Northam – An awareness and informative session on human rights was held at the Northam Victim Empowerment Centre on 21 March.
Rights Day, was addressed by Klaas Ndiweni, social worker at the Social Department of Justice at the Northam Police Station as well as constable Masesadi Molope. Alcohol and drug abuse were singled out as the major causes of domestic violence. The community was made aware of the various forms of abuse taking place. The presenters also lamented the abuse of children, wives and the elderly.Abuse by partners often makes the victims feel ashamed to report the incident. This was also brought to the fore. The community was encouraged to speak up.“We want you as a community to know that you have the right to speak up! You have the right to break the silence of any abuse. If you do not break the silence, we won’t be able to help. We are all human beings and have a right to live, to learn and to stand on our own two feet!” constable Molope said.
Thabazimbi – A tourism business devotee, Kabelo Mothupi of Thabazimbi, will soon be running short of space in his trophy cabinet for the accolades that kept pouring in recognition of his work.Mothupi was delegated by the Department of Tourism to market and promote SA Tourism and to give a presentation in China about South African Tourism from February until the end of March 2017 in Beijing and Yangzhou.He further received a letter of invitation from the National Department of Tourism early this year to be a motivational speaker at the International Tourist Guides’ Day Celebration under the theme: travel, enjoy and respect. “It is so encouraging to note that there are people out there who recognize and appreciate my work,” Mothupi said.Mothupi has a string of accomplishments under his name, and these include: tourism ambassador, best of the best national tourist guide, founder and managing director of Merakeng Tours & Adventures: “tours without limits”, award-winning tourist guide, cultural heritage researcher, Mandarin graduate, environmental education connoisseur, winner of the Lilizela best of the best tourism provincial awards 2016/2017 & lilizela tourism national award winner 2017.
