a 4000Series Computer is powered up, Ymodem downloads an operating systemand program to that computer. A single file containing the 4000 Seriesapplication and operating system is placed into the boot directory.

498x ProtocolThe 498x protocol communicates to local 4980 or 4985 CommunicationsControllers. Once a 4980 Controller is configured, the local controller cancommunicate to either remote 4980 or 4985 Controllers.

698x ProtocolThe 698x protocol communicates to local 6980 Series Network Managers.Once a 6980 Network Manager is configured, the local network managercan communicate to either remote 6980 or 6985 Network Managers.

IFTPThe Intermec File Transfer Protocol (IFTP) communicates to local or re-mote client computers that have the IFTP server installed. Once a clientcomputer is configured, the local network manager can detect and processfiles to be exchanged over a TCP/IP connection.

IP AddressesWhen in a TCP/IP network, allocate IP addresses to the 6920 Commu-nications Server and mobile computers.

Server IP AddressThe 6920 Communications Server must be configured with an IP addressusing the Network Operating System procedures. Each client uses this IPaddress to contact the system for application booting and data communica-tions.

Alternatively, if the Domain Name Server (DNS) is supported on yournetwork, the 6920 Communications Server can be accessed through itsname.

Client IP AddressEach mobile computer needs a unique IP address to communicate like acomputer workstation. This IP address may be assigned either statically ordynamically.

Static IP addressing is used when an IP address is assigned to each comput-er. The IP address resides within the hand-held computer until the IP ad-dress is removed from operation or the network IP address is changed.

Dynamic IP address allocation is done using Dynamic Host ConfigurationProtocol (DHCP). Intermec mobile computers support DHCP from thecomputer flash to dynamically assign IP addresses to Intermec computersduring communication sessions.

NPCP ConfigurationsThe following NPCP configurations use the RS-232 to RS-485 ConverterBox. The first and second ports (Ports 0,1) can be configured for theRS-485 without an RS-232 to 485 Converter Box. Use the RocketPort485 to Dock or 4970P Cable (P/N: 226-337-00X).

Note: The ComTrol RocketPort device is an 8-port multiport RS-232 se-rial port.

Note: In newer versions, default levels are set at “3.” For troubleshooting, set the levels to “5,” then do individual process log levels.

The higher the level number, the more information gets logged, thusslowing the Communications Server. For TTY and NRInet protocols, set levels to “0” or “1” for maximum efficiency.

When testing clients, set levels at “0” to run “TEST6920API”(6920API.DLL) to catch the thread for logging messages. See the 6920Communications Server Reference Manual (P/N: 977-021-001) for infor-mation about this test application.

Logging level messages (fatal, error, warning, information) always ap-pear in the 6920 Event Log. Debug messages are mixed in with otherlogging messages. See the “6920 Communications Server User’s Guide“for information.

S NRInet

Types range from fatal errors (0) to informational messages (5). Fatalerrors are always written to the database, regardless of the type of messageselected.

Logging level messages (fatal, error, warning, information) always appearin the 6920 Event Log. Debug messages are mixed in with other loggingmessages. See the “6920 Communications Server User’s Guide“ for informa-tion.
