We are widening and upgrading this section of road to build a better street that is safe, efficient and welcoming no matter how you choose to get around.

What’s Happening Today?

64 Avenue is a busy transportation corridor and an important connector in, and between, communities. But traffic can be a challenge, and the street can be uninviting for people walking, rolling, taking transit and cycling.

We’re aiming to build streets that move more people. Arterials, like 64 Avenue, are planned to have travel lanes to meet anticipated demand, landscaped center medians, paving for cyclists, sidewalks for pedestrians, boulevards with street trees and streetlighting.

Part of the Major Road Network, 64 Avenue is a main road through the city, an important route for emergency vehicles and is served by multiple transit routes, with service to increase to Frequent Transit Network levels.

Project OverviewThe City is planning to widen 64 Avenue, between 184 Street and Fraser Highway, to two lanes in each direction with additional improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users. There will be no provision for on-street parking. Upgrading this important east-west link supports trip safety and reliability for all road users. It's part of a multi-phase program of widening and providing multimodal infrastructure along the entire 64 Avenue corridor.

Road Safety

The City has adopted Vision Zero Surrey and is committed to working towards its vision of safe mobility:

Surrey has Zero people killed and seriously injured on its roads and human life is valued above all else in the transportation network.

Road design and infrastructure included in this Project support this vision through enhanced safety improvements for all road users.

We’ve heard you and we know that phased upgrading of 64 Ave may not be ideal.

64 Avenue is part of the Major Road Network and benefits from TransLink cost-sharing of road, cycling and pedestrian improvement projects. Due to the cost and complexity of the improvements, Surrey’s annual allocated funding will be spent in this 8-block segment.

196 St to Fraser Hwy was completed in 2017, Fraser Hwy to 184 St is next and 184 St to 177 St is planned for 2023.

Looking Ahead: Construction

Traffic Management & Access

A comprehensive traffic management plan will be required to keep area traffic moving safely and efficiently:• Work with traffic experts to plan any detour routes• Coordinate road and driveway closures, while

maintaining resident & business access• Employ traffic controllers during working hours• Coordinate with Coast Mountain Bus Company for

temporary bus stops

Hours of Works & Noise

• Will generally occur during regular business hours but may be extended to maintain schedule

• Will comply with noise bylaw hours (Mon. to Sat. between 7:00am and 10:00pm) or granted bylaw variances

The City will work with its construction contractors to minimize impacts on the community and to ensure public awareness of construction activities and traffic changes.
