As a non-profit theater company supported by the community, we enjoy the patronage of more than 25,000 season subscribers (one of the largest theater subscriptions in America). More than 300,000 audience members attend our performances each year.

OUR HISTORIC THEATER

A beautiful Seattle landmark, The 5th Avenue Theatre’s breathtaking design was inspired by ancient Imperial China’s most stunning architectural achievements, including the magnificent Forbidden City. Built in 1926 for vaudeville and silent pictures, The 5th Avenue Theatre reigned for decades as Seattle’s favorite movie palace. In 1979, 43 companies and community leaders formed the non-profit 5th Avenue Theatre Association. Their goal was to restore the theater to its original splendor. The 5th Avenue Theatre re-opened in 1980 as Seattle’s premier home for musical theater.

The 5th Avenue Theatre gratefully acknowledges our 43 original founders and sponsors. Please visit www.5thavenue.org for specific information on these important companies and individuals.

One of the Puget Sound’s Leading Exports:Musical Theater!

David ArmstrongExecutive Producer and Artistic Director

Is there something in the waters of the Puget Sound that inspires creativity? Our region has long been a

hotbed of all kinds of invention and innovation – from airplanes, to technology, to coffee our state has pioneered new ways of thinking and then exported those ideas across the globe.

I am happy to tell you that our region is also acclaimed as a leading creator and exporter of new Musical Theater. In fact, over the next few months four musicals that began their life on our stage will take the stages of other theaters all over America and around the world.

On October 23 our Tony Award®-winning musical MEMPHIS will open at London’s prestigious Shaftesbury Theatre in its first international production. This thrilling and moving show premiered here at The 5th in 2009 (in a co-production with La Jolla Playhouse) prior to its two-year run on Broadway and subsequent national tour. And rumor has it that a major film adaptation will be announced in the very near future!

Then in November our musical FIRST DATE will debut in Japan! We staged the world premiere of this hilarious musical comedy in 2012 as a co-production presented at ACT – A Contemporary Theatre, and the following season it opened on Broadway. During this coming theater season you will be able to enjoy productions of FIRST DATE in Houston; Tampa; Miami; Fort Myers; Phoenix; Coeur D’Alene, ID; and Juarez, Mexico!

Four years ago we premiered A CHRISTMAS STORY. This delightful show went on to Broadway where it become a smash hit and received three 2013 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical. This coming holiday season, in addition to our own triumphant return engagement here at The 5th, this crowd-pleasing musical will be seen in more than 40 productions in

And of course Disney’s ALADDIN, which received its world premiere on our stage in 2011, continues as one of Broadway’s biggest hits at New York’s legendary New Amsterdam Theater where it stars three more of our region’s brightest exports – Brandon O’Neill, Nikki Long, and Don Darryl Rivera.

We are very proud that audiences everywhere now have the opportunity to experience these amazing musicals. And you should be proud too. The loyalty and dedication of our subscribers, single ticket buyers and donors are what has made this all possible. You are a part of these shows when and wherever they are performed.

Kinky Boots, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, was created by a dream team of talented and original artists; pop icon Cyndi Lauper, who won a Tony for her infectious score, four-time Tony-winning librettist Harvey Fierstein, and director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who also took home a Tony for his dances. “Because we’re all different, we brought in what we know and we all worked together to make it right – to make you laugh and cry,” says Lauper. “Harvey is such a good storyteller and so is Jerry. They have a lot of heart and I feel very blessed to be among them.”

Based on an independent film inspired by true events, Kinky

Boots tells the story of Charlie, the owner of a failing English shoe factory, teaming up with Lola, a drag artist, to serve a niche market – making sturdy boots for cross-dressers. But a successful Broadway show – and, make no mistake, Kinky Boots is a huge hit – is anything but a niche market – it needs to speak to a wide and diverse audience. Jerry Mitchell says he knew the musical would speak to a lot of people, the moment he watched the film. “I got very emotionally caught up in the story of the fathers and the sons,” he says. “And I thought, “well that to me is the nucleus of something really strong,” because it’s a universal idea for us: how do we measure up in our fathers’ eyes?”

That’s certainly the way producer Daryl Roth felt when she first saw the film at Sundance in 2006. Within a year, she had optioned the musical rights and brought producer Hal Luftig on board. The two enlisted not only Mitchell, but playwright Harvey Fierstein, who says he was attracted to the intimate story at the center; the “bromance” between Charlie and Lola, a.k.a. Simon. “The real love story here is these two gentlemen who become friends,” says Fierstein. “And I thought it was a good opportunity to do this realistically.” He was also attracted to the theme of self-acceptance, which translates not just to the two lead characters, but all the workers in the factory: “It’s the human stories; that’s what theater’s for.”

Page 11: 5th Avenue Theatre: Kinky Boots_Encore Arts Seattle

Fierstein called Lauper, who he had known socially. She was drawn to the project, as well: “It’s a story about an outsider.” Lauper enthusiastically signed on and she, Fierstein and Mitchell began a four and a half year creative odyssey to translate Kinky Boots to the stage. “I don’t keep track,” explains Mitchell. “Time to me is not the point. Getting it right is the point.”

Cyndi Lauper, who grew up listening to Rodgers and Hammerstein cast albums, took to writing for characters and dramatic situations, like a duck to water. “Everybody asks the question about pop songs and theater songs,” she says. “I just think that, in some ways, they’re very similar; and in other ways, they’re not. You need to be economical; you have to say something simply. And you have to have your story – a beginning, middle and end – because if the song goes nowhere, well, what are you talking about?”

Harvey Fierstein, a veteran of several musicals, including the smash hit La Cage aux Folles, gave Lauper an education in writing for the theater. “Her lessons were a lot of fun for me,” he says, “frustrating sometimes, but fun, on the other hand.” In particular, he showed Lauper how to weave music and dialogue effectively, something she resisted at first. Fierstein told her, “when it’s done right, you will never notice, but the show must move on.” A perfect example is the

elaborate and catchy opening sequence, “The Most Beautiful Thing in the World,” which they crafted with Jerry Mitchell. Fierstein explains, “that tells the story of all the characters, in relationship to shoes. Everyone in that opening number is defined by a pair of shoes and you know who they are.”

Although the show is mostly set in the workaday world of a shoe factory, the dream team wanted to create a sense of joy and uplift for the audience, in the way only a Broadway musical can do. The first act finale, “Everybody Say Yeah,” is an explosion of energy. Mitchell has the cast dancing on moving conveyor belts, which had been used to deliver shoes earlier in the musical. “We had so much fun creating that number,” exclaims Mitchell, “because it is a celebration of making the first pair of kinky boots and everyone in the factory gets involved.”

And the show’s final numbers, “Raise You Up/ Just Be” literally does that to the audience every night. “They’re standing up, cheering, dancing and singing,” says Jerry Mitchell. “And they don’t want to leave the theater! That’s sort of a magical moment. And then, when they do walk out of the theater, you know, they’re all abuzz. That’s the kind of joy that is rare in a musical.”

In a show called Kinky Boots, “you’ve gotta get the boots right,” says Gregg Barnes, costume and footwear designer for the Tony Award-winning musical. The show, based on a real story and independent film, about a failing English shoe factory which turned its fortunes around by niche-marketing sturdy boots for drag artists, has become a sold-out Broadway phenomenon. With a book by Harvey Fierstein and a Tony winning score by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots relies heavily on its visual designs, and, of course, those boots by Barnes.

The designer says it was quite a challenge to create those thigh-high boots, with six inch stiletto heels. “What’s really funny about our experience with Kinky Boots is that my team, and the cobblers who made the boots, we had the exact same story as in the musical,” explains Barnes. “Everything they talk about in terms of reinforcing the heel and all of that stuff, we had the same learning curve!” Those boots need to be durable to support the six-foot tall

dancers doing elaborate and joyous dance routines. Says Barnes: ” We’re asking them to do slam splits and quick changes, being carted up and down stairs in baskets. And we have to make them look as if they’re brand new every night, but survive eight shows a week.” Barnes adds that, after months of experimentation and broken heels, they ultimately came up with designs that are so reliable, they’ve barely had to replace any boots in the musical’s Broadway run of over a year.

And Barnes says he never tires of experiencing the enthusiasm audiences have shown for both his kinky boots and the show itself. “You know, it’s amazing,” says Barnes. “You can feel it walking into that theater. I think the audience comes so primed to have this joyous experience and it always rewards that.”

Brandon Ivie is constantly in motion – whether from idea to idea, project to project, or coast to coast, the talented young artist is a meteorite hurtling through space. Sitting next to him, you can practically feel him vibrating with ideas, passion, and the creativity of an artist – an energy he is bringing back to The 5th Avenue stage. A blooming Broadway talent and a permanent fixture of the Seattle arts scene, Ivie will find himself in the director’s seat at The 5th this winter as he – and the runaway hit A Christmas Story, The Musical – come home for the holidays.

Ivie is no stranger to this musical. As the casting associate at The 5th, he sat through hundreds of auditions from youngsters around Puget Sound and discovered Clarke Hallum, who would play Ralphie not only at The 5th, but on the cast album and the national tour that landed the Tony-nominated show a spot on Broadway for the holidays in 2012 (not to mention a return engagement in 2013 at Madison Square Garden). “It was actually one of my proudest memories,” he recently recalled. “He was a really special talent!”

Ivie continued with the show on Broadway as the assistant director. “Broadway is surprisingly similar to working at The 5th!” Ivie recalls. When asked about the show itself and the changes it has undergone, he reassures friends and fans “The show has the same heart, and the plot is the same.” Framed by the simple beauty of Jean Shepherd’s brilliant narration, A Christmas Story returns to The 5th complete with stunning and vivid new choreography, not to mention a brand new song you won’t want to miss.

As for being at home for the holidays, Ivie could not be more thrilled. “Coincidentally,” Ivie laughs, “A huge tradition in my family is Chinese food on Christmas Eve – which is totally unrelated to the Chinese food scene in A Christmas Story. The tradition goes back to my grandparents. My grandma would work so hard to make the Christmas Day meal and my grandpa didn’t want her to also have to make a Christmas Eve meal. So he took the family to Chinese food. It’s an Ivie family tradition that’s been going on for more than 60 years!”

David Armstrong,Executive Producer & Artistic Director“From the beginning of time every human culture has been compelled to create theater as a way to better understand the world and their place in it. Acting is one of the oldest professions and music has played a major part in every culture’s theatrical forms. There is something primal about it. And I think the reason that our great American invention, ‘The Musical’, has had so much impact is that it is the closest to replicating that primal instinct.”

Musical Theater can take many forms and represent different things. It can be a form of escape and entertainment inside the doors of a theater and away from the realities of the world. Many shows give the opportunity to delve deeper into relevant topics and important issues. As Scott Miller, Artistic Director of New Line Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri wrote, “How can I discuss Assassins or Cabaret without talking about politics? How can I discuss Les Misérables or Carousel or Ragtime without talking about social issues? And why would I want to? Any good musical – or play or movie or novel, for that matter – is about important issues, either on the surface or more subtextually, and there’s no reason to pretend otherwise. Instead of shying away from this fact, we should celebrate it. Musical Theater isn’t some ancient, dusty, irrelevant invalid; it’s a thriving, vigorous art form that gives us an exciting forum in which to talk about our world and try to figure things out. After all, why bother doing Carousel or Camelot if its issues don’t speak to our times as well as to its own?”

I think all of us here at The 5th would heartily agree that we should heed the advice to see more musicals! They are indeed good for you. Tony Award ®-winning director and former Artistic Director of Intiman Playhouse, Bartlett Sher describes the musical theater experience saying:

Bernadine C. Griffin,Managing Director“Musical Theater tells a story with music, dance and the spoken word – a total immersion of the senses, like no other art form. Most people’s first exposure to the arts is through musical theater. That is one of the many things I love about the art form; it is one of inclusion. There’s room for everybody – from the most sophisticated palate to the first-timers, a musical can be seen through different lenses. Each person can witness the same show and have a unique and meaningful experience.”

Bill Berry,Producing Artistic Director“Musical Theater is powerful, it moves people, it offers joy and hope. It can tell a story in such a dynamic and surprising way – and all of this happens while an audience is entertained. South Pacific, West Side Story, Hairspray – these are not only powerful stories that explore complicated issues and help us to understand the world we live in, but they are also highly entertaining experiences that transport audiences. I have had some very cathartic experiences watching musical theater – moments that have helped me become a better human being, moments where life was not particularly good (the kind we all have) and sitting in a theater watching a show has moved me and allowed me to walk out into the world refreshed, renewed and ready to start again. This is ultimately the power of good theater – it helps us to remember our humanity.

See more musicals – they’re good for you!”

( Why Do )

(?)

Musical Theater draws people together and offer a common experience that is unique and somewhat uncommon in today’s plugged-in world. It is an art form that can appeal to and speak to anybody. It can be the first step into a world of the arts for many, who when given a taste, will have revealed to them a multitude of other creative releases from music to dance, storytelling to fashion. Musicals mean different things to different people. Why do we, here at The 5th devote our lives to this? Our executive leadership shares with us here why musicals matter to them.

Consider this your invitation to join us here at The 5th, again and again. Enjoy the community and experience your humanity through this amazing art form.

“It’s a way of being with other human beings, it’s the only place you can be without looking at your phone, it has an ancient campfire quality. No matter how fast our consciousness is getting, we still have a primitive longing to sit around the campfire and listen to someone tell a story or sing or play an instrument. It is still an important human activity.”

SHOW BRICKSSTEP BACKSTAGE AT THE 5TH AVENUE THEATRE, into the “pass-through” behind the stage (a hallway that connects stage right with stage left), and you are greeted with an array of bricks decorated with show logos, signatures, painted caricatures, and sometimes even 3D embellishments. These are the show bricks – a tribute to each cast that has trod the boards at The 5th and contributed to our incredible legacy of musical theater.

The bricks date back to 1980 and the national tour of Annie – the very first show to play at the theater after local business owners took it upon themselves to raise funds to save and renovate the aging playhouse. Legend has it that “Sandy,” Annie’s dog, lifted his leg on the wall backstage. The stain left on the wall can be seen to this day with the autograph “Love, Sandy” contributed by crew member Joe Poc. The cast felt that if Sandy got to leave his “mark,” then so did the rest of them. And so a tradition was born!

It began with simple signatures on a brick that grew into beautiful painted renditions of the logos. But as the easily accessible wall space began to fill up and the existing signatures on the porous bricks began to fade, our creative casts began to take these bricks to the next level.

With every production, a cast member is selected to create the brick. He or she is given a brick-sized piece of wood to paint, decorate, and embellish in whatever way is appropriate for the show, and the rest of the cast contributes signatures. At the end of each show, the new “brick” is mounted onto the wall, taking its place among the many productions that have made our theater a home to artists and audiences alike.

For each show in our season, The 5th Avenue’s Education department presents special workshops for high school students with an interest in musical theater. Each Fridays at The 5th workshop is designed to inspire students, even those with little or no theater background, and to create a meaningful theater-going experience through workshops and interaction with theater professionals. During each workshop, students have the opportunity to learn about the themes, history and background of the shows on our stage and engage in workshops taught by professional actors, directors, music directors and choreographers. Workshop topics cover a variety of subjects including acting through song and movement as emotional expression, as well as historical events and social themes that have inspired a show’s creators. During a recent Fridays at The 5th workshop for A Chorus Line, students were taught by Broadway performer Chryssie Whitehead who played the character of Cassie in our production.

“I love to help anyone willing to find joy and freedom in movement and dance, regardless of their ability and level,” said Whitehead. Students learned the choreography from the show and also learned about the show’s creators, Michael Bennett, Marvin Hamlisch, Edward Kleban, James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante. “I loved every minute of the workshop and watched the show with a whole new perspective,” said one enthusiastic participant.

Following each workshop, the students enjoy a pizza party and then attend the show. There is always a post show talkback with members of the cast, crew and musicians.

The registration fee for each event is $25 per student and includes the workshop, dinner, one ticket to the performance, and the talkback. The 5th Avenue Theatre is committed to keeping the cost of attending Fridays at The 5th affordable so that these events are accessible to as many students as possible. Our objective is to introduce as many young people as we can to professional musical theatre and to foster a lifelong habit of attending live theater.

Are you one of those patrons who has found your way down the long stairs under the marquee to The 5th Avenue Theatre’s Show Talks with Albert Evans? We hope so! Sponsored by MACY’S with additional support from KING FM, our FREE thought-provoking pre-show events take place one hour prior to curtain before each Tuesday and Wednesday evening main stage performance.

These entertaining and educational Show Talks are hosted by Albert Evans, The 5th Avenue’s Artistic and Music Associate. As a composer, dramaturg, and music director – among many other talents – Albert brings delightful insight to each Show Talk.

For each show in the mainstage season, Albert presents engaging and entertaining pre-show discussions about the themes, history, or the show’s creators, to further enhance the experience of seeing the productions. Often Albert is joined by guest speakers, including professors from local universities, as well as some of our favorite local performers. Show Talks have featured local activists working for social justice, nationally known authors such as Stephanie Coontz, and local radio personalities such as Feliks Banel and Marta Zekan. In addition, Show Talks have welcomed local and national designers, directors, writers, composers and producers, including costume designer Gregg Barnes, book writer Quiara Alegria Hudes, producers Marleen and Kenny Alhadeff, and composer Alan Menken, all of whom have won Tony awards for their work on Broadway.

“I love to help anyone willing to find joy and freedom in movement and dance, regardless of their ability and level.”

-Broadway and 5th Avenue Performer Chryssie Whitehead

For more information on Fridays at The 5th, visit: www.5thavenue.org/education

For many shows, patrons have the unique opportunity to hear directly from the people who have created the worlds on our stage! Choreographers, designers, directors, and more have joined Albert to give us the “backstage scoop” at Show Talks. With wit and their incredible knowledge of stagecraft, these talented folk graciously bring you into their process – and often give you a chance to ask your own questions about our 5th Avenue productions. As one patron said, “I most liked the chance to meet those that are involved in the production and to understand exactly what part they play to make the production so successful!!”

NEW! This season we welcome KING FM on-air personality, Marta Zekan, on select Thursdays, to share her knowledge in conversation with Albert. You won’t want to miss the interaction between these two fantastic musical theater aficionados!

Come early on your way to the show, or feel free to drop by any time. Discover for yourself these educational and entertaining pre-show events.

DAVID ARMSTRONG (Executive Producer and Artistic Director) Since his appointment in 2000, Armstrong has guided The 5th Avenue to a position as one of the nation’s leading musical theater companies, acclaimed for both its development and production of new works and its innovative stagings of classic musicals. As a director, he has created memorable 5th Avenue productions of A Room with a View, Oliver!, Candide, Hello, Dolly!, Sweeney Todd, White Christmas, Hair, Mame, A Little Night Music, The Secret Garden, Anything Goes, Company, The Rocky Horror

Show, Pippin, Vanities, Yankee Doodle Dandy!, and Saving Aimee, which made its Broadway debut as Scandalous under Armstrong’s direction in November 2012. Prior to The 5th, he spent nearly 20 years as a freelance director, choreographer, and librettist. His work has been seen in New York, Los Angeles and at many leading regional theaters including The Kennedy Center, Ordway Center, Ford’s Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse, and New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. From 1990 through 1995, he served as artistic director of Cohoes Music Hall in upstate NY. Armstrong has also written the books for the musicals The Wonder Years (winner of seven Drama-Logue Awards), Gold Rush, and Yankee Doodle Dandy!

BERNADINE (BERNIE) C. GRIFFIN (Managing Director) was appointed managing director in January 2010 and is responsible for the administrative, fundraising, information services and facility operations, as well as oversight of all activities related to the Board of Directors. Griffin first joined the Theatre in 2002 as director of theater advancement and development. During her tenure, The 5th Avenue has grown from a $10 million to a $25 million organization. She brings to her position 30 years of fundraising and arts management experience.

Prior to The 5th Avenue, she served as director of development for the prestigious Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, as well as for The Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach, California. Before moving to California, she served at the Seattle Symphony where she is proud to have been part of the team that built Benaroya Hall. In addition to the Symphony, Griffin worked for the Tony Award-winning Seattle Repertory Theatre, as well as Tony Randall’s National Actors Theatre in New York. She began her career at the University of Denver. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington and is proud to have been born and raised in Walla Walla, Washington. She is a member of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre and a board member of Seattle Rotary #4. Most recently, she served as a grants panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts. Griffin was named one of the Puget Sound Business Journal’s 2013 Women of Influence. She is married to award-winning actor Seán G. Griffin.

BILL BERRY (Producing Artistic Director) served as The 5th Avenue’s associate producing artistic director and casting director from 2002 through 2009. During that time, he directed productions of West Side Story (Seattle Times Footlight Award), Wonderful Town (Seattle Times Footlight Award), Wizard of Oz and Smokey Joe’s Café. He recently made his Broadway debut as the director of the hit musical First Date at the Longacre Theatre. Berry’s directing work has been seen at theaters across the country, most recently at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Play house where

he directed a critically acclaimed production of On the Town. Directing highlights include Cabaret performed at The 5th Avenue Theatre, St. Paul’s Ordway Center (Ivey Award), San Jose’s American Musical Theatre, and Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars, as well as the smash hits First Date and RENT at The 5th. From 2002 to 2009, he served as the producing director for The 5th Avenue’s education and outreach programs. During that time he significantly expanded the scope and impact of these initiatives, including spearheading the creation of Fridays at The 5th and The 5th Avenue Awards, honoring excellence in high school musical theater, as well as substantially increasing the reach of the Adventure Musical Theatre Touring Company throughout the Northwest. These programs combined now serve 60,000 students annually. He also initiated the Show Talk series, which seeks to deepen the theater-going experience. Prior to his work at The 5th Avenue Theatre, Berry was a freelance theater artist based in New York City.
