TRANSCRIPT
THIRD ANNOUNCEMENT & CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
8-11 OCTOBER 2019 ANKARA, TURKEY
METU Cultural and Convention Center
5th International Conference on Earthquake Engineering
and Seismology
On behalf of the Earthquake Engineering Association of
Turkey (EEAT), it is my great honour to invite you to the
5th International Conference on Earthquake Engineering
and Seismology (5ICEES), which will be held during 8-11
October 2019 at Middle East Technical University (METU)
Culture and Convention Center. The organization will be
hosted by METU Civil Engineering Department.
In Turkey, seismic risk is becoming a more serious issue
with ever increasing building stock, especially in big cities.
In addition to this continous increase, the building stock is
also getting older and more vulnerable to seismic action.
Accordingly, the aim of this conference is not only to present
the recent research studies in earthquake engineering and
seismology, but also to discuss the current earthquake
related problems and to exchange ideas for their potential
solutions.
In the fields of earthquake engineering and seismology, the
role of novel methodologies, new construction technologies
and smart techniques is becoming more and more
important in order to identify seismic hazard and risk in a
more realistic manner, to develop a brand new earthquake
resistant design philosophy and to handle vast number of
seismically vulnerable existing structures. To this extent,
another aim of the conference is to assist the exhibition
and introduction of the new technologies in the area and to
share this knowledge with all the participants.
We are looking forward to your participation and support to
this conference, which will be held in Ankara, the capital city
with a unique cultural and historical wealth.
Best Regards,
Prof. Dr. Haluk Sucuoğlu
President of EEAT
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF EEAT
5th International Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology 8-11 October 2019, Ankara, Turkey
/ 5icees
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to announce that the 5th International
Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology
(5ICEES) will be hosted by Middle East Technical University
(METU) Civil Engineering Department. The conference will
be held in Ankara, Turkey at METU Culture and Convention
Center during 8-11 October, 2019.
The International Conference on Earthquake Engineering
and Seismology is organized every two years since 2011 by
the Earthquake Engineering Association of Turkey (EEAT).
The principal aim is to gather all national and international
researchers in order to discuss current problems regarding
the earthquake phenomenon, exchange ideas for the
possible solutions in short and long term and to facilitate
their participation in a scientific environment. Since we
have started this journey as a national conference at METU,
Ankara in 2011, there has been an ever increasing interest
to the conference from Turkey and abroad with high-
quality contributions to the current research in the fields
of earthquake engineering and seismology. We hope this
interest will grow even more and we experience a succesful
conference with a considerable number of participants.
During the first three days of the conference, presentations
and discussions will be organized through parallel sessions
with the participants from numerous universities, research
units, governing bodies and private sector companies
worldwide. Each session will focus on a particular theme.
The participants can present their work both in English and
in Turkish.
The last day of the conference is dedicated to a special
workshop honoring the retirement of Prof. Haluk Sucuoğlu
(METU). Distinguished international and national
researchers are invited to this one-day event to give their
compelling talks regarding different aspects of earthquake
engineering and seismology.
Further details about the conference and important
deadlines will be provided in the future calls. We look
forward to hosting you next year at METU, Ankara.
Best Regards,
On Behalf of the 5ICEES Organizing Committee

Turkey’s ‘other’ city may not have showy
Ottoman palaces or regal facades, but Ankara
thrums to a vivacious, youthful beat unmarred
by the tug of history. Drawing comparisons
with İstanbul is pointless – the flat, modest
surroundings are hardly the stuff of national
poetry – but the civic success of this dynamic
city is assured thanks to student panache and
foreign-embassy intrigue.
The country’s capital has made remarkable
progress from a dusty Anatolian backwater to
today’s sophisticated arena for international
affairs. Turkey’s economic success is
reflected in the booming restaurant scene
around Kavaklıdere and the ripped-jean politik
of Kızılay’s sidewalk cafes, frequented by hip
students, old-timers and businessmen a like.
and while the vibrant street life is enough
of a reason to visit, Ankara also boasts two
extraordinary monuments central to the
Turkish story – the beautifully conceived
Museum of Anatolian Civilisations and the
Anıt Kabir, a colossal tribute to Atatürk, modern
Turkey’s founder.
Regarding top sides in Ankara you may visit
Museum of Anatolian Civilisations, Anıtkabir
(Atatürk’s Mausoleum), Ethnography Museum,
Hacı Bayram Mosque, Ankara Castle, Atakule.
