Pro Tips: Many times I have heard comments from members about not keeping your head still in the golf swing as the major fault. Many players are told to keep their head still during their swing, which ends up leading to a poor backswing position. It’s true that the head shouldn’t move up and down a lot, but it must move a bit side to side, especially in the backswing. Most players who try to keep their head exactly still end up swaying their hips and getting their club in a position that makes it very difficult to strike the ball solid. The result is usually a slice.
Try the natural backswing drill. Assume your setup position and fold your arms across your chest. Then simply turn your head back over your right shoulder until you can see an object that’s directly behind you. Do this five times. On the fifth time, without changing your body position, simply turn your head back to see the ball. This is your natural backswing turn. Your head has to move a bit sideways to get you into a good position. Once
you understand this, getting your arms and club in position is much easier and more comfortable.
Green Talk: If you have been out lately you have seen the fresh dirt inside the rough lines. The plan is to introduce Bermuda grass into these areas to provide a better grass that can withstand the extreme temperatures in the summer and become a better playing condition year round. The process getting to a finish takes some preparation. First we must spray out all the cool season grasses. Then rototill the area to provide a better condition for the Bermuda stolons to grow into the soil. Once the stolons have begun to grow then it’s only a matter of time for the Bermuda grass to fill in. This is the best time of year to do this application, the hotter the better. The hope is that in 8 weeks most of the area will be filled in, and by this time next year you will have an awesome playing condition. The acres that we are planting is about seven acres.
Congratulations to Bryce Loosigian who won the overall JGANC Fort Washington Junior Classic held at Fort. Bryce shot 69, 71 for a two day total of 140. His closest competitor was Tyler Garner who shot 142. The field consisted of 97 junior’s ages ranging from 12 to 18. Below are the Fort Juniors who placed in this prestigious junior event.

• Club has 6 Proprietary members waiting to resign. The total of Bylaw allowed playing memberships is 440 - currently at 435.
• MSC (Laird/Steele) - membership report approved as submitted.
FINANCE – Dean Pryor• Over-all financial operations for the
fiscal year continue to perform better than budget with cash balances being maintained to cover minimum 2 months club expenses.
• For the benefit of the 2 new board members, Pryor outlined general history of club financial position from the time he became CFO 12 years ago. At onset Club had cash balances of less than 1 month’s expenses and a general Board attitude of spend whatever is budgeted annually. During his tenure, Pryor has instituted a rigorous annual budgeting process involving the Club Manager and Director of Golf, instilled an attitude of looking to control expenses by both management and the Board and seeking membership approval for unbudgeted capital expenditures. Consequently, the Club is in the best financial condition in its history with no dues increase for the past 3 years and sufficient cash reserves to handle unexpected problems asthey arose.

THE PARTING SHOT... Scott Laird, Board PresidentI hope you all enjoyed your July 4thJuly holiday. I hope you were able to play some golf. I write with great anticipation
for the next year. I look forward to serving as President of the Board at my second home, the Fort. I will enjoy working with the members of the Board, its Officers, Alan, Ali, Jose, Chef Steve and the membership to help make Fort the best that it can be.
We have a couple of members leaving the Board, but they are not going far. I want to thank our outgoing President Larry Wapner for all of his hard work and effort. I am comforted to know he will be in the Boardroom as Past President to help out all of us over the next year. I also want to thank Bob Duley who has put in considerable time and effort as sitting Director of the Greens and Pro Shop Committee. I understand he will continue to serve as a member.
For the first time in many years, I expect that at the end of this month, Fort will not have a resignation waiting list and will have a full “playing” membership. Credit goes to Alan and Jose for having the course in such great condition and Ali and Chef Steve for such great food and service in the clubhouse.
Our solid, and now full, membership combined with prudent financial management over the past several years has Fort on solid financial ground and looking to improve the course
and clubhouse as the budget permits. Our year end solar “true up” with PG&E is due in August. We should be able to provide solid data to the membership shortly thereafter.
We will soon have a new web-site up and running. The site is currently in “beta” while we work on the content, but so far it is presents well, is easy to navigate and very functional. It is expected to go “live” on July 15. It will be compatible with mobile devices and tablets, will have a password protected member’s only area, and will have multiple communication options for the membership. We have the ability to further expand the web-site’s utility over time.
The new chipping green area is open for use, so you can all work on your short game. Thanks for your patience. The bunker practice green should be open for use by the end of the month. We are continuing the process of replacing some of the cool weather rough. Stolons are being planted in various parts of the course. These areas will be fairly wet and marked as ground under repair until ready for play. Please take relief on the rare occasion you hit into these rough areas.
Looking forward, we have Junior Camps starting July 11, 18 and August 1. NCGA 4 ball qualifying is July 9 and the Annual Hole In One Tournament on July 30, 8:30 shotgun start. August 19 is the annual Lobster Feed, sign up early as this fills up fast. Last, but certainly not least, on August 6, we will have a retirement party for Lynda to thank her for her 27 years of service, warm smiles and strong drinks! Be sure to come out and say thanks.
