• The therapist should not lead the client, but rather bethere for the client while the client directs the progress of the therapy.

• Supportive, not reconstructive.

• The client needs to achieve independence.

“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if I can let thembe. When I look at a sunset, I don’t find myself saying,“Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner”, Idon’t try to control the sunset, I watch with awe as itunfolds”

• Rogers believed that every person could achieve hisgoals, wishes and desires in life. When they did so, self-actualization took place.

• The closer the ideal-self is to the self-image, the morefulfilled and happier the person you will be.

“When I look at the world I'm pessimistic, but when I

look at people I am optimistic.”

• If someone accepts us and everything we are, they setno conditions on respecting or loving us. Rogers calls thisunconditional positive regard and he believes that aconsequence of being totally accepted by others is totalacceptance of ourselves by ourselves.

• Any relationship which reduces incongruence is atherapeutic relationship according to Rogers. It consistsof 3 important qualities:• Unconditional positive regard• Empathy• Genuineness

• If a person feels these three qualities in a relationship, they are said to be in a therapeutic, healing or growingrelationship.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself

just as I am, then I can change.”

• A little anxiety is good.

• The complex society that we live in nurtures us. But it canalso turn against us to the extent of destroying us.

• Clients are not objects of experimentation.

“The Past has its charm, but nothing new ever happensthere.”
