“Russian icon maker, teacher and lecturer, Marina Forbes, will offer "The Art of Icon Paint-ing" workshop. It is a 4 session (15-hour total) hands-on studio course for students interested in learning how to create traditional Russian icons, one of the world's oldest and most respected forms of religious art. The program will include a detailed discussion and demonstration of tra-ditional materials and methods of icon making. Then, under the direction of the instructor, stu-dents will create their own icons using a combination of traditional and contemporary materials and methods. Students will learn about board and painting surface preparation, gessoing, im-age rendering, pigments, brush strokes techniques, detailing, highlighting, gilding, Old Slavonic lettering, and varnishing.”
The above describes the opportunity that presented itself to
Christ Church this week and which the Cabinet is encouraging
the use of our space. If you attended either of the past two
December concerts by the Russian Men’s Chorus of St. Pe-
tersburg, you may remember Marina’s accompanying exhibit
of lovely, spiritually inspired paintings. She offers a free lec-
ture on the 1,000 year history of this traditional technique to
precede the four classes. As the host for this lecture and work-
shops, Christ Church could benefit by another aspect of com-
munity exposure. Cost for the 15 hours of studio instruction is
$295 plus materials. If you are interested, please email me
with a list of your best days/times during August and/or Sep-
tember. [email protected]
