LOCALIZATION
GEOTHERMAL WATER IN MARGHITA
Water is an important local resource. Mainly the Barcău river, which on its way to
the Danube, crosses the Hungarian twin town Berettyóújfalu.
The most important resource is the geothermal water, a treasure of the
Western Field, also exploited in Marghita.
Without getting into to many details, we will enumerate some of the most
important features of the geothermal deposits of this area: Number of active extraction wells: 3 Surface water temperature: between 62 and 70 degrees Celsius Drilling Depth: between 980 and 1480 m. Chemical composition: the waters are rich in salts and minerals,
chlorine, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and iron. Therapeutic indications: locomotor disabilities, spine, gynaecological
and rheumatic diseases, physical and intellectual exhaustion.
In Marghita, there is an exploitation of this resource,
dating back to the seventies, when the first swimming pools
were built. Afterwards, they got extended. There was another
pool built for the children, a hotel with restaurant, and a
complex of cottages, able to host foreign tourists during the
summertime.
At the same time a bathing physiotherapy and physical-medical rehabilitation ward was built in the hospital. Unfortunately, these buildings have not developed ever since the 80`s.
On the other hand, the perspective of Romania joining the European Union has given us the opportunity of putting this resource to good use.
All local administrations were a ware of the role the balneary tourism could play in the development of this town, thus making it their number one priority.
In 2005 after joining two other towns, a project untitled “Balneary Park in the North- West Region – locations Tăşnad, Beltiug and Marghita” was put together, financed by PHARE Program.
This was the beginning of a new amusement area, whose centerpiece will
be the geothermal water.
At present, the project is finished and the following issues have been
accomplished: 2 swimming pools, dressing rooms, parking lots and other
utilities. The appliance of parks, alleys and other facilities is coming next.
The intention of the local authorities is to attract investors to continue local
investments. The town hall, will initiate a public tender to rent the lots
around the Balneary Park and the investors will have to follow the town
planning issued for the area. This planning stipulates the building of new
swimming pools, sport grounds, lodging, malls, restaurants.
Even during the crisis, when the rhythm of investments is low, the town hall
hopes to succeed in attracting companies interested in balneary tourism,
that can benefit from financial and technical facilities.

At the same time, the bathing physiotherapy and physical-medical rehabilitation department is being modernized.
Another perspective of the geothermal water’s utility is its energetic potential. Thus the town hall has conceived a project through which the school and hospital of Marghita can use this water as their main heating source.
A result of the awkward usage of this resource is the constitution of the Romanian Water Cluster which the town hall of Marghita is part of. The purpose of this structure is to unite forces to exploit Romanian waters and attract founds to finance this type of projects.
