From the From the From the From the Deacon's LaptopDeacon's LaptopDeacon's LaptopDeacon's Laptop:::: Encounter the Joy of the Gospel (Continued)
Last week in the From the Deacon’s Laptop, the discussion continued on Chapter 1 (The Missionary Nature of the
Church: A Call to All the Faithful) of the Diocese’s Five Year Pastoral Plan – Encounter the Joy of the Gospel – Set
the World Ablaze and “What is ‘new’ about the New Evangelization?” For this week, the discussion continues in Chapter 1 and focus on overview of “How do we proceed in this work?”. How do we proceed? Five lenses through which to plan and evaluate The Diocesan Plan tells us: “to incorporate an explicit emphasis on the New Evangelization into diocesan and parish life, it is fitting to ask where it fits within the framework of ‘We Walk by Faith’, the previous Diocesan Plan”. During the last several years the Diocese has been using the biblical categories of Word, Worship, Service, and Community as a framework to analyze our diocese and our parishes. The focus on the New Evangelization must be explicit. It has its own unique characteristics that also have a biblical basis. For those two reasons, explicit attention and unique characteristics, this document adds a fifth category of “Witness” to the four already in use to guide parish life and work. The challenge implicit in this choice is both to weave elements of the New Evangelization into each of the other four categories and at the same time, to recognize the very explicit nature of Witness. All five of these offices of the church are visible in the model Jesus gives in the resurrection appearance to the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Jesus helps the disciples to understand how the events in Jerusalem fit within God’s saving plan (Word). He listens to them in their grief (Service). Jesus is revealed to them in the breaking of the bread (Worship). Community is created when they prevail upon Him to stay with them. Finally, they rush back to share what they have experienced (Witness). This gospel can provide a rich model for us as we seek to live out the New Evangelization within our own diocese and parish. The lens of Witness is now the primary lens for all parish life and work. The degree to which individuals and parishes embrace Jesus’ call to a new and higher mind, and the degree to which they yearn, as Jesus did, to draw all people to Himself in One Body is the degree to which Jesus’ call to go and make disciples is being carried out. Further, Jesus makes it clear the weakest among any community are the most in need of His witnesses. Further, the Lord yearns for all who have wandered to come home, to hear His voice, and to commune with Him. The Lord came to proclaim good news to the poor. And today, Pope Francis is leading the entire Church toward a joyful journey of faith, challenging all the faithful to seek change within and then allow that change to become an offer of rest and comfort to those who are weary. We are called by Jesus to this New Evangelization and to spread His word throughout our family, the community, the world and primarily within ourselves.

Parishioners of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church:
There is a disastrous bill starting to wind its way through the Richmond Legislature. The Attorney
General of Virginia, newly elected Mark Herring has turned his back on the expressed wishes of the
citizens of this commonwealth and has vowed to do everything in his power to overturn the ban on
same sex marriage in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He has sworn that he will NOT defend this
constitutional amendment and WILL instead join the plaintiffs to actively oppose it in pending litigation,
this move is unheard of in Virginia politics.
This is the very same bill he voted for while serving as a State Senator in 2006.
AG Mark Herring will not only decline to defend the state constitution without appointing an outside
counsel, which is very unusual for the state's top attorney, his decision to actively challenge the states'
definition of marriage is shocking and reckless. Much has been written already about the responsibility
attorneys general have to defend state laws, whether they agree with those laws or not.
We join others in calling on Herring to do the job he was elected to do.
This is why the Pro-Life Officers of the Knights and of the Parish are calling on everyone to send
an email or make a phone call to your State Delegate and/or State Senator to vote AGAINST this
movement building within our State Legislature.

SAINTS PETER AND PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, PALMYRA, VA FEBRUARY 08-09, 2014
Our work started in January 2012, following the Uganda mission of Bob Maher, a member of the Knights
of Columbus from our parish. Bob visited St. Francis of Assisi Parish, where he was touched by a story
told of people in this area who die of sicknesses that could be treated. Unfortunately, they could not get
to the hospital because it was many miles away and the transportation means are poor. When he
returned home to Palmyra, he began to look for funds to build a medical facility for the people of
Kitakyusa.
Front view of St. Francis Church Groundbreaking ceremony in January
Fundraising started with the Knights then grew to include the parishioners of Sts. Peter and Paul and St.
Josephs, who have greatly supported this project. The funds that have been raised were used to start
work on a building. In January 2013, Bob Maher, David Kimbell, and myself participated in the
groundbreaking ceremony.

At first the clinic was estimated to cost $ 37,000, which, unfortunately, was not enough money.
