November Coffee MorningMongolia: Land of Contrasts

The November coffee morning speaker took us on a pictorial horse trek through Mongolia. Joy Sloan, a rural lass with a love of horses, couldn't turn down the opportunity to horse trek across part of Mongolia. From wide valleys to high mountain passes the scenes Joy showed us were quite breathtaking. Joy and her travelling companions stayed in Yurts or Gers as they are more commonly called in Mongolia as well as camping and once staying in a resort. They visited Ulaanbaatar, a progressive city and were able to note differences in wealth between the city and

the countryside, with most of the investment going into the urban way of life at the expense of those living the more traditional ways.

Joy observed many contrasts in Mongolia, such as between eastern and western lifestyles There was her host who lived in a ger but had a large flatscreen TV and mobile phone. In another place gurds rubbed shoulders with bland modern houses. Fridges were used to store traditional products such as milk.

Some things she saw were disturbing such as the environmentally destructive collection of pine nuts by families who were basically

dumped at the harvesting sites to fend for themselves. Other things were baffling such as the large number of modern buildings in Ulaanbaatar which were left unfinished and/or unoccupied.

Joy hopes to return to Mongolia to see the western side where the nomadic horse culture is stronger.

Joy wet our appetites for such an adventure.

REMEMBER THIS STORY AS YOU LISTEN TO THE PROMISES AND THEN YOU

VOTE

While walking down the street one day a Member of Parliament is tragically hit by a

truck and dies.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

'Welcome to heaven,' says St. Peter.

'Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official

around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you.'

'No problem, just let me in,' says the man.

'Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day

in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.'

'Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the MP.

'I'm sorry, but we have our rules.'

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down down to hell.

When the doors open he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags

as more trash falls from above.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. ' I don't understand,'

stammers the MP.

'Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, danced and had a

great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable.

What happened? '

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, 'Yesterday we were campaigning..

Today you voted.'

Christmas Crackers! What never eats at Christmas dinner? The

turkey – it’s stuffed.

What happened to the thief who stole a Christmas Advent Calendar? He got 25 days!

What says 'Oh Oh Oh'? Santa walking backwards!

What kind of music do elves listen to? Wrap.

Whats the best Christmas Present? A broken drum - you can't beat it.

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he went down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he found himself in

the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians

who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and dressed in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake

his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the

expense of the people.

They played a friendly game of golf and then dined on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly & nice guy who has a good time

dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it,

it's time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and wave whilst the elevator rises....

The elevator rises and the door opens in heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.

'Now it's time to visit heaven.'

So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter

returns.

'Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your

eternity.'

The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: 'Well, I would never have said it

before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.'

with. I have really enjoyed my involvement and have made many good friends in the group. I hope I have also been able to encourage people to go to things like ADFAS, MAMA and Hothouse that they would not normally do.

A Participant

About four years ago we called in at Swanpool to see the BaldArchies exhibition. Luckily we bumped into friends who were with the Arts Appreciation Group from U3A. Enjoyable discussion of the satirical works over lunch led to us joining the group the next year. A catch-up over tea and coffee takes place before each meeting where members talk about events or shows they have seen. We certainly have become more aware of, and attended some of the large range of events, shows and exhibitions that occur on the border. Often groups are organised for a great night or day out.Rod and Lorraine Miller

Another Participant

Lynne and I have been with the group for 5 years and have really enjoyed this friendly group, formerly lead by Barry Pinkerton and more recently by Ian Sutherland. Ian prepares a list of arts events happening locally and further afield which we discuss and enthuse over. Sometimes a member may talk in depth about something they have

Our Featured Class:Arts Appreciation Group

Ian SutherlandI first became involved in U3A through Barry Bennett who was President at the time. Barry was a friend who had been on two trips to Vietnam with me. I found that the Arts Appreciation Group interested me most. It had been started by Barry Pinkerton and had a wide range of activities and a most interesting group of people who quickly became friends. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to share these activities with the group, and to encourage people to take part. When Barry’s health meant that he had to step back I took over as coordinator of the group.

I was born in Sydney in 1944. My father moved to Coonamble when I was 5, then to Armidale where I went to high school and University. Following Uni, I began teaching English/History in Wingham, Kendall then Port Macquarie. The very best part of Kendall was meeting Jan who was teaching in Laurieton. Jan and I married in 1968. We have two great children and six delightful grandchildren, Stuart lives near Maitland, and Kellie at Ballarat. Despite the distance we still make sure we visit them regularly to catch up on their busy lives.

We moved to Albury in 1976 where I was appointed History Head Teacher at Albury High. I stayed in this spot until my retirement in 2004. After children, Jan returned to teaching at Lavington Primary and retired in 2003. In our retirement we have kept quite busy, visiting family, travelling overseas, golf and, for Jan, watercolour painting.

In my teaching career I became involved in the History of Vietnam, and wrote a school text book on the Indo China War. From 1994 I began to take school groups to Vietnam, and later on I organised and led ten adult groups to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

I have always had an interest in art, despite a complete lack of any talent. I also enjoy music and theatre, and Jan shares these interests. Albury is a great place for retirees as there are so many things to go to. With the Arts Appreciation Group there are people to share these activities

6) It is always available as needed.

And then the student was stuck.

Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test, he wrote...

This is straight from Scotland.....

Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam.

The last question was: "Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk."

The question was worth 70 points or none at all.

One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages.

However, he wrote.....

1) It is perfect formula for the child.2 It provides immunity against several diseases.3) It is always the right temperature.4) It is inexpensive.5) It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa.

Seasons Greetings from the U3A committee. We wish you a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Be safe. We look forward to seeing you in February.
