Dear ASFC members and 2016 Conclave Participants,

The hosting and preparation of the 59th annual conclave started back in September of 2014 and continued all

the way up through the Thursday that each of your teams arrived. If you were to ask me if there were times within that

period that I thought Conclave may not have been pulled off, I would be lying to tell you no. It can be difficult to cover

up your own worries in order keep your team motivated and excited about hosting… But to see the execution of yet

another great Conclave made all of the time and effort worth it! Hosting this year’s Conclave not only took participation

from Clemson’s faculty and Staff, it took the entire community coming together to showcase our school and our town to

its highest degree. A special thanks goes out to all of our sponsors for not only monetary donations but donations of time,

equipment, and materials needed for hosting. I would like for everyone to recognize all of the hard work and dedication

that our students, faculty, alumni, and surrounding community put in to hosting this event.

Having been to Conclave each of my previous three years here at Clemson, I had some good examples to go by

for how to successfully host a Conclave. The best lesson to learn first, is how to pray for good weather! I truly enjoyed

the experience of learning the real ins and outs of hosting an event of this magnitude. A lot of the “behind the scenes”

work lead to myself and our students getting to know a lot of our faculty on a much stronger basis than Professor or

Lecturer. Hosting this event also brought a much stronger brotherhood bond to our club. I can leave the club to our

underclassmen knowing that they will instill this same connection to the classes to come.

I would like to thank all of the students and faculty from each school that attended this year’s conclave. It was

the comradery and fellowship of this year’s conclave that I will remember and continue to tell about for years to come. I

will also remember an environment of fierce competition but also an environment of teams pulling together to be sure

that everyone had a fair chance at each event. Conclave has given all of our schools an invaluable opportunity not only to

meet, but build relationships with soon to be Forestry Professionals that we will continue to interact with in our field for

the remainder of our careers.

With that, I would like to congratulate all of the award winners of each event. I strongly encourage each team to

continue practicing and to continue building so that we may see this tradition carried on for yet another 59 years. I hope

you all have had as much fun as I have in Clemson, South Carolina! I also wish Stephen F. Austin the best in hosting next

year’s 60th Annual Association of Southern Forestry Clubs Conclave.

Jesse Burdett

President of Clemson Forestry Club
