Gulf Aluminium RollingMill CompanyMonday September 20 2010Gulf Aluminium Rolling Mill Company (GARMCO), owned by the governmentsof Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Iraq, commenced operationin 1986 with a nominal capacity of 40,000 tonnes per year of common alloysheet and coils. By 1988, GARMCO production had exceeded its design capacityand has since been expanded to over 165,000 tpy, with higher added valueitems such as foil stock, computer components, building products and circlesbeing added to the product range. The company is now planning its next majorexpansion, which will boost capacity to 320,000 tpy in the first stage and toover 465,000 tpy subsequently with the use of modern technology andincreased hot and cold rolling capacity

Delegates will depart the conference hotel on the morning of September 20 forthe short bus trip to the rolling mill. The plant tour will terminate at noon withdelegates either returning to the conference hotel direct or joining the Albasmelter visit in the afternoon (bookable separately).

Aluminium BahrainSmelter and CalcinerMonday September 20 2010Aluminium Bahrain has been at the heart of Gulf aluminium industry growth forseveral decades, from its inception as a modest 58,000 tonne plant back in 1968to its state-of-the-art Line 5 added in 2005, which has boosted capacity to morethan 830,000 tonnes, with consideration being given to further expansion to1.2m tonnes. As well as its reduction lines and cast houses, the company has adedicated carbon department and a 1500MW power plant. A 450,000 tpy cokecalcining plant and a water desalination plant are also in operation at thecompany’s marine terminal.

Delegates will depart the conference hotel at midday on September 20 for theshort bus trip to the smelter and calciner sites.

Qatalum aluminiumsmelterWeds-Thurs 22-23 September 2010Qatar Aluminium (Qatalum) is a 50-50 joint venture between Qatar Petroleumand Hydro Aluminium. The greenfield aluminium smelter, located in MesaieedIndustrial City, commenced production of liquid aluminium from its potlines inDecember 2009, and will be the largest aluminium smelter ever to be built in one phase, with the ability to produce 585,000 tpy of aluminium. The Qatalumcomplex includes a carbon plant, a state-of-the-art casthouse producing value-added aluminium products such as extrusion ingots, foundry alloys and standardingots, as well as a port and storage facilities to handle the imports of alumina,coke and pitch, and a captive 1,350 MW power plant. New cells will come online throughout 2010, reaching full production capacity of 585,000 tonneswhen all 704 cells are in operation by fourth quarter 2010.

Delegates will fly from Bahrain to Qatar on the evening of September 22 for an overnight stay in the capital, Doha, before visiting the smelter the following morning.
