TRANSCRIPT
5thGearTekes programme 2014–2019
Finland has a unique competence in the wireless area which can attract investments if the competence can be maintained
5G is being defined now – ensure Finland’s position in the game • Big players are participating in European and international activities to define
5G – otherwise participation is limited and thus supportive actions are needed
• Ensure sufficient participation of Finnish SMEs, universities, research institutes and start-ups to enable them to continue their successful innovation in the mobile communications area
Several disruptions and revolutions are expected to be part of 5G, opening possibilities for new players to enter the game
Finland needs a new and wide national research framework in wireless connectivity in order to maintain our competiveness, take back market share,
and attract continuing R&D investments
Rationale for the Finnish 5G programme
ICT has been the biggest single factor for the economical growth in Finland during the past 15 years, being responsible for 2/3 of the technology development behind the growth. It has created 40% of the GDP growth ..
Tekes GIGA (Converging Networks) programme 2005–2010• Wireless access systems, transparent networks, network support systems and
services, telecommunication business and network security
DIGILE Future Internet program 2008–2012• Leadership in Internet standardization, security and internet for LTE; seeds for
DIGILE IoT program
Tekes Trial (Cognitive Radio) programme 2011–2014• World first ASA trial, created a tight cooperation network among the players in
Finland, high quality international cooperation, good results and publicity
5thGear programme 2014–2019
Good national cooperation between companies and academia Strong support for int’l activities, standardization and EU programs
Creation of strong mobile broadband ecosystem including radio research, systems research and networking research
Successful History of Collaboration in Finland
E.g. in the GIGA programme approximately 1 000 patents were created, including many essential ones related to LTE. International collaboration took place in FP6/FP7 and standards contributions were made in IETF, ITU-R and IEEE.
”Suomi langattoman tietoliikenteen huippuosaamisen imussa digitalisaation
innovaatiojohtajaksi ja kansainvälisten investointien kärkikohteeksi”
”Finland to be the innovation leader in digitalization and to attract international investments by means of
wireless communications excellence”
Mission
Finland excels in 5G research that creates foundations for future business in global digital market extending the
traditional telecommunications market
A leading piloting-driven telecommunications hot-spot is established in Finland leveraging the collaboration
between Finnish and international players in the Finnish ecosystem
5G research and results enable innovations beyond telecommunications area creating new business
opportunities for Finnish companies
Vision
Piloting and demonstration driven world-class 5G research
Cross-industry collaboration, innovation and utilization

”Change to the 5thGear on the Digital Highway”
Telecommunications market is global, also business potential has to be considered globally
EITO (European Information Technology Observatory): • The global telecommunications market represents a size of 1 630 B€ in 2012 and
it has been growing in the last years• The biggest markets are the APAC region with 497 B€ followed by the US with
394 B€ and Europe with 354 B€• Compared with the global ICT market with a market volume of 2 646 B€ the
telecommunications market is still dominating (global IT market of 1 015 B€ compared to the global telecommunication market of 1 630 B€)
The ICT generates 5–6 % of the EU GDP and the telecommunications market 3.0–3.7 %, Finnish figures being approximately on the same level (in Finland the ICT level was almost 10 % in 2002)
Through digitalization and the general convergence of industries, the impact and business potential is expected to be even wider in the future both globally and in Finland
Business Potential
”Using current solutions the battery of a terminal device will be drained in about 3 minutes in a 5G network environment”
Real-time remote monitoring and car-to-car communications require low latency and high reliability
80–90 % of traffic will be video/TV streaming in the next few years, causing network congestion
Number of devices on the net is expected to be 50 BN by 2020 – far beyond the current network capability
