Sermon Outline

Ezra 7:6-7 (NLT), “This Ezra was a scribe who was well versed in the Law of Moses, which the Lord, the God of Israel, had given to the people of Israel. He came up to Jerusalem from Babylon, and the king gave him everything he asked for, because the gracious hand of the Lord his God was on him. Some of the people of Israel, as well as some of the priests, Le-vites, singers, gatekeepers, and Temple servants, traveled up to Jerusalem with him in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes’ reign.” Ezra 9:6 (NCV), “My God, I am too ashamed and embarrassed to lift up my face to you, my God, because our sins are so many. They are higher than our heads. Our guilt even reaches up to the sky.” Ezra 9:15 (CEV), “Lord God of Israel, you have been more than fair by letting a few of us survive. But once again, our sins have made us ashamed to face you.” Nehemiah 1:4-7 (MSG), “When I heard this, I sat down and wept. I mourned for days, fasting and praying before the God-of-Heaven. I said, ‘God, God-of-Heaven, the great and awe-some God, loyal to his covenant and faithful to those who love him and obey his commands: Look at me, listen to me. Pay attention to this prayer of your servant that I’m praying day and night in intercession for your servants, the People of Israel, confessing the sins of the People of Israel. And I’m including myself, I and my ancestors, among those who have sinned against you. We’ve treated you like dirt: We haven’t done what you told us, haven’t followed your commands, and haven’t respected the decisions you gave to Moses your servant.’” Nehemiah 4:1-3 (NCV), “When Sanballat heard we were rebuilding the wall, he was very angry, even furious. He made fun of the Jewish people. He said to his friends and those with power in Samaria, ‘What are these weak Jews doing? Will they rebuild the wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Can they finish it in one day? Can they bring stones back to life from piles of trash and ashes?’ Tobiah the Ammonite, who was next to Sanballat, said, ‘If a fox climbed up on the stone wall they are building, it would break it down.’” Nehemiah 4:10, “The people of Judah said, ‘The workers are getting tired. There is so much trash we cannot rebuild the wall.’”

Sermon Notes

Nehemiah 4:13-14, “So I put people behind the lowest places along the wall—the open plac-es—and I put families together with their swords, spears, and bows. Then I looked around and stood up and said to the important men, the leaders, and the rest of the people: ‘Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and powerful. Fight for your brothers, your sons and daughters, your wives, and your homes.’” Nehemiah 6:15-16 (CEV), “On the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, the wall was completely rebuilt. It had taken fifty-two days. When our enemies in the surrounding nations learned that the work was finished, they felt helpless, because they knew that our God had helped us re-build the wall.” Observation #1: Their stories were marked by prayer Ezra 9:5 (CEV), “At the time of the evening sacrifice, I was still sitting there in sorrow with my clothes all torn. So I got down on my knees, then lifted my arms, and prayed…” Nehemiah 1:4 (MSG), “When I heard this, I sat down and wept. I mourned for days, fasting and praying before the God-of-Heaven.” Matthew 5:10-12 (NLT), “God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the King-dom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.” 1 Peter 4:12-13 (NCV), “My friends, do not be surprised at the terrible trouble which now comes to test you. Do not think that something strange is happening to you. But be happy that you are sharing in Christ’s sufferings so that you will be happy and full of joy when Christ comes again in glory.” Observation #2: Their stories were marked by repentance Simon Mbevi, “You know, we have this tendency; in our quiet time or when we talk to God in our prayers; we talk so much about the things that we want, that we have very little time, if any, to spend on repentance.” “The height of your spiritual revival will be determined by the depth of your personal repent-ance.” Reflection…

LABELS FOR EDUCATION - MOUNTAIN MISSION SCHOOL Please save the UPC code/lids from the products listed in the flyer on the shelf in the mailroom. Also save the “Box Tops for Educa-tion” coupons on various products, including Kleenex tissues, cake mixes, and frozen products. Place them in the box also provided on the shelf in the mailroom. They will be sent to the Mountain Mission School in Grundy, Virginia. These labels are greatly appreciated by them as they can use them to get a variety of different supplies & equipment that the school couldn’t get otherwise! One thing to keep in mind - don’t hold onto your “Box Tops” too long - they do expire and they can’t use them if the date on them is past.

JOURNEY MEALS TO GO Just had a baby? Need Food? We're here for you. Surgery, Illness? We've got you covered.... We are your Church Family! Contact Lisa Steedsman or Abby Bulliner at [email protected] and we will start a mealtrain for you. A mealtrain is the act of organizing meal giving around significant life events. We will need some information such as your address, when you need the meals to start, and any allergies that you or your family may have.

Enjoy blessing others with food? We're looking for you, too! It is a win-win. You feel great, and the recipient loves you! Ask Lisa. You can also buy them pizza or takeout if you don't have the time to cook:) They will still love you. Trust us. Please let Lisa or Abby know if you'd be interested in this ministry and we will add you to our database of volunteers. You will then receive an email when there is a need and can sign up to deliver at your convenience! Our goal is to provide 5 meals for each significant event.

As part of our continuing efforts to recycle here at the Journey, there is a recycling container in the worship center! All of the plastic cups that we use need to be put in there so that we can send them to the recycling cen-ter. Please make sure that your container is empty before putting it in the container. We appreciate your help in making this happen.
