Location: US 60 E for approximately 5 miles and turn left on Rocky Creek Ln (603). Proceed 0.2 miles to
the second driveway on the right. Continue on this lane through WESTVACO property for 0.4 miles then
turn left on a short gravel lane. The cemetery is in sight straight ahead. (If one exits the pine grove, one
has gone too far). There are at least 6 gravesites marked by fieldstone. Maintained.

Location: U s 29 S for a little more than 6.3 miles to Patrick Henry Hwy (151) on the left. Turn left on to
Patrick Henry Highway and travel 2.8 miles to Geddes Mountain Rd(662) on the right. Continue on
Geddes Mtn. Rd for 1.3 miles to Jefferson’s Tr (700) on the left. Travel on to Jefferson’s Tr for .2 miles
to the driveway to Geddes. (Sign on right hand post of drive). Continue down the drive toward the house.
The brick masonary walled cemetery is to the left of the house, through a hay field and just below and
beyond a group of cedar trees. You will enjoy the sight of “The Priest” in the distance. Well fenced and
wrought iron gated. In addition to inscribed stones there are 9 fieldstone markers.
Large, rough cut memorial monument stone reads “ In loving memory of George Mason Claiborne, July
4, 1853 – January 21, 1920 and his wife Nammie Eubank Claiborne December 19, 1860 – November 12,
1944. Their children were Charles Buller Claiborne January 14, 1884 – January 1, 1936 and wife Lucy
Yancy Claiborne, Fannie Wortham Claiborne March 12, 1885 – December 17, 1970, Sally Ann Coleman
Claiborne March13, 1889 – October 11, 1966, Nannie Mason Claiborne Hudson March 15, 1893 – June

60. Clarence Davis Farm
Location: US 60 W to Oronoco Church of the Brethren on the right. The Clarence Davis Farm Cemetery
(formerly the S.D. Gilbert Farm) is located about ¼ mile west of Oronoco COB. The cemetery is around
the curve from Oronoco Church and is on the left side of the road. The entrance is private and the drive is
chained. (Box 7913 - J.M. Davis is on the mailbox). The cemetery is down the drive and to the right on a
southeast facing hillside. A large dead tree is in the middle of it. This small cemetery has no fence and is
not maintained. There are 5 standing stones, 4 of which have legible script in varing amounts and
numerous fieldstones. Oronoco COB has its own cemetery but earlier members used this farm as a family
cemetery. There is an infant Charles Whiteside buried here, born March, 1870; died April, 1870. There
is no stone.

1.4 miles to overgrown cemetery on left, difficult to find. There are several fieldstone markers, no

Location: US 60 W to a right turn on Lowesville Rd (778). Drive to Lowesville and turn left on Woodson
Rd (666). Make another left turn immediately on Little Piney Rd (629) and go 1.35 miles to a right turn
on Dillard Hill Rd (723). Proceed 1.74 miles to left turn on Crowleys Creek Rd (630). Go 0.1 mile to
house no. 135 on the left. Adjacent to the house driveway is a graveled orchard lane near a power line.
Drive about 200 ft up the lane to another orchard lane on the right and walk 60 feet to the cemetery. The
Stet cemetery is on a knoll in a grove of trees within apple orchards. There are numerous graves with
fieldstone markers. Well maintained.

Location: US 60 W for 5.5 miles to a right turn on Lowesville Rd (778). Proceed approximately 4.8
miles past Temperance School, to a left turn on Dug Hill Rd (627) and go 1.45 miles to the cemetery on
the left side of the road on a knoll. Gidsville is .23 miles ahead. Cemetery is fenced and well maintained.
Off to the side is buried “God’s perfect gift, Buddy” with dates 1997-2009. Wonderful view.

71. Dodd Cemetery 1978 (CA)
Location: Route 60 west for 11.6 miles, then take a left onto Buffalo Springs Turnpike/635 proceeding .1
mile. Up on a hill to the left is found a cemetery enclosed with fence. Located on the old Jasper Martin
Farm. If you go a bit further up the road there is an entrance to the area on the left. It is gated and posted
but the cemetery is in view of the road. Livestock may be in the pasture. The cemetery is solidly fenced
but is not maintained.

72. Downey on Pera Road Cemetery (CA)
Location: US 29 S to a right turn on Elon Rd (130). Follow Elon Rd west through Naola (15.6 miles) to a
right turn on Pera Rd (727). Proceed approximately 2 miles bearing left to stay on on Pera Road (now
610) continuing another couple miles to a farm lane on the left. On the right are several derelict vehicles.
The cemetery is off in a field. Reputedly the grave of Capt. William Wood is here. Capt. Wood
commanded the canal boat Clinton that went over the falls in the James River in 1854 in a storm. Frank
Padget became a local hero during this incident. There is only one inscribed headstone. There are seven
gravesites marked by fieldstones.

Rd (625). Follow Gidsville Rd for approximately 0.9 miles to the cemetery on the right behind a fence
and red gate. Fenced but not maintained. Some interments removed to Amherst Public Cemetery.

75. Dyson Graveyard (CA)
Location: US 60 E into Nelson Co. and turn right on Piedmont Rd (657). Follow Piedmont to a left turn
on Allens Creek Rd (622) and go northeastward to house number 773. The cemetery is off the road to the
right, crossing the cattle guard. Proceed down the lane around the right side of the house. Cemetery is
just ahead on a knoll in a small copse of trees, one of which is a cedar.
As told by Mr. E.A. Harris, grandson of John William Williams is buried here. J.W. Williams,
Confederate veteran, was a muleskinner for the CSA.

78. Ellis Family of Red Hill Farm (CA)
Location: The original graveyard of the Ellis family was at Red Hill Plantation off of Minors Branch Rd
(647) near Pedlar Mills in western Amherst County. The interred family members were moved to
Amherst Cemetery in the 1930’s by a relative and reburied. The following list of family members was

81. Eubank – Ware on Red Hill Cemetery (CA)
Location: US 29 S to a right turn on Elon Rd (130). Drive west on Elon Rd, past Elon Village and over
Potato Hill, to a right turn on Buffalo Springs Tpke (635) at the Pedlar River Bridge. Go 1.1 miles to a
left turn on Minors Branch Rd (647). Proceed 0.15 mile to stone gate posts on the right, entrance to house
no. 180. The farm lane leads 0.3 mile to a large brick mansion, traditional seat of the Ellis family in
Amherst. The cemetery is located 0.5 mile north of the mansion over rough trails and through pastures in
a grove of tall trees on a hilltop surrounded by pastures. The cemetery is neither maintained nor fenced.
There appears to be more than 50 gravesites, many marked by fieldstones. Only three readable headstones
could be found. This cemetery may be connected to the Eubank cemeteries at Round Top and the
Wilderness. Several foot stones are marked-- ELH, MFW and CDW

82. Eubank Graveyard at Walnut Hill (CA)
Location: US 60 W for approximately 7.5 miles to a left turn on Puppy Creek Rd (610). Proceed
approximately 4.3 miles to Walnut Hill Farm (Eubank Home place) on the right. Just past the farm sign
go to the next hill (6.1 miles to this gate) and there will be grassy lane to a pasture. There will be a rusty
red gate. Walk up the hill and once at the top of the hill, walk along the ridge to the very top. The
cemetery is in a grove of cedars and large oaks (probably 300+ yards from the road). Follow a farm lane
to the top of a hill behind the farm. Cemetery is on the top of the hill through a gate on the right.
Cemetery is fenced with barbed wire and is not maintained. There are several infants (from the 1930s and
1940s) buried here and there are several unmarked graves. Beautiful view

86. Ewers Farm on the James River Cemetery (CA)
Location: US 29 S and south on Monocan Parkway to an exit right on Old Town Connector (210).
Proceed on the Connector to the first traffic light and turn left on Colony Rd. Follow Colony Rd to the
entry of Central Virginia Training Center (CVTC) and on through the complex 0.8 mile to a left turn at
the sign “picnic area” into a maintenance area. Continue to a gate and enter onto a graveled lane. Drive
0.65 miles to a left turn on a grassy lane and proceed across a pasture field, keeping to the right, to a gap
in the woods into the next pasture. The cemetery is about 300 ft on the right in a forested area. The
cemetery is difficult to locate. There are several grave sites, some fieldstone markers and one inscribed
headstone.

87. Fair Oaks Farm Cemetery (AA)
Location: On US 29 Business, (North Main St), drive north to Boxwood Farm Rd (739) to the railroad
overpass, a distance of 2.3 miles from the circle. Just east of the railroad cut is a farm gate on the right
and a farm lane. Follow the farm lane for approximately 600 feet to an old stone foundation of a cabin.
A few feet south of the foundation is a cemetery of field stones (two plots), one stone with a cross
inscribed on it. This is reportedly the grave site of Robert Davies, his parents and other family members.

88. Fairmont Baptist on Buffalo Ridge Cemetery (AA)
Location: US 60 E for 2.6 miles to a right on Dulwich Road (606), at the end of Dulwich turn left on to
Union Hill Rd (604). Go 0.6 mile to a right on Ebenezer Rd (604) and drive 2.2 miles to the intersection
of Higginbotham Rd (624) and Earley Farm Rd (624). Proceed 4.75 miles on Earley Farm past Edloe
Lane at Earley Farm to Fairmont Church site on the right, (2.7 miles from Edloe Ln), at a sharp right bend
where the pavement ends, a fence post with “no trespassing” sign identifies the site which is wooded and
overgrown. There are many unmarked grave sites and three headstones. This entry corrects the location
and confusion with the Evans on Earley Farm Rd cemetery. (Reference: see Fairmont Baptist at Stapleton

Location: US 29 S approximately 5.2 miles to a right turn on Smokey Hollow Rd (663) and then an
immediate left turn on Faulconerville Dr (761). Go 0.1 mile to a right on a private road at Samandas Store
and then turn right on Broken Arrow Trail at a two story house No. 126. Follow the private lane to a fork
at the house and bear left and proceed to a log cabin about 0.4 miles from Samandas. The cemetery is 0.1
mile northwest of the cabin and out buildings, on a knoll in a large pasture. The cemetery is beautifully
situated and well maintained. A wrought iron fence surrounds the graveyard. One marker at the gravesite
reads “unknown.”

Rd (610) (641) and go 3.2 miles to a left turn on Cedar Creek Rd (643). Proceed on Cedar Creek for 1.5
miles to end of state maintenance. Cemetery is on the left down the hill about 200 feet. Grave stone is
laid horizontal on a slight man-made knoll.

garage. The fenced cemetery is approximately 200 feet behind and to the left of the house. Maintained.

Location: US 60 E for 0.9 mile to a left turn on Brockman Park Dr (838). Go 0.1 mile to a right turn on
East Commerce St (839). Proceed to the car park of MTC Corp. The cemetery is west of the building in a
small grove of cedar trees. Although there is only one marker, it is reported many Franklin family
members and other people were buried here. On May 1, 1993, the NSDAR dedicated a monument to
James Franklin at this site on land of his plantation, Montpelier.

Location: U S 60 W to a left on Puppy Creek Rd (610) to an intersection with Ware’s Gap Road (636).
Go .2 miles to a driveway on the right (Franklin-Private drive # 169,Ware’s Gap Road). The graves are
located on the hill on the right side of the house. The owner has placed corral panels around what is
thought to be the site. The site is in a horse pasture and has no markers or stones. The owner has indicated
that the Franklin family stated the following are buried there.

Location: US 60 W to left on Puppy Creek Rd (610) to intersection with Wares Gap Rd (636). Continue
0.10 mile south on Puppy Creek Rd to a right turn at box number 2006 into a farm lane of Buffalo River
Ranch (AKA Harry Franklin farm). Facing front of barn, go through the gate and bear right. Go 150
yards to far side of hay field. Originally the cemetery had 30 or more fieldstone markers in addition to
what is seen now.It was a large cemetery. Many markers can be seen outside the loosely fenced area. The
cemetery has become much smaller because of bulldozing by the current owner. Cemetery is not
maintained. Four inscribed stones, some are down and/or broken.

Location: US 29 N (Bus) on to Boxwood Farms Rd (739) and to a right turn on Grandmas Hill Rd (658).
Follow Grandmas Hill Rd 1.05 miles to a farm lane along a fence line on the left that leads up a slope.
Take the farm lane 0.1 mile to a grove of cedars on the knoll. The fenced cemetery is well maintained.

121. Harrison on Cedar Creek Cemetery (CA)
Location: US 60 W to Dodds Ford, turn left on Buffalo Springs Tpke (635). Proceed to Pleasant View
and at 0.75 mile south turn right on Dancing Creek Rd (641). Follow Dancing Creek Rd (which becomes
a narrow rough gravel road) past the old brick Hamner house on the left on to the intersection with Cedar
Creek Rd (643). A large oak tree is in the middle of the intersection. The Harrison plantation was to the
right (NW) and the Stinnett plantation was to the left (SE). The old Oak Grove School once stood on the
north side of the intersection. Turn right (NW) on Cedar Creek Rd. The cemetery is 0.3 mile on the left
on a hill at a large oak tree with stones piled around it. There are no standing stones and the remains may
have been removed to another cemetery. Bill Chittum remembers a headstone with Nickolas Stinnett’s
name. Nickolas Stinnett married a Harrison daughter.

122. Hartless Cemetery
Location: Take Route 60 West to Dodds Ford, turn left on Route 635/Buffalo Springs Turnpike and
continue to Allwood, turn right on Route 636/Slapp Creek Road. Continue on past Mountain Top
Drive where Slapp Creek Road turns to gravel; continue on Slapp Creek Road past Banks Mountain
Drive which is on the left; you will need to take the next road on the left – an old logging road which does
not have a name (but does have a National Forest sign with logo). Proceed .1 of a mile and there is a gate
that is closed except for hunting season (October till January). You can walk around gate so go 390 feet
down the road from the gate. Look down the hill on the left side of the road and you will see the
Hartless Cemetery. The cemetery is 150 feet from the road. One of the tombstones is broken as a tree has
fallen on it (E.J. Hartless), but you can still read the information lying on the ground. Two other
tombstones have names and information which can still be read. You can also see many other graves
marked with just stones. The tombstones are in the George Washington Forest, but some of the graves
that are just marked with stones are on private property.

Location: US 60 W for 5.6 miles to a right turn on Lowesville Rd (778) and go 1.3 mile to Buffalo River
Bridge and continue 200 feet to a farm lane on right at house. This is the location of the old Henley store
(not extant). The cemetery is reportedly up on ridge to the left or north of the farm lane. The ridge
parallels Lowesville Rd. No headstones could be located.

126. Henley on Mobley Mountain Cemetery (AA) (AKA Henley Cemetery)
Location: US 60 W to a left turn on Lowesville Rd (778) and go 0.45 mile to a right turn on a private
lane, My Way. Follow the rough graveled lanes, bearing left at a three way fork. Continue uphill, past an
old log cabin on the left and a modern home on the right. The rough gravel lane ends at the house. Drive
on straight ahead on an overgrown dirt lane, keeping to the right in a wooded area. The cemetery is 0.5
miles from the maid road and on the right of the trail in the woods. The area, once fenced, is somewhat
overgrown. There are numerous grave sites, some marked with field stones. There are ten inscribed
headstones and one monument inscribed with Christian.

Location: US 60 W for 5.6 miles to right turn on Lowesville Rd (778) to intersection with Woodson Rd
(666) at the Piney River Bridge. Cemetery is on the right behind a brick house next to the “Hite Store”
(The Academy). A block wall surrounds the small cemetery which has five small stones and a four foot
obelisk.

132. Horseshoe Bend Cemetery (AA)
Location: US 29 S B to a right turn on Elon Road (13). Continue for 4 miles to Horseshoe Bend (704).
Take the second entrance as this road is a loop road. Turn right onto Horseshoe Bend and continue for .1
mile to a mailbox 208 on the left. Go down the driveway beside the mailbox for a short distance to a point
where an overhead power line crosses the drive. Stop here and walk to your right on the cleared right-of-
way. Into the woods on your right is evidence of old burials marked by several upright stones and
depressions. There is also evidence of an old fence and short treated posts. Overgrown and not
maintained. Tradition states that this is a slave cemetery, but there is evidence of more recent burials
also.

miles to end of road. Take the left private lane and go 0.3 mile to cemetery on right. Fenced and well

134. Hudson off Meadow Hollow Road
Location: US 60W to Buffalo Springs Turnpike (635). Turn left on Buffalo Springs Turnpike to Meadow
Hollow Loop (799). Turn left on Meadow Hollow Loop and go a short distance. Turn left on Meadow
Hollow Road (642) and go 1.3 miles to a farm gate on the left after crossing the bridge and passing
Mountain View Farm . Private entrance (Jr. Davis Farm) Go through the gate and follow the track up the
hill to the cemetery in a grove of trees. There are lots of bushes under which cows have made tunnels.
Three massive inscribed stones are found and some are buried. It is difficult to determine the size of this
cemetery because it is so overgrown.[One interesting fact is that the cemetery faces Gun Mountain, a site
where Confederate soldiers had a lookout ].Two field stones were found. Not fenced, not maintained.

Location: US 29 N for 3.5 miles to a left turn on Patrick Henry Hwy (151). Drive 3.5 miles to a right turn
on Meredith Lane (612). Proceed uphill to a left turn on Roses Mill Rd (611) and go to Pleasant Grove
Church. Bear right at the church on Summerhill Rd and go 0.2 mile to private lane on the right. The
cemetery is 300 feet behind the house in a pasture field in a clump of trees. Overgrown.

Location: US 60 E for 2.3 miles to Box 1052 on the right side of the road. Private drive on which the
graveyard is located is just past the mailbox on the right. Maintained.

Location: US 29 S for 10.4 mile to Hwy 130. Turn right and go west approximately 2 miles and cross
over the railroad, turn onto Leftwich Rd. Go south on Leftwich to a footpath on the left after a large
curve. There are 25 unmarked graves on the old Hughes plantation.

138. Indian Burial Site on Stapleton
Location: US 60 E to a right turn on Riverville Rd (600). Proceed on Riverville to a right turn on
Stapleton Rd (622). Proceed approximately 5 miles, (prior to Friendship Lane). The burial ground is
across from #1695 – a total of seven and a half miles from Route 60 East – on a wooded slope in sight of
the James River. Numerous white rocks and stone markers.

139. Iseman Cemetery
Location: Take Route 29 north two miles to Boxwood Farm Road, continue on to a right on Grandmas
Hill (658). Turn right again onto Windy Ridge Way (733), on land once owned by Isaiah Iseman and
wife Mary. Entrance is in a Westvaco tree farm with a red gate. Walk along a narrow road through the
tree farm; road ends at the cemetery. Not maintained. Cemetery consists of some field stone markers,
several white wooden crosses with names attached by means of vinyl adhesive material, and traditional
gravesites with headstones.

Location: US 60 E to right turn on Union Hill Rd (604). Go 0.6 mile to a left turn on Ebenezer Rd (604).
Drive to intersection with Higginbotham Rd. Continue straight on Earley Farm Rd (624), for 1.4 miles to
the cemetery on the right in a wooded area. Maintained. There are several unmarked gravesites and two
unreadable headstones.

143. Jennings at Hideaway Farm Cemetery (CA)
Location: US 60 W for 13.55 miles to a right turn on Mt Horeb Rd (686). Go 0.3 mile to a right turn on
Hideaway Farm Rd (749). Proceed past the sawmill complex to a farm land and drive 1.2 miles to
Fitzgerald farmstead. Park at the silo and walk to the left of the silo. You will see a cement pad with a
wrought iron fence. Embedded in the concrete are three inscribed stones and fieldstone markers. The
Jennings family had this done to preserve the gravesites. A memorial reads Jennings 1992. This marker,
fence and cement cover were erected by descendents of Nannie Goode Parks Jennings and Henry Beasley
Jennings, Sr. who was the youngest son of Eliza Veron Jennings and John William Jennings Jr. both
buried here.

Location: US 60 E for 2.3 miles to a right turn on Union Hill Rd (604). Drive 0.7 miles to a left turn on
Ebenezer Rd (604). Go 1.9 miles to the small cemetery on the left edge of the road, a short distance from
Ebenezer Church. The plot is fenced and maintained. There are three soapstone markers with no
inscriptions.

then a left turn on Roses Mill Rd (611). Go approximately 0.4 mile, past a small, white church, to a lane
on the right leading to an old two story house. Two gravesites are located on a trail behind the house once
owned by the Jones family.

Location: The location of this cemetery is uncertain; the newspaper’s obituary states the burial was at the
Jones Family Cemetery near Tye River. The funeral was held at Wesleyan Methodist Church which is
located on Kilmarnock Road (710), just off of Boxwood Farm Road (739).
Jones, Walter Maxwell, No marker found; obituary states burial at Jones Family Cemetery near Tye
River, d. September 27, 1942; age 72; lived near Tye River and was struck by a train.
152. Jordan Family Cemetery (CA)
Location: US 29 N to a left turn on Patrick Henry Hwy (151). Proceed approximately 2.5 miles to a right
turn on Geddes Mtn Rd (662). Drive 1.3 miles to a left turn on Jefferson Trace (700). Go 0.8 mile, past
Geddes house, to the end of the road and turn right onto a farm lane at house number 420. Proceed on the
private drive for 0.4 mile to the old Jordan plantation house. The cemetery is 150 feet east of the house
surrounded by a wrought iron fence and is well maintained by the property owners.

153. Jordan Furnace Cemetery
Location: US 29 S 10.4 miles to a right turn on Elon Rd (Hwy 130). Proceed for approximately 17 miles
to the Blue Ridge Parkway crossing and go another 2.8 miles on Elon Rd to a power station and dam on
the left on the James River. There is a creek on the right just before the dam and a parking area is there.
This was the site of the Jordan Iron Furnace established c. 1862. On October 28, 1873, the furnace
exploded and killed two workers. It is assumed that the dead workers were buried in the vicinity, perhaps
near a small creek branch descending Piney Mountain where many of the furnace workers lived. No
cemetery has been located. Also, see page 247, Slate Graveyard, in the 1999 edition.

Location: US 29 S to a left turn on Coolwell Rd (663). Proceed 1.9 miles to a left turn on Izaak Walton
Rd (663). Follow Izaak Walton to a left turn on Kentmoor Farm Rd (663 & 613). Go 1.55 miles to the
county land fill entrance on the left. Directly opposite, in a field is a farm lane. The cemetery is about 0.38
mile south and 30 feet off to the right of the rough farm lane. The information is from a 1997 survey by
John S Kent III, from family records and on-site survey. There are ten or more field stone markers for
graves.

156. Kyle Cemetery off Monacan Park Rd (CA)
Location: US 29 S to a right turn on Elon Rd (Hwy 130). Proceed to Elon and turn left on Monacan Park
Rd (652). Go 0.4 mile to mail box no. 265 and turn left on private lane. Drive 0.2 mile to end of land
with a house on the left and several old barns on the right. Walk past the barns through a metal gate.
Cemetery is under a solitary cedar tree about 200 yards out in a pasture, (AKA old Horton or Martin
farm). One large tombstone lying face up and several field stone markers.
