A point is a basic term used ingeometry. You might think of it as

a dot on a piece of paper. It is

usually identified with a capitalletter or number. It has no length

or width. It is used to name an

    exact location in space.

A line is like the line that we might draw

with a ruler. It extends forever in both

    directions.

It is named by two points on the line.

This line can be called Line ABor Line

    BA.

A line segmentis like the line that we

might draw with a ruler. It does not

extend forever in both directions. It

    has two distinct endpoints.

    R

    S

It is named by two points on the line. This line segment can be called Line

    segment RSor Line segment SR.

A rayis a straight line that begins at one

point and extends forever in only onedirection.

    A

It is named by two points on the ray. Thefirst letter mustbe the endpoint. This ray

    canonlybe called Ray AB.

The supports for this building are intersecting lines.

Many bridges use intersecting lines to help

    support them.

    Highway intersections are often

    perpendicular.

  • 8/11/2019 5th Gr. Geometry 1

    23/32

    Bridge supports areoften placed in

    perpendicular lines.

  • 8/11/2019 5th Gr. Geometry 1

    24/32

    Fence supports are

    perpendicular to the other

    sections.

  • 8/11/2019 5th Gr. Geometry 1

    25/32

    Frames of buildings

    use perpendicularlines.

    26/32

Parallel linesare lines that are equidistant

from each other and will never intersect.

    The center

    lines of a

    road are

    parallellines. The

    two sides of

    the roadway

    are parallel.

  • 8/11/2019 5th Gr. Geometry 1

    29/32

The fence supports are placed parallel to each

other. The slats of the walkway are parallel.

    30/32

The columns supporting this building are placed

    parallel to each other.

  • 8/11/2019 5th Gr. Geometry 1

    31/32

Many bridges use parallels to support or

    suspend bridges.

The stripes on our flag are parallel to each other.
