Santa Barbara Symphony’s Beginning

TICKET PRICES IN 1953: $2.00-2.50-3.00-3.75 Students $1.25

The Santa Barbara Symphony began as a group of community musicians combined with music students from UCSB. It was known as the Santa Barbara Orchestra under the direction of Maurice Faulkner. For about five years, it was an annual event for the orchestra to perform at the Lobero Theatre.

Did you know...Stefan Krayk and Clayton Wilson were co-founders of the Santa Barbara Symphony?

The Santa Barbara Orchestra’s budget the first year was just $10,000.

Fast Footnotes...The “Santa Barbara Overture” was written by Emma Lou Diemer expressly for the Santa Barbara Symphony and premiered on March 23, 1996.

Pianist Andre Watts was awarded the National Medal of the Arts by President Obama in 2012.

Fast Footnotes...The final majestic movement of the Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 was used in the movie “Babe.”

Flute soloist Demarre McGill appeared on an episode of “Mr. Rogers” with his brother Anthony, a clarinetist, when they were students.
