BEFORE
AFTERAFTER
Kedarnath, one of the twelve jyotirlings, is an important hindu pilgrimage. Kedarnath temple is believed to have been constructed in the 8th century. Before disaster, kedarpuri was densly built leading to haphazard development and narrow streets near temple. The extents of kedarpuri were wide.
In June 2013, Kedarnath valley was hit by flash floods. Majority of the area was completely washed away. This lead to the formation of a natural visual access towards the temple.Loss of infrastructure and land lead to the decrease in the extents of kedarpuri.Yet the temple stands strong, giving us a chance to restore it in a better way.

Background
Kedarpuri is surrounded by two rivers, of which Mandakini river forms the western edge. After the floods the edges of kedarpuri needs to be strengthen by retaining walls to avoid landslides and unstability.
There is greater vision of development of Kedar valley with multiple interventions along with the development of Kedarpuri
The flow of Mandakini river and topography of Kedarpuri give the favorable conditions for the formation of ghats at the confluence point with Saraswati river. This development will allow the pilgrims to perform any religious ceremonies, adding strength to the values of Kedarnath Dham.
6. Mandakini River Retaining Wall
PROJECT DESCRIPTION : During the 2013 floods after a landslide huge amount of water started gushing down Mandakini and Saraswati rivers along with huge amount of silt, rocks and boulders. There was a lot of washout and Damage to the existing River Edges
As part of the overall master plan for the Kedarnath, river edge protection is to be developed along this 350+ meter long river edge on eastern bank of river Mandakini.
The proposed river edge Mandakini river will help in multiple ways; defining the flow of the river, protecting the soil from further erosion and providing platforms for views as well as providing Infra and Services path on the Western side of Kedarpuri.
The design of the retaining Wall is evolved from the existing terrain elevation in order to minimize alteration to the current terrain and restore the land that was washed away in the Disaster.
