Light up the HolidaysOne of the great childhood Christmas memories is driving around the neighbor-hoods to look at the Christmas lights. Friends, neighbors, family would string and drape lights on every bush and tree. You could also glimpse those free floating Santa heads on the front door or light post. Sometimes you would hear about a really fantastic display where every house on a street or in a neighbor-hood would try to outdo each other. You just had to go see it. So, between now and Christmas take some time, pile in the car and go on a self-guided tour of St. Louis neighborhoods Christmas light displays. Or, for those who want a re-ally big time light display then you might want to check out the following.

U.S. Bank Wild Lights at Saint Louis Zoo brings Watts of Holiday Fun. Wander through the Zoo’s dazzling winter wildland, and enjoy thousands of colorful lights and sea-sonal sounds. You’ll be enchanted by whimsical light displays including a snowflake flurry walk, poppin’ prairie dogs, an illuminated penguin colony, a fantasy butterfly garden and charming gingerbread village, festive locomo-tive, flamboyant flamingos, and numerous trees ablaze in lights. Plus, fireside storytelling, live choirs, crafts for kids, Penguin & Puffin Coast and the Insec-tarium. wild Lights runs through Friday, Dec 30 the St. Lois Zoo in Forest Park. For complete information please visit www.stlzoo.org

For 26 years, employees with the St. Louis County Parks Department have turned Tilles Park into a Winter Wonderland. “Powered By Energizer” Winter Wonderland is cre-ated and designed by St. Louis County Parks Em-ployees as a gift for the

public to enjoy during this Holiday Season. You can drive through the display, but the best way to see the lights is by horse-drawn carriage. Cars are wel-come Sunday through Friday, but Saturdays are reserved for carriage rides. Winter Wonderland runs through New Year’s Eve December 31, 2011 and is open daily from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., except for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. For complete information and to plan your visit please go to the web site at www.stlouisco.com/ParksandRecreation

In the Middle Ages, Christmas celebrations were rowdy and raucous, a lot like today's Mardi Gras parties.

From 1659 to 1681, the celebration of Christmas was out-lawed in Boston, and law-breakers were fined five shillings.

Christmas wasn't a holiday in early America—in fact Congress was in session on December 25, 1789, the country's first Christmas under the new constitution.Construction workers started the Rockefeller Center

Christmas tree tradition in 1931.

The Salvation Army has been sending Santa Claus-clad donation collectors into the streets since the 1890s.

Christmas was declared a federal holiday in the united States on June 26, 1870.
