beginsatsundownonMarch11andPassoverbeginsatsundownonApril10.Didyouknow

thatthePassoversederisthemostcelebratedJewisheventoftheyear?Itmakessense.It

includeseatinganddrinkingwithfamilyandfriends,agreatstorywithapowerfulmessageandthepossibilityof

winningaprizeattheend(ifyoufindtheafikomen).Amazingly,Purimalsohasmanyofthesesameelements.In

fact,onPurim,theeatinganddrinkingaresupposedtobeabitmoreexcessivethanonPassover.Thereiseven

thecommandonPurimtogetabitdrunk,tothepoint—astheTalmudinstructs—whenyouarenotabletotell

thedifferencebetweentheevilHamanandtheamazingMordecai.AlsoonPurim,thereisafabulousstorytold

inthemegillahofEsther,whichcontainssomeincrediblyrelevantandmodernmessages.Itbringsupissuesthat

dealwithgenderroles(Estherisaheroineinamale-dominatedsociety),solidaritywiththeJewishpeople

(EstherandMordecairisktheirlivestosavetheJewishpeople)anddealingwithevilpeople(Hamanandhis

familypaytheultimatepricefortheirtreachery).Finally,onPurimyoucanwinaprizeforthebestcostume.(I

Message from the President

Springistheseasonofrebirthandrenewal.Thistimeeveryyear,asthesunbeginstowarmtheearth,thefrozen

groundsoftensandplantscometolife.

So,itistooatTempleJudeatoday.ThankstoournewexclusivecaterersatHassonCatering,ourbuildingis

undergoinganextensiverenovationthathasgeneratedabuzzinthecommunity.Partiesarealreadyfully

bookedforthelatefallasthenewsspreadsaboutoursoon-to-bestunningnewspace.Specialthankstoour

housechair,RichardKashinsky,whohasbeenoverseeingtheconstructionandrenovationprocess.

ThechangesatTempleJudeaarenotjustphysical.Nowthatwelivestreammanyofourservices,peopleare

visitingusvirtually,includingoursnowbirdswhospendtheirwintersinFlorida.SpeakingofFlorida,onMarch22,

wewillbesendingRabbiChizneronamissiontoreconnectwithourcurrentandformermembersinBoynton

Beach,whichwillbehostedbyEstelleLevyandJuditUngar.SpecialthankstoSusanGoldklangformakingthe

reunionhappen.

WehavereimaginedourCaringCommitteeundertheleadershipofDr.MichaelWininger.TempleJudeanow

reachesoutinnew,morepersonalwaystoourmembersintimesofneed.Theresponsefromourmembershas

beenheartwarming.

OnMarch11,ourmembershipchairs,MerylKatzandStaceyWink,willhostWild&Crazy2.0,anadults-only

celebrationofPurim.Thoseofyouwhoattendedtheoriginalwillwanttoknowthatwewillbebringingbackthe

gameshow,thewineand,mostimportantly,thegoodcompany.PleasegetyourRSVPsinsothattheycanmake

arrangementsforfood.

Thisspringwillbeaspecialtimeformyownfamily,aswecelebratetheBatMitzvahofmydaughter,Maya.

Itisanexcitingtimeforallofus,andIamproudtobeapartoftheprocess.

MESSAGE FROM YOUR SISTERHOOD

AsIwritethis,thedaffodilsthatwerepeakingupthroughmymulchedbedsarenowcoveredwithsnow.Bythetimeyoureadthiscolumn,theymaybeinbloom.

ItremindsmeoftheJewishstoriesthatwetellatthistimeofyear.Purim,tome,isastorybehindastory,possiblyhiddenunderthesnow.Obviously,Jewsovercameapoliticalsystemthatwaspoisedtoquashitspeople.Underneath,PurimisaboutastrongwomanwhowasabletouseherheadtocircumventexistentialproblemsfortheJewsofPersia.Similarly,thestoryofPassoveralsofeaturesstrongwomenwhowereabletosavetheirpeople(castingMosesintotheriverasababy,“finding”himforthePharoah’sdaughterandraisinghimasawetnurse)bytheirbehindthescenesactivities.

WhileWRJSisterhoodmaynothavesuchdramaticissues,weworktirelesslytobeastrong,supportiveforceatthetemple.ThismonthonFriday,March31,weareworkingwithRabbiChizneronaserviceentitledShabbatofInspiration:FacingLife'sChallenges.Originally,wewereplanningaservicetobringattentiontothosebattlingbreastcancer,butwhenwesawallthediversechallengesthatourtemplecommunityfaces—frommyriadhealthissuestopersonalrelationshipsandloss—wewantedtobroadenourapproachtobemoreinclusive.WeinvitedYanniWattenmakertospeakattheservice.WhilesheheadstheBreastCancerAllianceofConnecticut,shealsohasabroaddepthofexperienceinmanysocialissues,includingaddiction-recoverysupport.

Sincethetemple’sCaringCommitteedoesgreatoutreachtothoseofusgoingthroughdifficulttimes,wehopeyouwillhonoryourlovedonesbymakingadonationintheirnameforallthefantasticworktheCaringCommitteedoes.Weinviteyoutojoinustoshareyourstoryofissuesyou’veovercomeandwhatthey’vetaughtyou.Weareputtingabooklettogetheroftheseinspirationaltalesthatyoucaneithersubmitwithabylineoranonymously.

Tosupportallourgoodworks,weareholdingsomefunfundraisers.OnethatwasheldlastmonthwasaChineseNewYear’sLuncheonatPearlEastthatLaurenChiznerorganized.Wehadablast!TherestaurantreallywentalloutwithbeautifulpresentationsoftypicalLunarNewYearfare.OurnextdinnerinthisserieswillbeheldatMara’sHomemadeinSyossetonMarch27andwillfeaturePassoverdishes.Youwon’twanttomissit,sosignupsoon.

Bynow,you’vealreadyboughtyourPurimPackages,another“fun”draiser.WehopeyouknowthatthisprogramalsobenefitsJewishservicemenandwomenintheU.S.ArmedForces.Wesendthempackageseveryyearandreceivewonderfulthank-younotes,whichweoftenpostinthebulletinandreadatservices.WealsosendpackagestocollegestudentsrelatedtoTempleJudeamembers(ifyousignedup)tokeepthemconnectedwiththeirfaithinafunway.

OurRummageSalewillbeheldonApril2and3thisyear.Don’tforgettodonateyourgentlyusedclothingandhousewares.Wehelpyoucleanoutyourclosets,andyourdonationshelpthoseinneedatgreatlyreducedprices.Youcanalsovolunteerforthiswonderfulphilanthropicevent.Justcontactthetempleofficeformoreinfo.

NeverforgetthatourBookClubisopentoeveryone.We’vereadsomewonderfulcontemporaryfiction,mostrecentlyTheUndergroundRailroadbyColsonWhiteheadandCommonwealthbyAnnPatchett.BeforeauthorJudyBatalionspeaksatourtempleonTuesday,April25,wewillreadherbookWhiteWalls,whichtellsthestoryofgrowingupinahouseholdofhoarders.Ontheafternoonofhervisit,we’llmeetat1:30p.m.todiscussherbook,andthen(luckyus!)gettohearherspeaklaterthatnight.Cometooneorbothevents.We’dlovetohaveyou.

ThisisjustsomeoftheworkWRJSisterhoodisconductingrightnow.Manymorespring“bulbs”ofprogrammingandfundraisingwillbloombeforethesummerisuponus.We’llkeepplantingforourtemplecommunity—comeenjoythegarden.

AtthetimeIamwritingthis,weareonlyafewdaysawayfromourblooddrive,scheduledforFebruary26.IwasveryhappywhenRabbiChiznerputmeintouchwithhisnephew,RichiePortnoy.Richiehadputtheblooddrivetogetherentirelyonhisown.BrotherhoodbecameinvolvedafterRichiearrangedthedateandcoordinatedwiththeNewYorkBloodCentertoensureasuccessfulevent.And,ifthatwasn’tenough,herecruitedasmallarmyofdonors.AllBrotherhoodhadtodowaspromotetheeventandaddmoredonorstomaketheeventanevenbiggersuccess.Inshort,wehadtheeasyjob.

Ican'tsayenoughaboutthededicationandworkittakestohaveasuccessfulevent.Anythingispossiblewhenpeoplecometogether,especiallywhenit’stoworkforaworthycommoncause.Theblooddriveisonlyoneexampleofwhatcanbeaccomplishedwhenwepulltogether.ThisiswhatBrotherhoodmeanstome.OurBrotherhoodisnotjustaboutgettingtogether.Weareaboutgettingthings,importantthings,done.BlooddonationssavelivesandweshouldallbeproudthatTempleJudeaanditsBrotherhoodarepartofthisevent.Withthatsaid,IwanttothankRabbiChiznerandRichiePortnoyforgettingme—andBrotherhood—involved.

PROMDRESSDRIVEIt’sanannualtradition.Everyyearwesay,“Everygirldeservestofeelbeautifulatherprom!”Thisspring,TempleJudeawillonceagainparticipateinaprojecttohelpdisadvantagedLongIslandteenagegirlsattendtheirhighschoolproms.Weneedyourgentlyused—andstillgorgeous—formaldresses,alongwithshoes,bagsandcostumejewelry.Gothroughyourowncloset—andyourdaughter'swardrobe.Lastyear,ourcongregantswereextremelygenerousandtheclothingwasdistributedataveryfestive“shoppingevent”atalocalcollege.

AsIwritethisarticle,itisstilltwoweeksbeforePurim.So,whyamIalreadythinkingaboutYomHashoah?It’sbecauseIjustgotoffthephonewitharabbiinQueensaboutgivingaYomHashoahaddresstoacombinedgroupoffivecongregations.Duringourconversation,heaskedmewhatIthoughtwouldbeanappropriatetopicandmessageforthisyear’scommemoration.

WhenIhungupthephone,threetopicscrowdedmymind:

•TheShoah,thepast,thewordzachor(remember);

•Globalanti-Semitismoftoday;and

•ThefutureofourpeopleandtheStateofIsrael.

Fromthepast,welearnhowaneducatedandintellectualsocietywastransformed;howordinarymoral,God-fearing,church-goinghumanbeingsbecamemurderers.

TheShoahdidnothappenatonce.Theatrocitiesdidnothappeninamoment.Itwasastep-by-stepprocess.Itwasintroducedgradually,alongwithanactiveandpassivesupportbysociety.Itbeganwithafailuretoreacttoderisionandhumiliation.Latercamethedenialofrightsandsegregation.Intheend,theJewswerenotonlydispensable,butwereahindrancetonormallifeandthusannihilationwasanappropriateresponse.

TheShoahalsohadafoundationuponwhichtocreateanarrativethatwasbasedonsomepreconceivedideas,mythsandlies.CenturiesofreligiousaccusationsandculturalliesforcedupontheJewswasthefoundationuponwhichtheNaziPartybuiltthecaseagainsttheJewsandtransformedsociety.

OneofthemessagesoftheShoahisthatitisnecessarytoreactatthefirstsignofthedestructiveprocess,ratherthanwhenitistoolate.

Asweexaminethenewsoftodayandcompareittothefoundationandactionofyesterday,weseebywordsandbehaviorindifferentpartsoftheworldthatweareexperiencingmultipleattacksontheJewishpeople.

TheBDS(Boycott,Divestment,Sanctions)movementcontinuestobepromotedinmanypartsoftheworld.Itsobjectiveisclear:thedestructionoftheeconomyofIsrael.

TheaccusationofIsraelofbeinganApartheidStateandanillegalentity,acompletefabrication,isbecomingamantranotonlybytheIslamicworld,buthasenteredthevocabularyoftheAmericancollegesystem.

ThedesecrationofJewishcemeteriesintheheartofAmericaandtheconstantthreattoJewishinstitutionsisnotanisolatedorrandomincident,butaconcertedefforttofosteranti-Semitism.

TheresolutionoftheUNWomen’sRightsConferencethatIsraelistheonlycountryintheworldthatoppresseswomenwhileSaudiArabiaandotherMuslimcountriesanddictatorshipsarenotmentioned,ispartofthehatredandpersecutionoftheJewishStatebytheUN.

Alltheseactionsareaclearindicationthattheattitudesandactsinmanypartsoftheworld—andbymanyorganizations—havemuchincommon:thepersecutionoftheJewishpeople.Wemustrecognizetheevilthatisbeingpropagatedagainstusandunite.
