National foreword

This British Standard is the English language version of EN 60598-2-4:1997. It is identical with IEC 60598-2-4:1997. It supersedes BS 4533-102.4:1990 which is withdrawn. The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted to Technical Committee CPL/34/4, Luminaires, which has the responsibility to:

— aid enquirers to understand the text;— present to the responsible international/European committee any enquiries on the interpretation, or proposals for change, and keep the UK interests informed;— monitor related international and European developments and promulgate them in the UK.

A list of organizations represented on this committee can be obtained on request to its secretary. From 1 January 1997, all IEC publications have the number 60000 added to the old number. For instance, IEC 27-1 has been renumbered as IEC 60027-1. For a period of time during the change over from one numbering system to the other, publications may contain identifiers from both systems.Cross-referencesAttention is drawn to the fact that CEN and CENELEC Standards normally include an annex which lists normative references to international publications with their corresponding European publications. The British Standards which implement international or European publications referred to in this document may be found in the BSI Standards Catalogue under the section entitled “International Standards Correspondence Index”, or by using the “Find” facility of the BSI Standards Electronic Catalogue.A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.

Summary of pagesThis document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, the EN title page, pages 2 to 4, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.

4.1 General

4.1.1 ScopeThis section of part 2 of IEC 60598 specifies requirements for portable general purpose luminaires, other than handlamps, for use with tungsten filament, tubular fluorescent and other discharge lamps on supply voltages not exceeding 250 V. It is to be read in conjunction with those sections of part 1 to which reference is made.

4.1.2 Normative referenceThe following normative document contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this section of IEC 60598-2. At the time of publication, the edition indicated was valid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this section of IEC 60598-2 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent edition of the normative document indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of currently valid International Standards.IEC 60529:1989, Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP codes).

4.2 General test requirementsThe provisions of section 0 of IEC 60598-1 apply. The tests described in each appropriate section of Part 1 shall be carried out in the order listed in this section of Part 2.

4.3 DefinitionsThe definitions of section 1 of IEC 60598-1 apply with the following addition:

4.3.1 candlestick luminaires

a portable luminaire having series connected lamps permanently mounted and separated on a free-standing frameNOTE Candlestick luminaires may incorporate E5 or E10 lampholders.

4.4 Classification of luminairesLuminaires shall be classified in accordance with the provision of section 2 of IEC 60598-1 except that portable luminaires designed for standing on a floor or table shall be classified as suitable for direct mounting on normally flammable surfaces.

4.5 MarkingThe provisions of section 3 of IEC 60598-1 apply.

4.6 ConstructionThe provisions of section 4 of IEC 60598-1 apply, together with the requirements of 4.6.1.4.6.1 For portable luminaires, the insulation of flexible cables and cords shall be unlikely to be damaged when moving or adjusting the luminaire or when placing it on its support.Compliance shall be checked by inspection.4.6.2 Wiring shall be fixed by means of wire carriers, clips or similar devices of insulating material, at all places where it might otherwise rub against metal parts in the normal movement of the luminaire, if such rubbing will impair safety. Compliance shall be checked by inspection.4.6.3 Portable luminaires shall have adequate stability. Compliance shall be checked by placing the luminaire in the most unfavourable position of normal use on a plane inclined at an angle of 6° to the horizontal, the surface of the plane being such that the luminaire does not slide.Any instructions supplied by the manufacturer with the luminaire shall receive due consideration in respect of the stability test. The luminaire shall not overturn.Luminaires which are fastened by clamps or similar devices are not subjected to this test.4.6.4 Candlestick luminaires shall be provided with a switch. This switch shall, in candlestick luminaires with E5 or E10 lampholders, switch all lamps on and off simultaneously. The switch shall be part of the luminaire or if in the cord shall be within 300 mm of the luminaire.Compliance is checked by inspection.4.6.5 E5 lampholders shall be used only if the rated voltage does not exceed 25 V per lampholder and the rated voltage of E10 lampholders (60 V or 250 V respectively) shall be respected. The maximum rated wattage of the luminaire shall not exceed 100 W.Compliance is checked by inspection.

4.7 Creepage distances and clearancesThe provisions of section 11 of IEC 60598-1 apply.

4.8 Provision for earthingThe provisions of section 7 of IEC 60598-1 apply.

4.9 TerminalsThe provisions of sections 14 and 15 of IEC 60598-1 apply.

4.10 External and internal wiringThe provisions of section 5 of IEC 60598-1 apply except that:

1) the requirement whereby at least one part of the cord anchorage shall be fixed to or be integral with the luminaire does not apply to table lamps of glass or ceramic material;2) for portable luminaires with a mass less than 1 kg, a rated current not exceeding 2,5 A and provided with a flexible cable of length not greater than 2 m, the cable shall have a nominal cross-sectional area of copper conductor not less than 0,5 mm2.

4.11 Protection against electric shockThe provisions of section 8 of IEC 60598-1 apply, together with the requirements of 4.11.1.4.11.1 Portable Class I luminaires incorporating lampholders for bayonet cap lamps shall either

1) be so designed that the lamp cap is not accessible to the standard test finger when the luminaire is assembled as in normal use, or2) be provided with a metal lampholder which is earthed.

Compliance shall be checked by inspection and, in addition, for Item 1) by a test with the standard test finger shown in IEC 60529.

4.12 Endurance tests and thermal testsThe provisions of section 12 of IEC 60598-1 apply.Luminaires with an IP classification greater than IP20 shall be subjected to the relevant tests of 12.4, 12.5 and 12.6 of section 12 of IEC 60598-1 after the test(s) of 9.2 but before the test(s) of 9.3 of section 9 of IEC 60598-1 specified in 4.13 of this section of IEC 60598-2.

Portable luminaires designed for standing on a floor, and pendants, are supported during the test as in normal use.Portable luminaires designed for standing on a table, and adjustable luminaires, are tested on or above a dull black painted board similar to that described in Annex D of IEC 60598-1.In addition, for portable luminaires designed for standing on a floor or table which overturn when placed in their normal position of use on a plane inclined at an angle of 15° to the horizontal, the test of 12.5.1 of section 12 of IEC 60598-1 is made with the luminaire on a horizontal surface, in the most unfavourable of the overturned positions that may reasonably be expected in practice.

4.13 Resistance to dust and moistureThe provisions of section 9 of IEC 60598-1 apply. For luminaires with an IP classification greater than IP20, the order of the tests specified in section 9 of IEC 60598-1 shall be as specified in 4.12 of this section of IEC 60598-2.

4.14 Insulation resistance and electric strengthThe provisions of section 10 of IEC 60598-1 apply.

4.15 Resistance to heat, fire and trackingThe provisions of section 13 of IEC 60598-1 apply.
