The holiday season is a time rich with traditions, and you each

have our own which make your celebrations more meaningful.

Because we want your celebrations to be safe as well as happy, please remember that at Clearbrook Inn, you are unable to have any fresh trees, wreaths, or boughs in floral arrangements in your apartments, per the Fire

Marshal’s regulation.

Another tradition you may have had in the past is giving gifts to acknowledge your gratitude for

services rendered. Please remember that staff members

may not accept an individual gift, but you may give something that can be shared with all the staff.

The Choral Belles These lovely ladies from Port Ludlow delight us with their sweet voices a few times each

year; they sang for Clearbrook Inn and Country Meadows in November and will be

back on December 6th to perform their Christmas Concert—lucky us!

Here at Encore Communities, there are so many people who work together to ensure that everyone has all the comforts of home without the responsibilities. Maintenance keeps our grounds beautifully; they make repairs and keep the pool ready for your weekly exercise or PT. The nurses and therapists give the very best tender loving care to get patients home safely. The Activity department aspires to make life a daily celebration, bringing smiles to all. Our dietary department provides nutritious meals and the most amazing cookies on the planet, which definitely increases quality of life! But there is a team of people on our campuses who work tirelessly to ensure your comfort and quality of life, and they are rarely noticed; they work quietly behind the scenes to take care of your needs.

Our Housekeeping staff, led by the capable and creative Juliet Magdaleno, do so much more than clean our living spaces! Juliet & Maggie do all the planting that beautifies our campus. That keeps them busy most of

the year! Then we have Christmas: and the Housekeeping Elves come out and put up the most beautiful decorations in all our buildings, making the holidays merrier! In a rare moment of repose, these House-keeping Elf-Angels agreed to have their picture taken; sweet faces, hard workers, and we are so grateful for all of them!

Resident of the month

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Perfect happiness for me is when I am at peace with myself, knowing that I can relax and enjoylife because I rest in my faith in Jesus. He gives me happiness even in the

tough times.

What is your most treasured possession?

Though they are not possessions, I treasure my two children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Their love is my

most treasured possession.

If you could have dinner with anyone from the past or present, who

would it be? I think I would like to have dinner with the Rev. Dr. Billy Graham. I received Jesus in my heart during one of his crusades. I was sixteen years old at the time. I would like to

thank him personally. I have always respected him for he is a man of integrity.

What is your favorite journey?

My favorite journey happens each Sunday morning as I travel from home to worship

in our local church. Travel wise, my favorite journey has been to the Philippines, sixteen times. A recent Danube River Cruise would

come in as a close second.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I had the privilege of being the drum major for our high school marching band and led the band in four successive Portland, OR

Rose Festival parades, winning the marching band competition every year.

In your lifetime what changes have

come about that you like?

Communication. I never had a phone in my

home until I graduated from high school,

married and established my own home. The

cell phone and instant communication is a

modern-day miracle, and texting is a great

way (and usually the only way) to stay in

touch with family.

Larry was born into a migrant worker family,

the last of eleven children.—five brothers and five sisters. He and his wife, Audrey, were married two weeks after graduation

from high school. At nineteen, he was appointed as a student lay pastor to a local

Methodist church in SE Portland and has been in pastoral and evangelistic ministry for 65 years. Larry has served churches in

Oregon, Illinois, Southern California, Idaho and Washington. For the past 35 years, he

and his wife were involved in conducting training and equipping events for local churches and conferences. They have

travelled in twelve countries and 46 of the 50 states. Larry retired in 1997, but continues in

ministry as the opportunity arises.

Note the location of the comma: the original intent of this beloved Christmas carol was to encourage people to rest (to keep, to cause to continue to re-main) “merry;” the meaning had a wider sense of pleasantness, bounty, prosperity as well as cheerfulness. “Let nothing you dismay…” The hope of Christmas was all the reason they needed to share tidings of comfort and joy! These people in the 1800’s knew something of the secret to good health: there is a direct relationship between the condition of the heart and the condition of the body. Happy people take better care of themselves, are more active, eat healthier, sleep better and give of their time to benefit

others. Norman Cousins wrote that your mental attitude has a great deal to do with whether you get sick and how quickly you get well. So here’s a checklist of good ideas on how to rest yourselves merry this season:

Cultivate a forgiving spirit

Keep the long view of life

Associate with cheerful people

Be a load lifter, not a burden maker

Listen to good music

Live a life of active love; get involved in the lives of other people.
