Part two of our article on six areas in which some WordPress website owners can let themselves down.

In part one we provided some useful WordPress tips for administrators, now we continue covering the final three areas.

Area 4 – Enrich your content

A blog post with an accompanying YouTube video will help you present a more enriched message, plus help you attract traffic from YouTube and aid your SEO.

When embedding YouTube video turn off show related videos.

Plus include your website url in the first sentence of the YouTube video description.

A gallery at the bottom of a post with optimised images showing an open day event, will make sure the web page loads quickly, but provide additional content should the reader be interested.

Then you could embed one smaller image within the post content itself.

You don’t always need images or video content, but occasionally it might be beneficial to include.

For instance if you run an entertainment business, then you should include additional media when possible, the same for a business selling items like flowers.

If you have a tight budget, but don’t wish to use images licensed your use, then build up your own image library or YouTube channel.

Many digital photography cameras created in the last half decade can record short video clips.

Coupled with free editing software and services, it often isn’t too hard to create your own digital library for your blog and other uses.

Area 5 – Updating WordPress and Plugins

Often lack of blog posts and cms updates go hand in hand.

Out of sight, can obviously equal out of mind at times, but this is dangerous for an administrator, especially when regarding security.

Making sure you regularly log into your WordPress dashboard will help you stay on top of administration, and stay notified of when most site updates are required.

Area 6 – Backups and Database Maintenance

It is all too easy to forget about backing up a WordPress website, that is why automation is so important.

Even if you have a large website, it doesn’t take long to backup the MySQL database daily, then regularly you can backup your wp-contents folder manually.

Plus you might unnecessarily have a bloated MySQL database slowing down your website, worse still not being helped by a WordPress cache.

It takes ten minutes or less to setup a WordPress cache on a small website, it is well worth the effort.

Conclusion

It is very easy to neglect a website, especially during the early days of a website’s life.

However even when a website is receiving good traffic, you can drop by the ball by becoming complacent and allowing competitors to get the upper hand.

Often it is little changes that working together can give your website the ‘oomph’ it requires, else providing you with a good footing to move forward.
