Goodbye, Killer by Pernice Brothers is Joe Pernice’s first band album since 2006’s LiveaLittle. In several weeks-long bursts of work over the course of a couple of years, in between writing a novel, recording a soundtrack for said novel, touring on both, and doing real-life things, Joe, his brother Bob, and long-time collaborators James Walbourne (Pretenders, Son Volt, Peter Bruntnell) and Ric Menck (Matthew Sweet, Velvet Crush) holed up in an attic in Boston and recorded these 10 Pernice originals.

Over a 15-year career in music, Pernice has made 13 full-length records. He began in the mid-90’s, with Scud Mountain Boys, who released two albums (PineBox and DancetheNightAway, later compiled as TheEarlyYear) before signing to Sub Pop and releasing Massachusetts, considered by many to be an alt-country masterpiece. In 1998, Pernice disbanded the Scuds and assembled Pernice Brothers, recording OvercomeByHappiness (Sub Pop), called “a startling slice of beauty” by TheNewYorkTimes and “A thing of pernicious beauty indeed” by TheIrishTimes. In 1999 and 2000, he re-leased two records, under the names ChappaquiddickSkyline andBigTobacco. (More or less considered solo records, they do feature assorted members of the Pernice family circus, so that designation is a bit misleading. This naming inconsistency also dogs the enterprise to this day, and therefore, Pernice promises to call everything Pernice Brothers from now on, until he changes his mind.)

In 2001, Pernice and his manager decided that they were as capable of not selling many records as anyone. They founded Ashmont Records, releasing a series of Per-nice Brothers records, featuring various players, beginning with TheWorldWon’tEnd, which was called a “lush, perfectly realized record” by TheOnion (not ironically). 2003 brought the release of Yours,MineandOurs, called “a monumental record from a tow-ering talent” by Magnet. A live record and DVD, Nobody’sWatching/Nobody’sListening was released in 2004. In 2005, DiscoveraLovelierYou came out, and the song “Amaz-ing Glow” was included in the legendary “Partings” episode of GilmoreGirls. Pernice performed the song on the show. LiveaLittle, called “a stunning album” by Spin was released in 2006.

In 2009 Joe Pernice published his first novel, ItFeelsSoGoodWhenIStop (Riverhead/Penguin), and Ashmont released a soundtrack of the same name, more or less, featur-ing Pernice covering songs referenced in the novel. (A novella, Meat isMurder, was published by Continuum Books in 2003, as part of their popular 33 1/3 series. It re-mains one of the bestselling books in the series.)

Goodbye,Killer should appease Pernice fans from all walks of life. It includes the full-on rock ‘n rollers “Jacqueline Susann” and “Bechamel,” signature pop songs “The Great Depression” and “F***ing and Flowers,” the Scuds-esque “Newport News” and “The End of Faith,” and two AM radio would-be classics “The Loving Kind” and “Goodbye, Killer.” Pernice refers to the undeniably show tune-y number “We Love the Stage,” as his “homage to vaudeville, indie rock and learning to love betting against yourself.” (Whatever. Pernice’s manager just hopes it’s the first song in the musical he and Walbourne are going to write, because she’d love to lose a lot of money producing musicals too.)

Goodbye,Killer is a versatile album that’s trademark Pernice.

Performed by Joe Pernice, James Walbourne, Ric Menck and Bob Pernice. Recorded and mix at Upper Ashmont Studios by Bob Pernice. Mastered by Jeff Lipton and Ma-ria Rice at Peerless Mastering. Cameos by Laura Stein (vocals), John Felock (bass), Elizabeth Cheever (trombone).

All songs by Joe Pernice, published by Bony Gap Music (BMI), administered by Bug.

Ragged and Right features studio recordings of Jack Rose with D. Charles Speer and the Helix recorded in August 2008 by Jason Meagher at Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York

D. Charles Speer and the Helix on this recording is Dave Shuford (No Neck Blues Band, Suntanama), Marc Orleans (Sunburned Hand of the Man), Hans Chew, Jason Meagher (Black Dirt Studios, No Neck Blues Band), and Rob “Moose” Gregory

CD version comes in a 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package

LP version comes in a full color jacket with spot UV gloss printing and is limited to a first pressing of 1,000 copies with download coupon

“Shuford’s romps channel both dusty open spaces and cramped dim places, scars and bars from the Deep South and Old West.” - Dusted Magazine

“Rose was a spectacular guitar player whose fingers moved like dancing spiders across the strings” - Philadelphia City Paper

This slab of gripping sound was brought about by Jack Rose’s exuberant love of lowdown music. Inspired by the Mordicai Jones/Link Wray 3 Track Shack sessions, the idea for this collaboration was germinated while Rose was traveling through the heartland on a tour with D. Charles Speer & the Helix in spring 2008. Musicians used to the road are familiar with the phenomenon wherein a certain tape or recording becomes the thematic soundtrack to the tour at hand. In this case, daily doses of “Scorpio Woman” and “In the Pines” as performed by Link Wray became the touchstones for their travels together. Jack got so excited by the vibes emanating from these songs that he thought to break with his usual acoustic approach and get some electricity in his life again. So he enlisted the Speer band to join in some unhinged and unrepentant fun in the studio. Recorded using an all live, no overdub approach, the resultant session was deemed an all time favorite experience by everyone lucky enough to partake in it. A gleaming bottle of Buffalo Trace helped shepherd us through the dark hours of the night, and in turn that spirit animal adorns the front cover of the record. As producer, Jason Meagher was able to capture the visceral rough and tumble feel that invigorated his Black Dirt Studio in the dog days of August 2008. Featuring the original lineup of D. Charles Speer & the Helix in peak form and rare lap steel and Telecaster stylings from Rose, Ragged and Right displays a vibrancy and depth of feeling that is striking and unforgettable. D. Charles Speer & the Helix came together through the common hearing of a certain inflection. Born from the heart and mind of David Charles Shuford, strains of glassine cruelty, broken glasses and ruptured knees mixed with memories of Chet Atkins lullabies and ZZ Top vids to generate a songcraft steeped in tradition but themed for the burned. Setting stages alight since 2006, D. Charles Speer & the Helix are a force to be reckoned with where ever the nightlife reigns supreme. Two albums were tracked at Jason Meagher’s nascent Black Dirt Studios: After Hours and the most recent LP Distillation, released on Three Lobed Recordings in November 2009. The Speer gang feel right at home on the road and love to get heels kicking in clubs, house parties, bars, basements and VFW halls across the land. A native of Virginia and resident of Philadelphia since 1998, Jack Rose first rose to prominence in the drone/noise/folk unit, Pelt. Pelt can be counted among the early influential new music underground bands such as UN, No Neck Blues Band, Charalambides, Tower Recordings and Six Organs of Admittance. Jack recorded and toured with the band up until 2006 but released his first solo LP, Red Horse, White Mule, of post-Takoma, American primitive guitar, in 2002. Along with the influences of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, Jack also incorporated North Indian classical, early American blues, minimalism and bluegrass into his singular style. 2005 saw the release of his fourth LP, Kensington Blues, which incorporated all of the aforementioned influences and his playing/composing fully flowered. That LP is now considered a classic of contemporary guitar music. His tenth LP Luck In The Valley was released on Thrill Jockey in February 2010 to wide spread critical acclaim. Sadly, Jack unexpectedly passed away in December 2009 at the age of 38. He is greatly missed by all those who knew him but his influence and legacy will persist forever.

After nearly 10 years of silence Markus Popp’s Oval project is back!

Oh is pressed on 150 gram white vinyl and housed in an LP jacket with a hand-glued photo art card on the front. The 12” is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide with download coupon

The 25 minute Oh EP will be followed by Oval’s brand new full length album in August

This is Oval like you have never heard him before

“some of the most serene and aquatic music of the 90s...This record is why Markus Popp was called the new Eno.” - Pitchfork on 94diskont (Top 100 Albums of the 1990s)

“Popp is smart enough to achieve the unheard, deft enough to have a signature sound without doing the same thing over and over again. Like Eno 20-plus years ago, his work is not only superlative, fascinat-ing and totally listenable, it’s a template for future research.” - Mike McGonigal

Markus Popp’s first Oval release after almost a decade of silence is a spectacular departure from the deconstructivist electronica that made him a laptop legend. Instead, and totally out of nowhere, this 15-track EP establishes Popp as an accomplished musician, who is delivering a glimpse of his very own exciting flavor of “free” music in the best sense of the word. Mind you, we’re not talking about just another laptop producer who is hiring a bunch of musicians for occasional live shows, but Popp delivering a true tour-de-force of improvised music beyond boundaries which still always ensures to deliver (and expand) that very special, haunting Oval atmosphere. This meticulously crafted EP is indeed a wild ride - and it is in fact so fundamentally different in almost every imaginable way (Guitars? Are those actual drums?!?) that we will instead conveniently list what remains unchanged: Popp’s latest tracks still have this almost unsettling, organic, soothing atmosphere that has made Oval tracks and remixes such timeless classics. What makes this new release especially exciting, is that Popp effortlessly merges totally unexpected musicianship with his sensibility for abstract, angular electronics and blends them into a vibrantly colorful music that truly feels alive. The new Oval sound is so arresting, emotional and dynamic that all distinctions like “programmed vs. played”, “laptop vs. improvisation” or “acoustic vs. electronic” are rendered meaningless. This EP (and forthcoming Double CD) are an attempt at breaking new ground, just as Systemisch single-handedly created the glitch movement back in the 90s, which continues to provoke and inspire many music producers all over the world to this day. The 2010 Oval sound is an equally radical departure from what else is out there today - and yet, it’s more accessible than ever. Still one question remains: how did he do it? The most important paradigm for the new sound was that everything should be done the exact opposite way from how it was done in the past. Popp exclusively used (cheap) commercially available software and plug-ins instead of programming his own. He utilized one (four years old at that) $500 stock PC instead of several high-end Macs. All the virtual instruments are played with his own hands. And last but certainly not least, scales, harmonics, and melody are the foundation of this music instead of theory and meta-discourse. Popp remarks that “after years of dissection and denial I wanted to try making ‘real’ music for a change. The design goals for the short side B tracks were to attain the sense of a familiar sound and ‘ringtone’. While it took me years to get the tech aspect down, the tracks themselves are pretty much recorded live and from here, I am very much looking forward to evolving this setup like a real band.” In a sense, this new Oval music as a whole is a trompe l’oeil, an acoustic illusion. But it’s a very convincing one, to a point, where you don’t insist on the specific qualities of the “original” any longer. These days, a flock of birds in the distance in a movie scene is simply “there”, whether it was actually part of the shot or just added digitally in post - it just doesn’t make a difference any more.

Mitch Woods GUMBO BLUES

a tribute to Smiley Lewis and the pioneers of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues

STREET DATE: 6/15/110

Mitch Woods is easily one of the finest boogie pianists on the planet, and I would argue that he also incorporates wing-dinging swing, jumping blues, and gut-rocking rhythm & blues fury at its best. So we in New Orleans are especially proud that he has chosen to devote so much of his mega talents in honoring the great music and musicians of our city. He and the crack local musicians make that music sizzle like greasy onions, bell peppers, and shrimp for an especially tasty po-boy.

From the first notes of GUMBO BLUES,those who ever heard old-time New Orleans blues and r&b knows they are in the EZ Chair of funky good times...and that’s not to say La-Z-Boy! In New Orleans we take our fun seriously! It takes years of hard work to perfect a perfect cradle of butt-bumping, beer-sloshing celebrating, and for non-natives capturing that magic is even harder. But Mitch Woods has pitched hip-switching around the globe many times. And one of his favorite stops is the Big Easy, where he visits often and is an adopted favorite son. .

On GUMBO BLUES Mitch devotes the entire CD to New Orleans’ undeservedly forgotten master of shouting jump blues, Smiley Lewis, who is best known for having recorded the original versions of other peoples’ hits—namely Dave Edmunds’ “I Hear You Knocking,” Elvis Presley’s “One Night,” and Fats Domino’s “Blue Monday.” As the author of the (box set) biography on Smiley Lewis, I can attest to Mitch’s remarkably authentic revival of his music, with all of super tight musicianship and manic explosive intensity that marked Dave Bartholomew’s finest sessions. No one could ever duplicate Smiley’s weird foghorn voice, but Mitch’s muscular vocal cords make the songs very much his own.

Fats Domino’s right-hand tenor man for over 60 years, Herbert Hardesty appears here, along with two young stallion saxophone standbys of Allen Toussaint’s band (who also appeared on his tour with Elvis Costello), Amadee Castenell and Brian “Breeze” Cayolle; they split the solos between them. Other New Orleans men here include Dr. John’s guitarist John Fohl, Jon Cleary’s bassist Cornell Williams and Bonerama (brass-hop anyone?) drummer Eric Bolivar.

In short, if this music doesn’t move you Jack, you dead!

– Rick Coleman, author of Blue Monday: Fats Domino and the Lost Dawn of Rock “n” Roll (from the liner notes)

John Cunningham1998-2002

John Cunningham 1998-2002 is a compilation of two of his albums: Homeless House (2002) and Happy-go-unlucky (2002), plus an extra track from the sessions for the latter.

John Cunningham is British and lives and works in the North of England. Cun-ningham’s elegant brand of pop music owes a certain debt to smooth pre-rock classic pop of the Cole Porter school, mixed with a touch of Bacharach, Wilson, McCartney, and Costello. Unlike those artists, however, Cunningham infuses his music with an almost Nick Drake-like acoustic vibe that suits his delicate yet melodic compositions beautifully. (This John Cunningham is, of course, not to be confused with the Scottish fiddle player who was a member of Silly Wizard and other folk groups.)

Born in Liverpool, England, Cunningham attended University in the East Sus-sex town of Brighton, where he quickly fell in with the city’s thriving artistic and musical community. A demo cassette landed him at the tiny British indie La-Di-Da, which released Cunningham’s debut EP, Backwards Steps, produced by ex-Housemartins guitarist Stan Cullimore and released in 1989.

Cunningham’s first full album, 1993’s Shankly Gates, is much more stripped down and intimate than Backwards Steps, with jazzy piano and subtle trum-pet and oboe accents. It was rapturously received by the French press, which compared Cunningham to artists like Robert Wyatt and late-period Talk Talk, but as would be the case throughout Cunningham’s career, sales did not match the critical reaction. Cunningham’s third release, 1994’s Bringing in the Blue, is even more refined and elegant, but it continued the trend of ecstatic reviews on the Continent, little notice in Great Britain, and total invisibility in the United States, with sales figures to match.

Cunningham dropped out of sight for nearly five years after Bringing in the Blue, finally reappearing in late 1998 with the sublime Homeless House. A sweetly me-lodic and gentle album with an even more stripped-down sound than his two previous albums, Homeless House sounds at times like a more upbeat version of Drake’s Bryter Layter.

After the release of Homeless House, Cunningham began collaborating with Me-hdi Zannad of the French pop group Fugu. Cunningham mixed Fugu’s de-but, 2000’s Fugu1, and Zannad wrote the orchestral arrangements for a track on Cunningham’s follow-up to Homeless House, Happy –go-unlucky released in 2002.

Cunningham is currently working on a new album, which will hopefully see the light of day in our lifetime.

The second artist album from Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint is a deep, deep, dark and uncompromising suite of music. The only Brainfeeder artist to neither come from or ever to have lived in LA, Lorn has already developed an international following for his music. Now, with “Nothing Else” the musician and artist reveals his debut full length. Epic, melancholic and brutal, it’s a record which the listener has to be prepared the immerse themselves in. The rewards make it worth the effort. From the fairground dramatics of “None An Island” through the soundtrack sweep and military momentum of “Army of Fear,” the discombobulated atmospherics of “Bretagne,” the sheer brute force of the bass on “Automaton,” the acid-fried detailing on “Voids” 1 and 2, the woozy migraine-simulacra of “Tomorrow,” the off-centre melodic catchiness of “Glass & Silver” and “Cherry Moon,” the deconstructed electro of “Greatest Silence” and on to the utterly uncompromsing conclusion of “What’s The Use,” where an underwater hip hop break smashes up against Hammond and the ghost of a human voice, this is a record which feels like its been hewn from stone. Albeit electronic stone.

Child BiteThe Living Breathing Organ Summer

OVERVIEW:

The most rewarding and intoxicating artistic exhibitions are those that throw caution to the known wind. With their most recent effort, The Living Breathing Organ Summer, Child Bite have created a new wind - forcing nothing and assuming nothing of their audience, but rather inviting us to be an integral part of their fantastic departure from the near sighted mind.

Grab your copies of Oh the Places You’ll Go, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Dark Crystal and the Odyssey and blend them up with the first season of Real Sex, Naked Truth and a few Irving Welsh Novels. This should give you a decent sampling of the manner of storytell-ing lead vocalist Shawn Knight orates in parts ululating howl and parts stern (almost terrifying) warble. The musical pulpit from which Knight preaches his homilies of the strange is comprised of the bone shattering rhythm section of Danny Sperry on drums and Sean Clancy on bass guitar. Sperry infuses the random with the precise without ever straying from his thesis statement of: Urgency is the Impetus for Groove, while Clancy hurls his fingers of agile concrete at the strings of his purple jazz bass as if carving Michelangelo’s David were an event in a strong man contest.

Drawing influence from the likes of Mr. Bungle, the Jesus Lizard, Dead Kennedys with applications of soul, synth, and funk laden quirks –– Child Bite are an eccentric orchestra of punk adrenaline, avant-garde mortar, and lucid epicurean nightmares. Do not fret or succumb to the feelings of pretense or fright you might be experi-encing. This band is a family, a statement, a hobby, an ethos, an outlet, and a bear hug. Put your anxious, and self indulgent lobes to good use.

RacebannonWrap the Body EP

OVERVIEW:

Never a force content to deliver obvious moves, the next release from the Racebannonjuggernaut sees them joining forces with some friends and releasing...*gasp* a DJ-styled 12" release. Yes folks, Wrap the Body!

A collaboration between Racebannon and Jilly Weiss (We Are Hex), and also featuring a full-blown remix from long time friends Yea Big, Kid Static and Stak; this is Racebannon at both their weirdest and yet most recognizable. Yes, the requisite churn, chaos, and dark-ness are all present and yes, Mike Anderson belts out yet another genre-bending throat-box assault. The razor riffing is omnipresent, and the low-end hits like a depth charge. But the token Bannon weapons collide face-first with programmed beats, samples, and an instantly frenzied vocal contribution from Weiss, who sounds like a banshee possessed by equal parts PJ Harvey, bad acid, and Satan herself. The end result is something that is immediately memorable, catchy, scary, and downright original.

In short you are left with another boot-print across the grill that reads "Racebannon."

Consistent with the format, the 12" showcases the studio cut (recorded by Mike Bridavsky at Russian Recording), as well as instrumental and acapella versions on Side A, allowing for a multi-tude of utilities, listening experiences, and applications. Changing pace dramatically, the flip offers a mega-remix from Yea Big, who gives Wrap the Body a glitchy, organ-driven rework that keeps the essence of the original intact while leaving an indelible blueprint of his trademark sound. Long-time collaborator Kid Static also contrib-utes verses to the remix, as does Bloomington rapper Stak, making this a remix in the truest sense. Both rappers offer performances rooted equally in both the cerebral and the visceral spheres, and help to take the track to an entirely different ether than the original. As with Side A, instrumental and acapella versions are also on offer for the brave/DJ-minded listener.

Limited to a one-time pressing of 500 copies, this is an essential purchase for theRacebannon fanatic, as well as all DJ's and vinyl fetishists. Joyful Noise, Racebannon, and some talented contributors bring you one of the more challenging and enjoyable beat-looped, occult-driven, heavy dance disco sludge metal 12"'s you are likely to hear. Come to think of it, it will probably be the only one you ever hear. Only the brave have the mettle... (D.Britts)

Backed by San Jose based roots rock band Careless Hearts James played his first gig in 35 years at the Blank Club in San Jose, CA on September 5, 2009. Includes tracks that have never been played live before such as No Sense of Crime and Night Theme alongside classic Stooges tracks. James Williamson is returning to the stage with Iggy & The Stooges in 2010 (rehearsals began in 2009) for shows in Europe .

The Stooges that went out on tour in spring 1971 were a quite dif-ferent group to any version to have entered a studio. Joining the remaining Fun House veterans - Iggy on vocals, Ron Asheton on guitar and Scott Asheton on drums, were new boys Jimmy Recca on bass and James Williamson on guitar - yes indeed! - a dual guitar Stooges!! ... and Jools Thurston nowhere in sight!!! Armed with a collection of songs written in the back of the van, in venue parking lots and an icebox of a rehearsal space, Yukon Blonde went into the studio in the summer of 2009 to record their first album- which was recently released in both Canada and USA by Bumstead Records, receiving rave reviews from such publications as Exclaim, Under The Radar and Billboard.

While on tour with Jon-Rae Fletcher in the summer of 2008, the band - then known as Alphababy - realized that they needed a new change of pace. Taking some of the ideas conceived on the tour, the band returned to Kelowna, locking themselves away for half a year to write new songs in a freezing cold jam space by the Okanagan Lake. It locking themselves away for half a year to write new songs in a freezing cold jam space by the Okanagan Lake. It was around this time that they partnered with long-time friend Nick Bernal of Nevado and began working towards releasing an album.

After some set-backs that year, including the head-on collision that ended the life of their van. The band aligned themselves with producer Shawn Cole (Bend Sinister, You Say Party! We Say Die!), and recorded the 14 songs they had written.

Four of these songs became the bands debut EFour of these songs became the bands debut EP "Everything in Everyway" (Nevado, 2009) which they released under the new moniker, Yukon Blonde. Soon after, they hit the road for a 37-date mostly Canadian tour including stops at POP Montreal, Halifax POP Explosion and CMJ.

The remaining 10 songs were then released as the band's self-titled debut LP (Bumstead Records). With over 80 shows in the first 6 months of 2010 - including showcases at SXSW, NYC, Chicago and L.A.- Yukon Blonde is currently busy touring North America in support of the album.

“It’s a wonderful mix of guitar-led intrigue, where Paul McCartney meets Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young – somehow without becoming a retro act.”

STEVE AZAR NEWS UPDATE

“Sunshine”, the new single from Steve Azar is climbing up the

radio charts. In fact, Billboard just announced that “Sunshine”

is the highest charting single on the “Country Radio Indicator

Chart”, from an independent label since 2006! It just hit #30 on

the Country Indicator Chart. The best news is that it still has

its chart bullet, and should be high in the 20’s or even in the

teens real soon! Sunshine is moving even faster than Steve’s

2003 smash “I don’t have to be til’ Monday” which peaked at #2

on the Billboard Country Singles chart! Fan reaction is great!

Single sales have grown at 20% per week since this song charted! Full line CD sales are growing steady!

The Whitsundays are the weird and wonderful musical brainchild of edmonton, Alberta’s Paul Arnusch (who also plays with dream-pop luminaries faunts). Their sophomore album Saul is a resplendent collection of vintage psychedelia and jangly pop, yet is also much darker and stranger than anything the Whitsundays have done before, calling as much upon the washed-out fuzziness of Ariel Pink as it does the pop melodies of the Zombies.

With their fourth (and best) album House of Tongues, new york’s elk city re-invent the seductive sophistication of 1970’s fM radio pop - but never shy away from their formidable rock power. The striking blend of rock, folk, soul and jazz on their newest release separates elk city from their peers in terms of ambition and expertise. not since the brilliant American Music club has a popular band so fully metabolized this range of influences to such masterful effect.
