PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Just when 2011/12 was about to be written off as the lost season due to a record run of wet weather, enough rays of sunshine penetrated the cloud cover to bathe the Plateau in glory. March produced four Premierships for the Club, two senior and two junior plus the senior T20 Championship trophy. This was capped off with the retention of the Junior and Senior Club Championships.

Players and organisers alike were frustrated week in, week out with a pattern of wet weather that saw torrential rain usually on Wednesdays and Thursdays resulting in soggy outfields (or lakes like Nolans was in February – see picture) and come Saturday, the inevitable closure of the grounds by Council. If the grounds were open, a thunderstorm around 2:30pm usually sent the Seniors scurrying for the shelter of the Brookvale Hotel.

Players returned from the Christmas break to find a new pitch at Plateau Park. Part of the MWCA/Warringah Council pitch improvement program utlising the player levy funds collected over the past few seasons, the new slab has been repositioned to a more central position making for a much improved cricket experience. This improvement coincides nicely with the old tennis shed being redeveloped and finally operational as the Club’s first on-ground facility. This small, but significant project allows us to store training and game day equipment in an infinitely more convenient location making life much easier for coaches and captains. The dramatic improvement to this area of Plateau Park is there for all to see – and enjoy. The project was completed with grant assistance from Warringah Council and the NSW Government. Thanks also to Dave Moss and Luke Ireland for their contribution of labour and expertise to the project.

In addition to the new pitch and facility, the playing experience with CPCC received an extra boost with the financial support of the club by Lateral Corporation. This major sponsorship was brought to the club by Tony Johnson, a regular player over the past few seasons in the 4

th/5

th

Grade team allowing the provision of a playing cap and shirt to all senior players and the purchasing of a new ‘pavilion’ sun-shelter. We look forward to continuing this association with Lateral and further equipment/gear provided to Club members for the coming season. Speaking of new equipment purchased to improve the lot of players, CPCC acquired a surplus ball machine from Mike Pawley midway through the season and its been working overtime since. Together with our excellent cricket nets, CPCC has the equipment and training facility at Plateau Park the envy of many clubs.

Club members continue to make strong contributions to the development of cricket on the Northern Beaches through their involvement on the committees of the Manly Warringah Cricket Association (MWCA) and Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association (MWJCA). Vicki Carden’s work as Assistant Secretary of the MWJCA over the past years was a big factor in her being awarded Cricket NSW ‘Volunteer of the Year’ for the Northern Region, a prestigious honour. Brenden Ball (MWCA Vice President) and Dom Wheeler (MWCA Executive Committee) have been part of a progressive and productive senior association. Apart from the pitch improvement program previously mentioned, the introduction of a T20 competition, fund raising function and new format for the Presentation Night have been raging successes.

Mid-March is an exciting time when CPCC is represented in the finals and this year we were right in the thick of it. A very wet semi-final weekend saw the 1sts and 4ths drop out of the race but left the 5ths, 6ths and 7ths alive. In the end young lions Mitch Curran and Brodie Elliot captained their 6

th and 7

th Grade squads respectively to Grand Final victory whilst the 5ths unfortunately saved their worst

till last. Not to be outdone, the juniors brought home premierships in the 14s and 15s. The T20 Final is now well documented as one of the most exciting matches witnessed in our time. Whilst it is great to get our name on this increasingly prestigious trophy so soon, it is more satisfying to know that five of our seven grades supplied players to this team – a true club effort.

Heading into the 2012/13 season the Club and Committee face several challenges. The committee will be reviewing the Club’s financial model during the off-season to assess its sustainability. This exercise is required due to the huge increase in costs associated with paying Umpires in the Seniors. The MWCA has dramatically increased the pool of umpires over the past couple of years with teams down to 4

th grade receiving them regularly. The positive has been an improvement in the playing experience that comes with impartial

umpires however the cost per team for umpires is now greater than what we receive from team fees. Then there is the cost of balls (greater now with more one-day games), registration fees and equipment. Fortunately sponsorship money from The Brookvale Hotel and Lateral Corp has offset this cost however ongoing sponsorship is not guaranteed and new sponsors are extremely difficult to get. Hopefully revenue from Kiosk sales/rent and fundraising can be established in the next few seasons. The aim will always be to keep playing fees as low as possible.

The other major challenge will be accommodating our expanding squads happily in a shrinking competition. Whilst we have steered away from having two teams in the same grade believing this is not healthy for the Club, this may be unavoidable and in fact, may be dictated by the MWCA who are reviewing the composition and format of senior grades. For the past few decades the committee fortunately has had to do very little in terms of determining the make up and positioning of our squads however it may need to become more involved. I trust that players may be a little more ameniable to playing the grade that best suits their abilities even if it means playing with different team members.

Come spring, our club facility at Plateau Park should be fitted out and open for business on game days. I’m sure it will quickly become an established base for CPCC activity from early Saturday morning till when the bell rings around 6pm in the evening. I invite all in our community to join us there at Plateau Park and participate in another great summer of cricket.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

For the second year in a row CPCC has brought home 2 Premierships. Congratulations to Mitch Curran and Brodie Elliot for bringing the 6

th & 7

th Grade Shields respectively back to the Club. We also brought back the Club Championship silverware back to the Club for

the second consecutive year. Tom Carden Captained the Plateau to victory in the T20 Grand Final in the most amazing game of cricket I think I have ever played. We also had our fair share of players winning trophies at the Manly Warringah Presentation Night. With 7 Senior teams, 14 Junior teams, Milo In2Cricket, a Masters Team and two T20 Teams the Club is extremely strong and while this is something that the Committee is very proud of, we definitely do not take this for granted. Our thanks go out to the everyone who is involved with putting a team on the field whether it be Senior, Junior, T20 or Masters. The following tables summarises where the Plateau Senior teams finished in the regular and post seasons:

Juniors - The Juniors had another excellent year on the field with the Under 15 Collaroy Plateau Power and Under 14 Collaroy Plateau Surge both bringing home Premierships. Another spectacular season-ending event was held at Clontarf Park where Vicki Carden and the band of organisers orchestrated the Juniors, the trophies, the Mums and Dads, the Coaches & Managers & a thousand sausages. Financial - The Clubs finances took a bit of a hit this year. This was due to a refund that I mentioned last year of a $6k government grant that was paid to us twice. We also purchased an excess supply of cricket balls. From a financial perspective, more concerning is the increase in the cost of Umpires and the increase of Umpires appointed to our games. While the general concensus is: this is good for the game, it is not so good for finances. With increased costs of balls, ground fees, umpire fees & reduced sponsorship, this is putting upward pressure on player fees which will most likely have to increase again next year. It’s not all doom & gloom, we are still in a good financial position but we will need to monitor this closely, especially in the next year or two. Thanks again to Toby for his efforts with the Plateau spreadsheets and the endless fee collections. Plateau Park - Significant progress has occurred with regard to use of the Tennis Shed at Vic Huxley Oval. The fencing is torn down, there is a new aluminium table, a new window, new roller doors, the power is on, the Lease is signed & the whole facility will be ready for use this season thanks to the incredible efforts of President Huxley. There was also a new concrete slab laid down and we now have a better located pitch at Plateau Park. Twenty/20 - As I mentioned, this was an amazing game or Cricket. Fortunes swayed multiple times throughout the match. We tied the match for the second time in the T20 Season. So we were off to Super Over again. From my perspective the last over went something like this: CPCC had scored 9 in the Super Over, setting Cromer 10 runs to win the match. Nick Bonner was bowling & I was the wicket keeper. The first delivery was an off-side wide (1 run of zero balls). The first ball was hit for 4 (5 runs of 1 ball). We thought we were gone. The next ball came straight to me and the batsmen started to run, I under-armed the ball over the batsman to the bowlers end, effecting a run-out and saving a run. Magnificent bowling from Nick produced only 2 runs from the next 3 balls (7 runs from 5 balls). Could we win? Not only was the last ball a wide, it skidded & I somehow managed to stop another 4 extras which would have ended the match (8 runs from 5 balls). Last ball - Take 2: Life went into slow motion: the ball is hit to cover and the tying run is scored: the ball is thrown to me and I take the bails off: to my surprise, the batsman has held his ground and is not out: he needs to make it to the other end to win the match:

again I under-arm the ball: Mick Mackin grabs and flicks the ball back to the stumps and runs the batsman out by inches: meanwhile I collapse from the adrenalin. Fantastic game, Go Plateau. Social Scene - With the Clubs third Tour to England now less than a year away, the social calendar is going to be fully stacked this season. Yet again we went to Nelson Bay with the most hectic schedule the weekend has ever seen. The schedule included Golf, Nelson Bay RSL, Beach Footy, Tobbogan Run, Putt Putt Golf, Murray’s Brewery, waiting for the pie shop to open at 5am, backyard cricket and much more. In events closer to the Plateau, Rob Steel won the Dead Celebrities Fancy Dress as an uncanny Freddy Mercury look-a-like, Anthony Papandrea won the coveted best injury award with his hip replacement, Cameron Millings became the 1000

th player for CPCC & Dan Schimek won the Bruce Shearer Award. Looking forward to another great season ahead at the Plateau.

TEN SEASONS AGO

The tragic events of September 11, 2001 was an ominous sign at the start of the cricket year for CPCC’s on-field fortunes ten seasons ago. Six months after, three of the Club’s senior teams made the Grand Final but all three were defeated. Instead of it becoming known as ‘Black Sunday’ the Tri-Towers’ collapse only sparked a ‘celibratory’ mood back at the Dee Why Hotel that befitted Premiers rather than Runners-Up. Chief amongst the losers was Dean Storey’s B2 team who were rolled by Harbord Bombers for only fourteen, however the boys quickly shook off this nightmare to lead the end of season frivolity both back at the pub and a few weeks later at Nelson Bay. John Jackson’s A2 Gold and Col Huxley’s A1 teams were the other Towers to be toppled.

Speaking of Nelson Bay, the end of season trip literally exploded in activity. At about 1am the fibro shacks around the RSL shook as the cannon boomed back to life for the first time since the Japanese were chased out of Tarakan, signifying the end of another memorable CPCC season (or perhaps just the end of another night at the RSL). In a season full of 911 moments (included the 911 event itself), the touring party stopped for a game of golf at a place that looked scarily like Camp X-Ray Guantanamo Bay. There was even a terrorist John Walker Lindh look alike who had earlier bowled the fastest ball at the local bowling alley posing as the A2 Blue’s John O’Neill. The reason for A2 Blue and A2 Gold came about with the Club entering two teams into the A2 competition due to a) a lack of Clubs nominating for this grade across the MWCA and b) the aspirations of Jacko’s A3 grade to play higher. Both teams made the finals with John’s Gold team taking out the minor premiership. The Gold team also produced the Shearer winner in Paul Endersby who achieved the rare distinction of scoring a ton in both A2s and A1s in the same season, and included the Club’s first internet signing in Yorkshireman Dan Peters.

In first grade, Pete Henriksen shot out of the blocks with 133 in game one. It was part of a brilliant win as the defending premiers recovered from 2-55 to chase down 266 at Harbord Park with Pete’s ton part of a 2

nd wicket partnership of 196 with Rob Minnett (66*). Pete also resurrected the MWCA’s

Martin Shield Squad and skippered the team through to the semi-finals. For his efforts he was awarded Sportsman of the Year by the Association. After several years of lobbying by Dave Quarford supported by many in our community, the Club were finally successful in having the cricket ground at Plateau Park named Vic Huxley Oval. In another historical moment, Randy returned an old ‘CPCC’ boundary flag after thirty-odd years of safe keeping under his bed. This artifact has since been turned into the ‘Randolph Beddows Flag’ Award for best performed First Grade player. Whilst on the subject of perpetual trophies, ex-Clubman and Essilea St resident Brian Moore visited the Plateau for the first time since returning home to England in the mid-seventies. Taking in a first grade game at Plateau Park, Brian was thrilled to see the Club thriving and donated a perpetual trophy which was named the Brian & Barbara Moore Clubman Trophy. The inaugural winner was allround good guy Chris Arcus.

The annual Christmas Dinner was on the move to the Calcutta Cricket Club in the back blocks of Belrose. It would have been closer and easier to find had it actually been in Calcutta but a great night was had with even the local diners joining in the Trivia – hat theme and all. In other Social Club news, Toby Horstead took out the Golf Day at Bayview in what became known as the ‘Horstead Heist’. A1 keeper Andrew Macleman won his eighth Warwick Armstrong Trophy. Our seven junior teams were progressing well under the watchful eye of coach Quarford and Vicki Carden and the new Treasurer Paul Brown reported $4114.49 in the bank in between heating up party pies.

The ‘Randolph Beddows’ Flag

Randolph Beddows is well known in Manly Warringah cricket circles, particularly amongst the First Graders. There is no keener cricketer in the District than Randy. Whether it has been following Martin Shield, the old Forest Hawks, Balgowlah or of late Harbord Bowling teams, Randolph has been a regular on the sidelines for years. Given a chance to field for any team who was short, Randolph would be out like a shot invariably to fine leg. Otherwise, he’s more than happy to have a chat and reminisce. In 2004 Randolph returned a piece of CPCC history he had been custodian of for 25 years. The small flag, one of many which used to be attached to wooden stakes and employed as boundary markers, was left behind after a match in the late 60’s. It is the last known survivor. It was decided to honour the first grade player with the highest ‘Shearer’ Points total for the season with the creation of this trophy.

The ‘B & B’ Trophy (Brian & Barbara Moore)

This perpetual senior Club Award was added during the 2001/02 season courtesy of ex-clubman Brian Moore. Brian, who re-visited the Plateau

for the first time since returning to England after the ’72 season, was thrilled to see the Club continuing on as strong as ever after all these years. Brian and his son Ian who moved to Australia from England in the sixties, played for several seasons with the Plateau with Brian captaining the 1971/72 premiership winning C2 team. It was agreed by the Executive that the Award be presented to a player

who displays an effort, both on and off the field which is above and beyond that which is normally expected. The winner is decided by vote of nominations received from team Captains.

Rothmans sponsored this trophy, first awarded in 1968. Originally introduced for the winner of the Club’s Annual Single Wicket Competition, this award now includes the winner of a Double Wicket Competition, a variation of the single wicket concept. Both events involve club members (individually or in pairs) playing off against each other over competition rounds to decide finalists and eventually a winner/winning pair. Results are determined by runs scored and wickets taken, against drawn opponents. The event was resurrected in 2006 after a 17 year hiatus.

Touring Trophies

These two Perpetual Trophies were created during the 50th Anniversary Tour of England. Players are eligible for these awards by playing in any official CPCC touring match (either International or Domestic) or official home ‘host’ matches against visiting touring teams. They are awarded on a conventional season basis (1 July to 30 June).

CPCC’s 1,000th Player – Cameron Millings

The start of season 2011/12 gave rise to a significant milestone in the Club’s history. When 7th Grade’s Cameron

Millings walked out to bat on day one of round one of the new season, little did he or anyone else for that matter realize that he was about to occupy a prestigious and unique place in club history.

When the statistical database was updated at the end of 2010/11, 996 Senior players were in the record books as having played a match for the club. This detail was forgotten until the end of the current season when a process was undertaken to determine who of those playing their first match for CPCC was the fourth to participate in 11/12. The three players above him took to the field or batted prior to Cameron’s involvement in the match giving him the title of ‘Mr One Thousand’.

10,000 Runs – Rob Minnett

Another major milestone was passed late in season 2011/12 by Rob Minnett when he became the first CPCC player to score 10,000 runs for the Club in the MWCA competition.

Rob may well be the first batsman to pass this total in MWCA history as his longevity and consistently high run scoring is unique amongst local players. It has taken Rob twenty-nine seasons to amass 10004 runs at 29.86 and includes ten centuries with a highest score of 144. Eighteen of those seasons have been played in the top grade.

The feat makes Rob the ‘Bob Williams’ of CPCC batting with 10,000 runs considered the equal of 1,000 wickets. Rob shows no sign of slowing up and will soon be well on his way to 15,000.

Another great season at the Plateau with a solid effort in the rain effected Semi-Final, but the rain gods were not kind to us & that’s where our season ended. We love new players at CPCC & this year we welcomed Ryan Dunn, Rob Snelling, Zac Peteh & Damian Porter to the Plateau ranks, strongly boosting our First Grade side. The Season began with a bye in the first round and the first week of game 2 was washed out, which meant for the first time in as long as I can remember, there was no September cricket in First Grade. But that didn’t seem to matter as we jumped from the bottom to the top of the ladder with a bonus point win in a one day game against Mona Vale. Game 3 was against last years Premiers Wakehurst and with the epic Semi Final game still in our minds, we were keen on a bit of payback. And we got that payback with a solid First Innings win narrowly missing an Outright result. Zac Peteh’s 49 runs with the bat and an amazing 7/36 by Col Huxley guiding us to victory. Sadly it would be the last time that Dave Sharp would be able to bowl succumbing to a back injury. Our next 2 games did not go to plan. We thought our 163 would be enough against Harbord Bowling, especially when we had them 4/56. Nick Buxton smashed 60 runs with some towering 6’s & brilliant bowling from Mick Trevaskis and Col Huxley who both beat the bat a million times but couldn’t find the edge. Game 5 was similar, we scored 125 and had Harbord Diggers in trouble at 6/68 but they cruised to victory. Game 6 was a Bye so we needed a win in Game 7 but my Goldo was not the ideal start. Mona Vale crept past our lack-lustre 105 then sent us in again and rolled us for another lack-lustre 104. Mona then smashed the required 77 in 9 overs, leaving us with outright defeat. Victory was the next stop in Round 8. Great bowling from Huxley, Brooks, Henriksen, Bennetts, Snelling and Dunn contained Wakehurst to 7/154 in a 1 day game. Pete then came out and slogged 61 runs like a man possessed and our season was back on track with another bonus point win. Harbord Bowling handed us a bonus point defeat in Round 9 but in Round 10 we caught Diggers off their game rolling them for 82. Paps and Malam comfortably breezed Plateau past their total clawing back a bonus point win.Games 12, 13, 14 & 15 produced an epic last ball loss to Mona Vale, a washout when we had Wakehurst in deep trouble at 7/78, a fight-back win against Diggers thanks to Dunny’s 5/39 and a 2 weeks of rain against Bowling. We made the Semi as the lower ranked team and once again the rain gods screwed us over. We spent the first day bucketing water. Our 127 was only going to be enough if we got some luck which we never did. We have a very good outlook for the season ahead and I am very keen to get the Plateau off to a flyer in the season ahead.

After making the semi & losing to back to back premiers Harbord Bowling in 3rd grade we stepped up to 2nd grade this season. We had a very similar squad to last season & it was hoped that with the majority of the boys being between 17 & 20 that we would continue to improve. We were certainly competitive & in fact after winning the penultimate game outright were in 4th & as it turned out only needed to gain a single point in the last round to make the semis.

Unfortunately our batting failed again that day as it had done many times before during the season. This is highlighted by our leading run getter Dom not clearing 250 runs. TC started the season well & Gus hit 2 very good knocks in his first & last innings, unfortunately there was not much in-between. We missed Snags with the bat, he played a couple of times but his heart wasn’t in it.

We did however regularly bowl opposing teams out, JPD continued to develop this season & although he probably didn’t finish as well as he would have liked he still returned over 30 wickets @ a very good average. Nick also improved this season & bowled with more consistency than last year & with good heat. Mazza was a little inconsistent but when he was on he was a real handful for opposing bats & did return the spectacular figures one day of 6 for 5. Our fielding & catching was below the standard required to really challenge in 2nd grade. Dom kept well all season; TC & JPD were both good all season & the Brick improved a lot in the 2nd half as well.

All in all it was an enjoyable year, one of the highlights being the team bonding night at Dan’s house complete with boat race & Dom V Brendo match race. (It was a dead heat by the way) We were always well represented back at the Brooky on Sat evenings & at club social functions as well.

With a few of the older guys retiring (some for the 2nd or 3rd time) it is likely that this team will change a fair bit next year. Quite a few of you have the talent to do well in first grade or the next level in seasons to come if you continue to work on your games, but the main thing is that you continue to enjoy what is undoubtedly the greatest team sport of all. Take your inspiration from the great Luke Ireland who jagged in for a premiership with the 7th grade boys this season! It was a highly successful season for CPCC winning 6th & 7th grade making the finals in 5 out of 7 grades, winning the T20 comp in an absolute thriller & going back to back again winning the Club Championship.

After our usual slow start to the season we sat on zero points after two outright losses due to poor batting and not being able to get a full side to both games. Still, the rag tag band of blokes that made up the 2011/12 CPCC 3

rd Grade team don’t worry about things like poor starts and after

picking up a couple of guys to give us a regular group of ten players plus a few floaters that played a few games here and there, we had a great run into Christmas and saw in the new year on top of the table. The first game of 2012 resulted in another strong victory and, in a perfect world, the season would have finished up on SAT 7 JAN and I’d be writing this report as the proud captain of the 2011/12 3

rd Grade Premiers. Alas, it’s not a

perfect world and after showing such promise and playing such strong, positive cricket, we then collapsed as spectacularly as our often spectacular batting collapses and didn’t win another game to end the season in a very disappointing 5

th place. Despite the shocking second half of the season, it

was still an enjoyable season played with a great bunch of guys that had fun while we were out there and there were still plenty of personal highlight:

Steve Albanese scoring 406 runs (including one century) to win the MWCA Batting Aggregate award

Dan Schimek scoring 306 runs and taking 33 wickets to win the CPCC Bruce Shearer Award

Mick Mackin scoring 208 and taking 42 wickets

Nick Armstrong taking 35 wickets, tripling his haul of 12 wickets that he took last season, with some outstanding pace bowling

Darren McDermott taking 30 catches to win the Warwick Armstrong Award for the third consecutive year

Every one of the other regular players also contributed throughout the season with young guns Cameron Schimek and James Scognamiglio each playing a match winning innings to get us two victories while wickets tumbled around them. Both players were also strong in the field along with Nick Berney who, despite having never really played cricket before, took out our team fielding award with some very sharp catches and brilliant work in the field. Lastly, our two other club stalwarts, Andrew Cameron and David Quarford, both had solid seasons with Camo bouncing back to his best form with the bat scoring over 200 runs at the top of the order and Freddy solid as a rock at first slip and still bamboozling opposition teams with his offies.

Lastly, special mention must go to team doctor and part time Point fielder, Michael Armstong, for once again filling in for full games / half games / short notice cameos when someone is running late or leaving early. Carrying on where he left off last year, he still holds an infinity average having not been dismissed in the five games he played this season to go with the three games he played last season. Quite simply, the bloke is impossible to dislodge!

I had a great time as captain of the 4ths this season. We had a lot of new faces and some familiar faces and overall a good bunch of blokes. Despite our preseason training consisting of a few throw downs at Nolans reserve prior to round 1, we were still quite optimistic about our chances this season. And with good reason, looking around our squad I was excited about the amount of options we had with bat and ball. After losing our first game to the eventual minor premiers Manly Leagues (in hindsight we should of had at least one net session) we started to play some impressive cricket. We were undefeated thereafter right up until Christmas and in the process we had rattled off 3 outrights and Harbord diggers aside we really had not been threatened in any match.

It was evident from the start that we had a very strong and formidable bowling attack who were getting the business done. Some individual highlights include;

o Josh’s career best bowling figures of 6/13. Which featured some hooping inswing from a left hander at its best!

o Jimmy’s 3 catches with a broken finger, sorry Jimmy but its $2 that these were the only catches you took all season.

o Doug returning from his hiatus with 7 catches in his first 2 games back. Typical Dougie though, dropping the ‘sitter of the season’ in

between all the hard ones.

o Jacks 79 against Cromer, which featured an incredible 66 runs in boundaries.

o Adam McNicholl’s 5fa on debut, hooping the ball into the right handers.

o Evan Mortimer’s unique ability to sink schooners on a Friday night and still finish the season with a bowling average of 8.00runs per

wicket.

o Brian Siao’s incredible start to the season. Which included several monster 6s and his first 50. Many more to come for soggy.

o Hamish Evans bowling 2 of the best spells of spin bowling I have seen in afternoon’s cricket. Incredibly they are tarnished with the fact

that they both came in losing games but nonetheless his ‘claw catch’ caught and bowled was pretty epic!

o The outstanding development of Nirav which culminated in a really impressive 2 knocks to finish off the season against a strong diggers

attack. Great season Ravi!

After losing the first game of the season we ended up only losing another 2 games in the season (both against diggers) and unfortunately one of them had to be a semi-final. With 4 outrights we finished with an incredible 75 points and due to rain we were robbed of having a shot at the minor premiership. Rain intervening with us at 2/30 chasing 144. Unfortunately, we were unable to do the business at the end of the season. It was such a disappointing way to finish a great season, to be 3/67 chasing 105, it is really hard to swallow. Especially when you have played so well to put yourself in that position in the first place. However, as cliché as is, that is cricket! And despite the loss I was proud to be a part of a great performance.

Overall an enjoyable season, bring on next year! Jason Fox (Skipper)

Round 1 – Terry Hills @ Terry Hills The season began with two new faces to our regular line up. We welcomed John Brooks (Brooksy) from Harbord Bowling Cricket Club and Michael Bowman (Archer) from the wild wild west (ie Penrith). Both additions proving to be valuable assets to our tight knit side, most of us having played together at least since our famous GF victory in the 2007/08 season. The opening game was against Terry Hills at their vast home ground. I don’t recall who put the boundaries out, but they must have been trying to emulate the MCG. We won the toss and bowled to get everyone in the field and blow out the winter cobwebs. Success came immediately as Rohanek steaming in for the first ball clean bowled their opener, a perfect start to the season. Bowmans first contribution to his new side was in the form of a missile return from the ring for a run out chance that cleared both keeper and the slips cordon. An overthrow yes, but we had potentially found another Conde arm in the team, amongst the rest of us who tend to throw like girls on occasion. TH scraped together 97 with wickets shared by the usual first string attack, and CPCC could smell a first round outright. We headed out to bat and compiled a steady 194 before the 10th wicket fell. Pressley opened his account with an impressive 57 runs (someone had been netting in the off-season), which would not be his only venture into half century territory for the season. We stuck TH back in to attempt the outright victory, and came oh so close having them 8/101 down (with only 9 wickets available), before overs and time passed. A close outright opportunity missed, but a great start to the new season! Round 2 - St Peters @ Nolans 3 We hadn’t played a St Peters side for several seasons, but the faces were pretty much the same since our last encounter on arrival at the ground day 1. We won the toss (2 in a row, must have been beginners luck) and batted. Still trying to work out an opening combination Faulkner got a guernsey at number 2. A six to get GF off the mark set the tone for a swashbuckling innings and a quick fire 33 got us off to a flyer. Chung joined Faulkner and belted an impressive 75 looking every bit the class batsmen he is, before a lower order collapse saw 4 ducks and the mighty tanks stumble to 151 all out. We entered the field a little apprehensive after our batting collapse (not the last one we would go through in the season). Oh ye of little faith…… our attack produced the goods in economical fashion, Rohanek 3/34, Chung 4/33 and the return of absent from week 1, Matt Moore 5/19 including a rare hat-trick. We took an early finish on day 2 having cleaned St Peter’s up for 99 and headed down the Brooky celebrating 2 from 2. Round 3 – Belrose Rugby League @ Lionel Watts Our next encounter brought Belrose Rugby League, another side we’d encountered a couple of season ago. Their big “bowl all day” opening bowler had slimmed down somewhat so he’d now probably bowl all week, much to our dismay. We lost the toss and were sent in. Contributions from Humberstone (20), Chung (39), Conde (46) & Bowman (46) helped us to a competitive 194/10. Rohanek opened proceedings clean bowling their opener with the score on 0. His first of 6 wickets for the day returning 6/19 off 14 with 6 maidens. Other wickets were shared around with special mention to Brooksy taking his first wicket for CPCC off his second ball to close the Belrose innings at 93. Another early finish for Plateau 3 from 3. Round 4 – HBCC @ Lake Park We went into this game with high expectations against the cellar dwellers HBCC, they had already been beaten outright in earlier rounds. We lost the toss and HBCC batted, with only one score in double figures we were chasing 73 for first innings spoils. Bowman’s leggies cleaned them up (5/12 off 5). Enter Pressley and Bowman who amassed 213 for the second wicket, both putting three figures against their names. Bowman was sitting on exactly 100 at the close of play week 1, Pressley still short. Skipper gave them maximum 7 overs before we’d be declaring on day 2, a chance for Pressley to knock another ton for CPCC, with enough time for the outright. Bowman was bowled without adding to his overnight score, and it took Pressley an agonising 5 or so overs to get the required runs (101*), with Steel immediately declaring the CPCC innings closed at 3/244. HBCC didn’t stand at chance as we cleaned them up for 48 in their second dig in the 27th over. Only three bowlers required to do the job, Moore (6/19), Coates (2/11), Bowman (1/15). Centuries are always special but two in the one innings was huge! Round 5 – DY RSL @ The Home of Cricket By round 5 we were neck and neck on the ladder with DY RSL, both sides going into this round un-defeated. They were ultimately going to be our main competition throughout the season and eventually we would meet them in the grand final in March. We won a vital toss and batted (in two dayers we are a bat first side). A steady start from Humbers and Faulkner, and a welcome inclusion of Garry Rudder at 4 had our strongest batting card of the season thus far in the shed. All of the middle order fired, Pressley (27), Rudder (36), Moore (19) with a devastating lower middle order partnership between Chung (92) & Conde (41) which had DY heads hanging low as we closed our innings at 277 in 70 overs day 1. Week 2, DY’s skipper Chesher and Wilkinson combined for an opening stand of 52, before Coates was brought on to bowl his nagging away swing. He proved the destroyer taking 5/25 off 10 overs with 4 maidens. Other wickets were shared around, 7 were catches & 2 stumping’s to Conde. We rolled DY for 150 in 43 overs. An empathic victory to the might tanks over our main rivals, which would be a repeated theme as we went 3 from 3 against them during the regular season. This completed the first round robin of matches and we had beaten every side we came up against. Even at this stage of the season leading into the one dayers over Xmas & New Year (and the soon to come effects of weather) we were pretty much assured a finals berth. We negotiated the XMAS/New Year period one dayers without a loss (only a draw due to a wash out). Other washouts gave us draw points and a forfeit victory against St Peter’s kept us ahead of the pack. Our only loses in the regular season were in round 6 going in with a depleted side vs Terry Hills on a rain effected ground (I think we were the only game to get on that week) & round 14 vs bottom of the table HBCC (one of our famous batting collapses). The round 14 loss a timely wakeup call heading into the last regular round vs DY RSL (shortened to a one dayer due to another rain affected weekend). Both teams were on level points going in, and the winner would be minor premiers, of huge importance with the crappy weather that had been around for months. We won the toss and batted, always my plan to bat first against DY if we have the option. Opening with our usual one day pairing of Conde and Chung. We lost our first wicket on 14 (Chung) holing out to DY’s crafty in swinging opener Wilkinson with Mayor Regan taking the skied ball on the fence which we all thought would be dropped for sure. When Nick fell for a duck with only 2 runs added to our total, we were starting to get the wobbles again and a collapse could be on the cards. The rock Pressley again steadied the ship for us with a stoic 30, combining with useful contributions from Moore, Bowman & Coates in the lower orders. Ring in Steel Jnr finished it off with a strike rate of 100 scoring 9 runs in a last wicket stand that saw us creep to 124 of 34.4 overs. At change of innings none of us really thought it would be enough, however the ground was extremely slow and water logged so our 124 was more like 18 on a dry ground. DY would have to take to the air if we bowled tightly which would bring the chances to win the game and claim minor premiership status. With Rohanek still unavailable due to a slipped disk suffered in a net session back in round 9, Chung took the ball and un-Chung-like said to the skipper that he’d bowl all 7 straight through. Steel had intended to bowl him in two spells, but backed his opening quick’s judgment none the less. And did he what…Chung produced one of the best spells of the season in the context of the match, taking 3/9 off 7 with 3 maidens. This immediately had DY on the back foot and in a panic. Moore kept it tidy at his end (0/17 off 7), Coates followed up with (1/13 off 6), D Steel took a vital wicket on his first ball of a 4 over spell. DY were 6/82 still with plenty of overs the chase the runs. The captain brought himself on and bowled his best spell of the season taking (4/8 off 4) to clean up DY all out for 88 in 29.3 overs. CPCC claim the minor premiership and hit the Brooky pub! At the time we didn’t know it, but this was probably our Grand Final performance. Semi Final - Terry Hills @ Passmore 2 Our Semi was a virtual washout (no play on day 1) and belatedly moved at the associations request on day 2. Had we won the toss we were bowling as TH had intimated they’d call it off if we sent them in. We lost the toss and play commenced with Terry Hills sending us in on day 2 having lost 80 minutes by the time the ground move was confirmed to Kierle Park 2. We would use it as batting practice for the Grand Final the following week. Even with the move and delayed start it proved how vital it was that we claim the Minor Premiership as we suffered our worst batting collapse

Page 24: 57th Annual Report - Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club · 2018. 6. 26. · 57th Annual Report. Agenda 1 President’s opening address 2 Adoption of the 57th Annual Report and financial

of the season up to that point, stumbling to 8/94 in 51 overs, with 3 ducks (including a hat-trick against us). With time and overs passed it ended in a draw, Terry Hills valiantly bowing out and CPCC marching on to face ultimate test vs the old enemy DY RSL in the Grand Final. Grand Final – DY RSL @ Passmore 2 The week leading up to the GF was a flurry of nervous emails between the CPCC skipper & vice. How were we going to pick the side, what was the batting order going to look like, how important it would be to win the toss etc etc. We kept telling ourselves it was just another game, we’d beaten DY in every encounter in the season, we were the stronger side, but in reality it all counts for nothing….. Grand Finals are a totally different ball game and history is just that. We arrived at Passmore on the Saturday to bright sunny skies, a perfect day to bat, everything was going to plan until…….we lost the toss and they batted. Runs on the board in a GF are gold, scoreboard pressure plays its part, and we were to discover this on the Sunday. We welcomed back Rohanek for his first game since going out with the back injury in round 9. His back was fine though he’d been battling with gastro all week so his guts were not. We toiled well and got the early breakthrough of their skipper with the score on 5. Our tails were now up having soon forgotten we’d be batting right now if the toss went our way. The ground was slow and boundaries scarce so the run rate was nothing to worry about. What was worrying was that wickets fell roughly in 30 run partnerships. DY were 5/90 with Lusted (their other opener) the glue in their batting line up, not scoring many or quickly but staying in. We got a couple of quick breakthroughs with their score on 101 & 111, to have them 7 down; if we could wrap up the tail for 10 -15 run we’d be pretty happy with our days’ work. Unfortunately the pesky Lusted continued to be a thorn in our sides and hung around with the tail eventually being the 9th wicket to fall with the score on 153 for a well-made 55 runs. The tail wagged and the last wicket put on another 17 runs to close out DY’s innings at 170 in 66.2 overs. With about 10 minutes of play left in the day we had to see off a precarious 3 overs before we could all have a well-earned beer and plan our batting strategy for Sunday. See it off we did and we finished up 1/0 off 3 with 72 over still at our disposal. Day 2 again was a bright sunny day and had all the hallmarks for us to bat alllll daaaay and knock off the required target. DY’s utilized their first string opening bowlers to get proceedings underway and they set about strangling us. At one stage we were going at less than a run an over and well behind the required run rate. With run hard to come by, pressure was building and the inevitable loss of wickets started to make the reasonable target of 171 for victory a long road ahead. Nick came in and lifted our run rate in typical Nick fashion with a quick fire 30 odd, with plenty of boundaries along the carpet and clearing it. However with the loss of our middle order in quick succession the game was slowly slipping away from the gallant Plateau men. Faulkner played a superb lower order knock of 35 including a magnificent pull for six that anyone would be proud of, well supported by Rohanek who ended up with another not out and the 20 bonus shearers. Looking the complete batsman after finally putting the pre-season batting coaching into practice after months on the sideline with the dodgy back. We fell 75 runs short of the target, perhaps the pressure got the better of us, perhaps DY bowled and fielded better than we did, perhaps they got the run of luck, whatever we can only lament what might have been, reflect on our strong performances all season and look forward to next season. They say in NRL circles you have to lose a Grand Final to win one……..Bring on 2012/13! Rob Steel - Captain

Grade

After winning the U16/17s competition last year, all the boys (and girl) were keen to stay together for another season and start in grade cricket – with some of us already having been in the winning 6th grade team of yesteryear.

We had a very successful season, with Lachie “Gernzed” Peake and Matthew “Butterfingers” Terry finishing within 5 runs of each other for 1st and 2nd respectively for batting aggregate in the comp (419 and 414 runs), with Matt having the best average overall (37.64). In addition, we had 6 of the top 13 batters in the comp from our team, and, after just 4 rounds had 7 batters with 50s to their name. In addition, we had the best 1st, 3rd, 6th and 10th wicket partnerships, including the best overall partnership of 177 (Lachie Peake / Mitch Curran*). With regards to bowling, Mitch “Cap’n” Curran finished first in the comp, with most wickets (30), best average (6.63) and best economy (1.75). Nathan “Lanj” Lange, our other opening bowler, was extremely quick and difficult to play, swinging the ball both ways, finishing with a solid 19 wickets. Actually, kudos to all our opening bowlers – Curran, Lange, Schacher, Peake, and Vestergaard – who comprised probably the quickest attack in the whole comp, indeed defining ‘heat’ bowling.

After winning the minor premiership, we drew the semi final (the first day was washed out) as we bowled DY RSL out for 111 and then held out for 36 overs, scoring just 41 runs, 4 down, to secure our spot in the final, where we beat 3rd-placed Cromer after casually chasing down their total of 100 with just 3 wickets down to take out the premiership. The final series was especially challenging for us as we all had HSC commitments to stay on top of – 2 full weekends of cricket before 2 arduous weeks of half-yearly HSC exams was not a pleasant prospect, so well done team for balancing these tasks so successfully (I’m sure we all nailed our exams).

We were unbeaten in the 2-day format of the game, thanks to consistently tight bowling and great depth in our batting allowing us to dominate; however one-dayers proved a difficult task for us, bringing our only 2 losses, as we struggled to pile on needed runs in fewer overs. That being said, our best win of the season was a one-dayer against DY RSL, as, after an ordinary bowling performance, we were set 210 to win in 35 overs. Thanks especially to a skillful 95 not out from Matt Terry, we chased it down in the very last over only 5 down – probably one of our most thrilling, hard-fought and well-deserved encounters in the 7 years our team has been together.

The other highlights of the season included our round 2 win against Wakehurst, where we chased down 242 with just 7 wickets in hand (and being 3/59 at one point!). Also outstanding was a big hundred (177) from Lachie Peake in round 4, who, may I like to point out, would’ve beaten the club record if not for one club enthusiast who told us the previous record was 174 NOT 179. Considering the heat of that day, and the long grass of Nolans 3 causing countless would-be 4s to finish inches short of the boundary, this was a momentous achievement – needless to say, by the end of it he was dead-set buggered. The other century in the season belonged to Daniel “The Shark / The Massive Beast” Schacher, with 120 at the plateau, bringing up his ton with a huge 6 over the tennis court. A special mention goes to this boy’s favored lofted cover-drive six which proved not only freakish, but a useful tool throughout the season. Daniel was also probably the unluckiest bowler in the whole competition, deserving a lot more than the 15 wickets he took with his quick in-swingers and bamboozling slower ball. Matt Terry was again very consistent this year, with 4 fifties, including that match-saving near-century against DY RSL.

Other special mentions go to our wicket keeper Matt “Dreadies” Clements, a freak-of-nature who catches and stops anything and everything, creates stumpings from nothing, and even proves useful with the bat... sometimes. Also to Sam “Coon” Cheeseman, who, after finishing with the best batting average in the U17s comp last year, unfortunately had a serious knee injury during the soccer season and so was unable to contribute to his full potential this year, however was still able to throw down his always reliable leggies and take wickets. Also to our old coach Glen “Coach” Shaw, an unbelievable contributor to all our success over the years, who filled in when we were players short. And finally to all those I haven’t yet mentioned, who I could’ve written just as much about as those above due to the gratuitous amount of young talent in this side: Paul “DJ Fabs” Fabbro for more solid batting, especially quick runs and big sixes (notably his first ball six into the creek at Nolans 3, immediately following the end of Lachie Peake’s 177 AND the 177-run competition-best partnership between him and Mitch Curran (77)... you can just imagine the looks on the opposition’s faces as the ball soared through the air, priceless); Martin “Aaarrrrr” Vestergaard for quick bowling and slogging like a true tail-ender; Damon “Tuber” Twight, the “player’s player”, for his right-arm breakthroughs and bravely opening the batting each week and... giving it his best; Jack “Biceps” Pearce for his trustworthy slaps down the ground, and Mikaela “Canada” Turik for allowing us to boast about having an international player in our team. Also to Gus Mackenzie for the few times he filled in and his comic relief in slips.

We enjoyed ourselves profoundly this year. Keep in mind this was a 6th grade standard, so, despite our success this season, we’ll just see how we go next time round... playing in a higher grade is a challenge we’re looking forward to (if we get all the boys back!).

Congrats men.

Grade

Yet again, another impressive performance from the development side has concluded with a third consecutive premiership for the club. Under the captaincy of Brodie Elliott, the team ended the season in second place with 7 wins and 2 losses with the top three teams in the compeition being within 3 points of each other on the ladder. Collaroy 7th Grade went on to beat both of these teams in the finals, only conceding 88 runs across both games.

The team consisted of: Experienced players - Toby Horstead, Peter Bonner, Luke Ireland, Greg Bruckard and Andrew Davis. Members of the undefeated U15s Collaroy Plateau Side - Damon Steele, Jake Carden, Glynn Archer and Michael King, as well as their

coach Steve Carden. Members of U16/U17s Junior team - Cameron Baber, Kesheva Ratnavibushena and Ryan Bishop-Perret Young players now out of juniors - Cameron Milling, Adam Powers, Daniel Perini and Brodie Elliott Other junior players- Aaron Peters, Stephen King and Dean Meadows

The team’s season highlights included: The consistent opening partnership through the season of Daniel Perini and Toby Horstead The efforts displayed by Cameron Millings in his first season, taking a season best 6-15 and finishing with a bowling average of under 8 Ryan Bishop-Perrett taking 5-16 and Jacob Carden 4-7 in the grand final to roll Manly Leagues for 24. This being a prime example of the

attacking and tight bowling of the team throughout the season. Energy and enthusiasm brought to the team through the contributions of younger players such as Damon’s fielding and Dean Meadows

wicket keeping. The long spells of bowling by Andrew Davis, keeping pressure on opposition with tight bowling

Conclusion: The performance of the team in the finals showed the improvements the boys have made throughout the season individually and as a team. The team successfully played over 10 current juniors in the club through out the course of the season, illustrating the upcoming and promising talent that will become part of the senior section of the club in years to come.

Masters

“age shall not weary them or the years condemn”

This was our third season in the Sydney masters competition. This season the masters committee introduced official umpires and a ‘no replay’ rule for washouts. The season was ravaged by washouts and on one occasion vandalism at Grahams reserve. We ended up ‘not playing’ six scheduled fixtures.

However given the above, the season was another successful one. A willing band of competitive cricketers enjoyed the Sunday afternoon games played on turf with good spirit. The team finished 11th in a 20 team comp.

Our squad was made up of: Regulars: David Bennetts, Andrew Cameron, Matt Goledge, Rob van Dam, Luke Ireland, John Jackson, David Moss, Robert Minnett. Newcomers: Todd Wright, Kim Woolf and Douglas Campbell Part-timers: Peter Bonner, Bruce Flint, Andrew Coates and Col Huxley Father and son combinations: Steve and Jake Carden, Hayden and Jason Brown. Our left handed opening bowling combination of ‘D’ and Clogs was once again very competitive. Medium pace support was provided by Dave Moss, Luke Ireland, Andrew Coates and Dave Bennetts. On several occasions Andrew Cameron provided very useful slow medium left handed variety. With washouts and batting second (not our preferred tactic) we struggled to get batting consistency. David Bennetts performed consistently up the order. Douglas Campbell and Kim Woolf played some powerful innings in limited appearances.

Thanks to the Manly grade club for arrangements re Grahams reserve. Also thanks to players who regularly carried out administrative duties: Andrew (treasurer), Luke and Cammo (beer sales). We will be going around again in 13-14 so if you are 40 and interested get in touch.!!!

T20

A Team

Four months on from the Twenty20 Cup Grand Final the trophy sits in my room as an appropriate representation of a victory that will remain engrained in the memories of clubmen for many years to come. The cup itself – oversized, bronze in colour and arguably the most impressive of the MWCA trophies reflects the triumph perfectly: incredible but pretty much ridiculous. The tournament involved all the drama of a hattrick, injuries, rain and a super over; and this was all before the Grand Final even began. There is no doubt that a novel could be written on this saga, so forgive me if I struggle to condense this into a one page report. I must preface by stating my thoughts on Twenty20 and its place in park cricket. While this was one of the most amazing moments of my cricketing career, Twenty20 must continue to hold its place as the less significant, side tournament to the Saturday competition. The novelty and drama of Twenty20 is currently being managed in the best way – on the occasional Sunday throughout the season. There is still nothing that beats the purity of the longer form of the game.

The competition began with our only loss – and it was a disappointing and underwhelming one at that. The team had a strong mix of players from 5 different Plateau sides. Bowling first against our nemesis Wakehurst, we performed very well, getting them all out for only 98. The details of what followed will be kept to a minimum as we failed to chase down the target, finishing our 20 overs on 8/90 with only one batsman getting above 10. The third team in our pool, Belrose, withdrew, meaning that we had to win our second game against Cromer B in order to progress. Batting first we put on 132. This was the innings that 4th Grade’s Hamish Evans announced himself as a key hitter in the batting order, with a solid 25. Prolific run scorer Rob Minnett top scored with 35. We thought this was a good, but by no means comfortable total to defend. But another great bowling performance meant that Cromer were never really in it. Eventual player of the series Mick Mackin tore through the top order, claiming an excellent hattrick (4/11 off 4).

A dodgy draw put us back up against Wakehurst in the qualifying final. Yet again the bowlers did the job, restricting them to 113. Our innings was one hell of a roller coaster. At 4/42 we were in trouble, but Hamish steadied the ship and put us on course for victory. A late six from Nirav Patel put victory in our grasp but we were unable to get the final run. The stumps were taken for a run out on the last ball with the scores tied – it was super over time. Mick Trevaskis took the ball for the most important six deliveries of our campaign so far. He did a superlative job; the two Wakehurst batsmen only managed 8. We strapped ourselves in for our over, but the tension was relived before anyone could draw breath after Hamish proceeded to blast the first ball for 6. A 4 down the ground to Nick Buxton sealed the super over victory in only 4 balls. This was the first time I was involved with a victory against this Wakehurst side and the knowledge that we had sent them out of the tournament made it all the more sweeter.

Drama wise the semi-final against Long Reef was relatively insignificant. I must be starting to sound like a broken record, but the bowlers were clinical again. We kept them to 9/115. After a bumpy start Ryan Malam came to the crease and, fuelled by absolutely no sleep the night before, blasted a half century. Nirav continued to build his 6 hitting reputation after he got us home with 2 overs to spare. The grand final would be against a decent Comer side.

Grand final plans were put into disarray when rain forced the match to be postponed to a week later. We lost economy extraordinaire Mick Trevaskis and Brendo to holiday commitments. Further rain the following week resulted in the game being moved, to the dismay of our bowlers, from a flooded Nolans 1 to the batting paradise of the Northern Beaches: Griffith Park. 2 nights prior to the game Brendo, in an unprecedented display of CPCC commitment, announced that he was going to do the unthinkable and fly in from his QLD holiday to play the game. The day itself was a beauty, and the local crowd rolled in and surrounded the impressive new CPCC marquee on the boundary. Cromer won the toss and chose to bat. Drama hit during the warm-up just before beginning the match. Pete Henriksen fractured his pinkie finger and was forced to spend the first part of the game on the sideline. The bowlers were strong again and Pete miraculously made his way back on and into the bowling attack to take a crucial 1/14 off 3. The total was looking meagre until the final over unfortunately went for 20. We needed 143 for victory, which we were confident of doing on the high scoring ground. Dan Schimek was the only top order batsman to fire, wickets fell all around him until Pete produced more heroics coming in a number 8. He persevered through his injury to support Schimek as he belted 66 off 40 balls. Pete was there right through the rest of the innings and had to watch dot balls from the other end squander our chances of victory. Scores were level on the final ball and the umpire’s finger went up for LBW, it was super over time yet again.

This time we would bat first. We were also notified that due to hitting more 6’s than Cromer a tie in the super over would hand us the win. Schimek picked up where he left off, sending the first ball over midwicket for 6. He fell the next ball, and after that we were only able to collect 3 more runs. So Cromer needed 10, or the trophy was ours. The big responsibility of bowling the crucial over was given to Nick Bonner, who had proven hard to get away during the main innings. Ball one was a wide. Ball two went for 4. Ball three a single and ball four another wide. Things were not looking good at this point; they needed 3 off 4. Nick then found his form and 2 dot balls followed. 3 off 2. Next ball Cromer succumbed to the pressure and we took a run out. 3 off the last ball required. Well, it would be 2 more balls because another wide was sent down! 2 off the last ball! The ball was good, the Cromer batsman managed to pick a gap in the infield and they had the first of their required runs comfortably completed. There was no chance of a second though as the throw came in to Minnett at keeper. Only the batsman from the non-strikers end had taken off for the second run, which meant when Rob took the stumps the game was still alive. Finally both the ball and the other batsman set off for the other wicket. Some cool, composed fielding followed, which was amazing considering the situation. And with the Cromer player only inches away from taking victory away from us the stumps were taken and the T20 Cup was ours! The Plateau dominant crowd erupted.

As I look back over what I have written I realise that it’s quite hard for words to do the scenes that occurred on that day justice. The crowd there would have to have been close to the biggest for a game of park cricket in the MWCA. And anyone who witnessed the match would know that they saw one of the most enthralling and ridiculous games of park cricket ever to grace the Northern Beaches. This was one for the history books. Full credit to everyone who played throughout the competition, everyone played a part and the team worked together fantastically as a unit. T20 OGRES

The Ogres had a great inaugural season in 2011/12. We might not have won a game however we were a very keen group of cricketers who had a great time and surprised ourselves by being competitive against all-comers. In regards to cricket we competed well in all games with the highlights being when we took Wakehurst B to the final over and had Cromer A (who were eventually beaten by our CPCC ‘feeder’ team in the final!) under real pressure until the last couple of overs. An idea for a Dad’s team that ‘developed’ over a few beers between Adam Ward, Matt Allam and myself at the 2010/11 Coaches and Managers night ended up being a great success. The Ogres is now an excuse for many social occasions, several new nicknames, being the reigning trivia champions at The Beach Club, an end of season trip and game against Rylestone, golf days and generally just coming together for a few beers and a laugh. Over the season we rediscovered muscles we had forgotten and used large amounts of ice-packs and Nurofen - sponsorship from a pharmacy, physiotherapist or brewery would be most welcome for next season!

On behalf of all The Ogres I would like to thank Dom Wheeler – a great CPCC clubman. Without Dom’s assistance, enthusiasm and cricketing talent the team would not have got started much less been competitive. Dom brought the average age of The Ogres down several years and was extremely tolerant of a bunch of old has-been’s trying to relive our youth. Thank you Dom! Finally, thanks to everyone at CPCC for backing The Ogres.

Beware…The Ogres will be back Bigger (well that’s for sure) and Better (unlikely) in 2012/13. Kim Blacker

Junior Secretary’s Report

Another successful season sees our Club rewarded with the MWJCA Club Championship for the second year running. This award acknowledges the efforts of all CPCC players, coaches and parents. It also highlights the community spirit that we are always keen to promote, along with our strong inter-club relationships that filter through from our most Senior Club members right down to our youngest players.

200+ players registered for Junior cricket at CPCC for the 2011/12 season which translated into 13 Saturday morning teams and a well attended Friday evening In2Cricket program. Numbers were down a little from previous seasons, a disappointing trend which was reflected throughout MWJCA and also across Sydney in general. Several factors are considered to be affecting a drop-off in cricket registrations with CricketNSW and the MWJCA working hard to address these issues. Despite this, CPCC were able to enter teams in all bar one of the Junior age groups with our particular strength being in the higher age groups where many (non school) clubs are struggling to field teams at all. We remain one of the most solid and progressive clubs in the MWJCA.

Rep trials for 2011-12 were held back in March 2011. Squads were selected in each age group, with official training commencing around the end of July. Trial matches were then held during September/October allowing team selections to be finalised ready for the commencement of the rep season at the end of October.

We are always very proud of CPCC Juniors who are selected as MWJCA representative players.

For the 2011-2012 season Rep caps were presented to:

Under 11 DCA J.H. Creak Shield - Adrian Caproni Under 11 President's Cup - Lachlan Burgess Under 12 DCA Arch Cawsey Shield – Isaiah Vumbaca and Hayden Brown Under 13 DCA W.S. Gee Shield – Aaron Stevens, Joel Wood, Alex Bain, Harrison Brock, Jack Pickering and Ellis Raymond Under 13 President's Cup - Umar Ali Under 14 DCA Harold Moore Shield - Glyn Archer, Matt Brock, Jake Carden, Ahbijeet Virdi and Liam Mason Under 14 President's Cup - Keiren Nixon and Lachlan Allomes Under 15 E.G. Weblin Shield - Damon Steel Many of these players also took part in rep carnivals held in Lismore, Ballina and Newcastle over the Christmas holidays. At the conclusion of the season Isaiah Vumbaca, Alex Bain and Jake Carden were also selected respectively in the Under 13's, 14's and 15's Cricket NSW Academy Programs (formerly Emerging Blues) which commence at the end of July 2012.

The Saturday morning competition commenced at the end of September for U10's and up with the Kangas and Under 9's getting underway later in October. The In2Cricket program for our youngest club members continued in its' "twilight" format at Plateau Park on Friday evenings. What a hive of activity with 30+ eager youngsters aged from 4-7 turning up each week for this activity based program that introduces the skills of cricket. Thanks to Col Huxley, Toby Horstead and Adam Pressley who supervised the "coaching" of this program and thanks also to the helpers from our Junior teams who assisted at these sessions - in particular Cam Baber and Kesheva Ratnavibushena from our U17's group.

The fourth CPCC Junior “Tour” saw three CPCC teams head down to Canberra during the 2011 October school holidays to take part in the eight a side T20 Kookaburra Cup run by CricketACT. We had a team in each of the U16's, U14's and U10's age groups in this tournament. While all teams performed well in their respective divisions a huge congratulations goes to Marti Pattinson and her young team for taking out the inaugural U10's division. Unlike the ensuing Sydney summer the weather in Canberra this time around was quite pleasant and dry! The post cricket activities including outings such as kart-racing, High Tea at the Hyatt, and nights out at dinner supplemented the camaraderie around the BBQ and cabins back at the caravan park to ensure that a good time was had by all. Accommodation at the "Capital Country Holiday Village" on the ACT/NSW border has been locked in again as the venue for the 5th Canberra tour in October 2012.

We may have thought that the weather was fickle in the10/11 season but we had no idea what we would have to contend with this season. Rain and closed grounds interrupted the scheduled fixtures on several Saturdays resulting in washed out matches. Add to that byes, breaks for School Holidays and some very bizarre fog and it all became very inconsistent and quite frustrating just trying to get a game happening. Eventually the season was completed (being extended by one week in March) and we were ultimately able to boast some excellent results.

At the MWJCA presentation night in June 2012 CPCC once again featured prominently in the proceedings. The Under 15 "Power" and U14 "Surge" teams were on hand to receive their Premiers' trophies, along with many individual CPCC award winners as listed below.

In the wrap-up for season 2011/12 we had: Under 15's "Power" finishing as Premiers (undefeated) Under 14's "Surge" also finishing as Premiers Under 14's "Force", Under 12/1's "Electrodes" and U10/1's "Megawatts" finishing as runners-up Under 16/17's "Flash" and Under 10/1's "Lightning" finishing in 3rd position on their respective tables, along with some very commendable performances from our other teams. The Under 14's "Surge" team also competed in the mid-week (evening) Weetbix Cup T20 Tournament run by CricketNSW Game scores were agonisingly close - with weather and light issues unfortunately working against the team in a couple of games and leaving them falling short of the finals. The annual Father/Son/Daughter Australia day social match and CPCC ‘Double Wicket’ were unfortunately not able to be held this season due to ground and weather issues.

Contrary to what we experienced throughout most of the season however, the weather for the final day's play and end of season picnic/presentation day on the 24th March enabled us to happily conclude the season under sunny skies. It's always a fitting end to Summer to see such a large contingent of club members - past and present - gathered together at Clontarf to celebrate the season that was. As always a big "thank you" to all those that helped on the day with cooking the BBQ, collecting bread rolls and returning empty crates, collecting sausages, selling raffle tickets, picking up rubbish and all the other necessary tasks. The presentation day raffle raised around $250 which was added to the CPCC funds that will ultimately go towards equipment and facilities to the benefit of all club members.

Throughout the season $423.00 was collected and donated to the McGrath foundation pink stumps campaign. Thank you to all who donated online or contributed to the donation tin. Special commendations to the U14's "Force" and "Surge" teams who donned the pink gear at Nolan's Reserve and collected funds on Pink Stumps Day and to the U10/1 "Megawatts" who did the same at Manly West. On a more personal note this past season provided me with some wonderful cricket related opportunities. In January I was nominated as the CricketNSW Volunteer of the year for the Sydney North Region. This came with an invitation for myself and three others to attend a presentation and pre-match function at ANZ stadium prior to the Thunder v Sixers BBL match. Then followed an invitation to attend the Steve Waugh Medal dinner in March. This truly was a privilege, not to mention a great night out.

The highlight of the season however for me was the opportunity to travel to Sri Lanka with my son Jake in December where he played in an U14's tournament with a team of boys that he had befriended through the Emerging Blues program. What a wonderful way to experience another country's culture as I'm sure anyone who has traveled as part of a cricket (or any other sporting team) tour group will confirm. This type of trip is the pinnacle of the team bonding that occurs between players and parents as part of a team. At the Plateau we can proudly say that we promote this from our youngest Saturday morning cricket teams, to reps, to our Junior tour to Canberra, to our Senior afternoon teams and our Club Ashes tours to the UK. Shared memories and experiences, and lifelong friendships result from many hours spent together around a cricket match. Which leads me to mention that plans are well underway for both Senior and Junior CPCC playing groups to tour the UK in 2013! Winter Cricket has started to gather momentum and with Balgowlah Oval secured this season as a home ground for Manly based teams there really has not been an "off season" for cricket tragics from our Junior and Senior ranks. Two teams ("Manly" and "Manly Power") entered in the U14's North East Div 1 - with CPCC well represented in both teams. Both teams made the finals in their group and the "Manly" team then went on to win the semi final but unfortunately bow out in the grand final finishing runners-up overall.

Registration gets underway at the end of July for season 2012-2013. Here's hoping for a lot more sunshine and dry grounds this coming Summer.

U16/17

Our team was a large squad consisting of players ranging in age from 14 - 16 years old, and so for the majority of our players it was a big step up in age to play U17's. However through hard work at training and teamwork in our matches they showed great improvement. As a result of these efforts we finished a more than creditable third. In fact we were only one win away from being premiers. Seven wins and only two losses adds up to a wonderful season. Congratulations to the players and many thanks to the parents. A special thank-you to Lou Baber our hard working manager, you made my job much easier. U15 Power

Finally after so many seasons together and so many seasons falling just short of that elusive premiership, the boys achieved what they had deserved for so long. Not only did we finish premiers but also went through the competition undefeated with some very impressive performances. The boys sprung out of the blocks early with a tough close win in the first game against St Augustine's Green and then never looked behind them playing some great, entertaining cricket for the rest of the comp. These boys play so well as a team and they support each other so well, it is no surprise to see the success they have had. Every player contributes greatly in one way or another.

Season highlights: Glyn Archer – Has bowled well for a number of seasons with the new ball and this season was rewarded with a lot more well deserved wickets, took 14 wickets going for only 2 runs an over with best figures of 4/12 and 3/10 and along with Damon took out the major association bowling awards. However the highlight of his season was undoubtedly with the bat where he scored his first half century 51 coming in at no 11 in a 95 last wicket partnership with Charlie, also scored 32 in a partnership of 59 with Chris, had an excellent batting average of 37 Max Bertock – Again this season Max showed great improvement where he bowled early in the innings taking important wickets on a number of occasions. Finished the season with 8 wickets at a good average of 12 with best figures of 2/3. Was really consistent with the bat in a number of good partnerships. Top score was 18no twice in partnerships of 48 with Jake and 41 with Glyn. Max has fantastic hands in the field taking 8 catches including 3 in one innings, highest in the team and 3rd in the association. Jake Carden – Played his cricket at a very high standard and captained the team very well mixing his bowlers up every game according to the conditions and the opposition. Took out the association Champion Player award and topped the association batting. Scored 366 runs at an average of 122 with the highlight being his and our team's maiden century 106no which involved partnerships of 109 with Charlie and 48 with Max. Also had scores of 43no, 61, 68 and 35no. Bowled fast and accurately again taking 10 wickets at a little over 2 an over with best figures of 2/5 and 2/1 Wyatt Crawley – After a lean previous season with the ball it was great to see Wyatt bounce back to his best and bowling some very good outswing, rewarding him with 8 wickets at a good average of 13 and best figures of 3/8, 2/12 and 2/15. Probably the highlight of his season was taking one of the best catches you will see with the ball high up in the air and Wyatt running towards the boundary catching it over his shoulder all be it off a no ball! Highlight with the bat was a 41 run partnership with Sam in the last game. Sam Filmer-Ramsay – Sam again batted very well up the order but with all the rain and soggy grounds found it very difficult to score, still he had a very good top score of 32no in our last game which set up the platform for our win, also scored 17 in a 54 run partnership with Dan. Was a surprise packet in the one dayers where he opened the bowling with his spin and it turned out to be very successful. Took 5 wickets for the season but his best figures came when opening with 2/5 and 2/16. Sam is a very good positive talker on the field which is always much needed. Charlie Jormanainen - Continued from where he left off last season with the bat and just improved out of sight. His determination to stay at the crease when he went out to bat was to be admired. 2 of his innings were outstanding, scoring 30no in a 109 unbeaten partnership with Jake that took us from being in all sorts of trouble to a convincing win and this was followed by his first ever half century 57no well supported by Glyn in an amazing 10th wicket partnership of 59. Also chimed in taking 6 wickets with a mixture of spin bowling with best figures of 2/4 Michael King – Due to wash outs and injury only batted 6 times but as always entertained, particularly with his first Saturday morning half century for us down at Lake Park where he scored 57 in what I am guessing was about 20 balls and included a partnership with Dan of 78. Normally shares the wicket-keeping with Chris but it was difficult having him do that because he bowled so well. Has really picked up in pace and bounce and took 10 wickets at the very good average of 8.3 with best figures of 3/8, 2/9 and 2/1 Chris Lawson – Chris handled most of our wicket-keeping again this season and did a great job, improving all the time and taking some fantastic catches. Also very consistent with the bat regularly contributing and being involved in some long partnerships scoring 14no in a 41 run partnership with Jake, 11 in a 29 run partnership with Jake and a match winning 30no in a 59 run partnership with Glyn. Finished up with a very good avg of 23 Liam Mason – Liam was only able to play a few games due to private school commitments, but it was great to have him playing when we could. Liam has turned to off spin with great success, his best spell being a tidy 0/11 off 6 overs Nihaar Nayar – Nihaar joined our team this season and really played some good cricket. Unlucky not to bat more with washouts and the team performing so well but was able to hit the winning run against SCEGS. Bowled really well, accurate and at a nagging pace that troubled the batsman. Best figures of 1/3. Was always courageous in the field taking a couple of good catches. Daniel Priest – Again had a really good season and has developed into a incredibly damaging opening batsmen scoring 183 runs for the season 2

nd only to Jake. Another one of our players to score a half century scoring 56 down at Lake Park in a very entertaining partnership of 78 with

Michael, also had scores of 37, 25 and 46no in a partnership of 54 with Sam and ended up with an average of 30. Switched from bowling spin to a lot more medium pace this season with good success, taking 7 wickets in only 20 overs with figures of 1/1 and 2/6. Damon Steel – Damon has been one of our most consistent batsman for a number of seasons and even though this was not one of has best with the bat he still had some very good innings with scores of 23 and 24 and also 14no in a 55 run partnership with Jake. His bowling and fielding were again outstanding. He shared the top wicket taking award for the association with Glyn - 14 wickets which included figures of 2/3, 3/10, 2/5 and 3/6. Again took some wonderful catches particularly dismissing some very good batsman on the boundary I would like to mention and thank a few of the U15 aged boys from the other team who filled in and contributed so well. Nathan Meischke, James Bourcier, Will Brouggy and particularly Ben Allison who in his first game for us scored 14 and then took 4/2. These boys all contributed to our premiership success.

I would also like to thank all our parents who always provide wonderful support to our team and I am sure, like me, are very proud of what the boys have achieved. In particular Rob Steel (coaching and umpiring), Tony King (coaching and umpiring), Jim Ramsay (umpiring), Graham Crawley (scoring) and Martin Bertok (assisting Graham) and also all the Mums for the coffee runs. I would also like to thank Greg Bruckard, coach of the 16/17’s who we were able to train with during the season, who gave valuable advice and guidance to our players.

U14 Surge

The Surge got off to a slow start once again this year with a loss to Harbord Chiefs, then a win against Harbord Commandos followed by a loss to our traditional rivals Wakehurst Redbacks. Although the signs were there that the team was performing with a far superior run rate against Wakehurst but we ran out of wickets. The team then picked themselves up with comprehensive victory over St Augustine's and a win in the local derby against the CPCC Force. So as we headed into the Summer break the Surge were well placed in the top half of the competition. Notable mentions for the first half include:

Kieren Nixon: 84* vs Harbord Commandos Rd 2 and 51 against CPCC Force Rd 6 Jack Collins: 3/13 vs Wakehurst Redbacks Rd 3 Joel Wood: 49 vs Wakehurst Redbacks Rd 3 and 60 vs St Augustine's Rd 4 Aaron Peters: 67 vs St Augustine's Rd 4 and 79 vs CPCC Force Rd 6 Tim Forder: 3/2 vs St Augustine's Rd 4 and 5/43 vs CPCC Force Rd 6

In the second half of the season weather played havoc with games and the Surge were off to a flying start with a win against the Peninsula Penguins and Beacon Hill where we were unlucky not to win outright. Then a win against the Peninsula Lobsters in first innings in a game that saw the second weekend washed out so all other teams were left with a draw. Our Rd 10 local derby clash with the CPCC Force was washed out. Notable mentions for the second half of the year include:

Nick Parker: 3/15 vs Peninsula Penguins Rd 7 Justin Burt: 3/5 vs Beacon Hill Rd 8

The competition then went into a round robin final series in 20/20 format where after a first round wash out due to poor weather we were up against the Harbord Chiefs. Kieren Nixon (21 off 33) and Aaron Peters (30 off 30) got our innings off to a flying start and ending up with 6/97. Harbord were restricted to 8/74 by a fine bowling display from all our bowlers including a 3/13 from 4 overs by Isaiah Vumbaca. Next up we faced the Peninsula Penguins and managed to put on a strong performance reaching 8/86 off our 20 overs and then restricting Peninsula to 7/50. Strong batting performance from Umar Ali (16 off 15), Joel Wood (22 off 27) and once again tight bowling from all our bowlers made it a difficult task for the Penguins. Which left the final and deciding match against Wakehurst Redbacks the telling game of the round robin. There were three teams that could take out the championship trophy. Harbord and CPCC Force were playing each other and were one point behind us leading into the match. Whoever won out of Harbord and CPCC Force would win the competition if the Surge failed to beat Wakehurst. Wakehurst winning the toss elected to bat and got off to a slow start with some very tight bowling from our designated bowlers Umar Ali, Tim Forder and new recruit Nick Ferris as well as a remarkable catching effort by Jack Collins who took 3 catches and wicket keeping effort by Matthew Lawson securing 2 run outs. However Wakehurst middle order took it to our later bowlers and they ended up posting a very competitive score of 9/95 off their 20 overs. The Surge boys were down on themselves for letting such a great start get away but after a team chat they picked themselves up and went in to bat with the season on the line. The innings did not start well when we lost one of our openers early, however a steadying innings from Kieren Nixon (13) and Eli Cox (17) got us back on track before we lost a couple of quick wickets. Joel Wood came in as our fifth nominated batsman and together with Jack Collins (13) got us within reach. Joel went on to make 34 crucial runs while carrying an injury and when he fell the game was still in the balance. Nick Ferris (3) and Umar Ali (4) made some quick fire runs as well as a controlled 7 runs from Isaiah Vumbaca who scored the winning runs with one ball to spare. The win gave CPCC Surge the Championship and was a fantastic end to a great year. Congratulations to all the boys on a great effort for the year and looking forward to next season. Many thanks to Roy Vumbaca (Coach) and Sheree Nixon (Manager) as well as all the parents who make this such a wonderful team environment.

U14 Force

Well done to all boys that played this year, you all improved as a playing group and I hope you all enjoyed your summer of cricket. We had a very successful season, coming 2nd but playing 1 game less than the winning team which was the other Collaroy Plateau team" Surge". Well done to them, our games against them are always tough and hard fought as they should be. The weather was very unkind this year boys but that is the nature of our sport. Of the 12 players that played this season 9 played rep cricket for Manly. Well done to you all for making reps but unfortunately sometimes that means it is tough for you all to get a bat and bowl in all games. On balance all boys got their fair share.

We played 2 day games, 1dayers and finished the season with some 20/20 games. You guys were outstanding in these last couple of games beating both Harbord and Wakehurst two of the best teams in the comp. Some highlights:

U12/1 Electrodes

Well, the 2011/2012 season has come and gone and the Under 12 Electrodes enjoyed a wonderfully rewarding season. With a blend of long term players and some new blood, the Electrodes performed exceptionally well, finishing the season in 2

nd position, beating the eventual premiers along

the way. The great team camaraderie enabled the boys to play with great spirit and self-belief. Winning aside, as coaches we watched the boys grow into fine young gentlemen who played the game in the right spirit and with dignity, no matter whether we won or lost. Congratulations.

There were some great team performances coupled with individual brilliance. Congratulations goes to all of the team, many of the boys featuring in the association's best bowling and batting awards. Well done chaps as it was a team effort that enabled us to achieve all that we did. Well done to Joshua Smith who won the association’s bowling award, Hayden Brown for achieving the team’s batting award and Adrian for winning the all-rounder’s award.

Special thanks goes to our team manager, Andrew Logan who has been a special part of the team for many years. His continued efforts in creating a positive experience for the boys is to be commended. Unfortunately, we are saddened as this may have been Andrew’s last season managing the boys given Damian will attend private school next year. Andrew, thanks for being a great part of our cricketing family. You have been a great team manager and most importantly, a friend to all of the boys.

To the Parents, Grandparents and Great Grandparent who turned up each week and like us, enjoyed watching the boys grow into special cricketers. A Special thanks goes to Stuart Marsh for his continual scoring throughout the season coupled with bouts of passion on the sideline. Thank you.

Congratulations boys, your achievement was perfect in all aspects of the game of cricket and it was our pleasure to coach you throughout the year. Well done

U12 Neutrons

Another 12 months has passed, and yet another cricket season has come and gone. This was my third season of coaching the ‘Neutrons’ team, and while the results may not be there on the board this year, it was still a highly successful and enjoyable season for everyone involved. This was our team’s first season playing ‘traditional’ cricket, which proved a little difficult for some of the boys to adjust to (it took them a while to start realising that when they’re out, they’re OUT!). However, once they found their feet they started playing some exceptional cricket, notching up their first ever outright win, as well as a couple of first innings victories, to finish the season in a very respectable 4

th place.

Having lost a couple of players from last year’s team, we weren’t sure whether we would even be able to get 11 players on the park, however, after some amazing recruiting from a few of the mum’s, we wound up with a squad of 15 very enthusiastic players for me to try to juggle. Every single one of the boys showed a marked improvement in their skills from our first training session to our last, and the quality of cricket that they played as a team also improved dramatically as the season went on, which is great to see. The batting, bowling, catching, fielding, (sledging) and running between wickets got better and better the more they played, highlighting their commitment to the game and desire to learn & improve each and every week. While there were a couple of games that we really should have won, but somehow let slip through our fingers, the boys learned from their mistakes and came out the other side betters cricketers for the experience. The bowling award this year went to one of our new recruits – Nathan Bain – who bowled with a level of discipline that belied his age, consistently hitting a perfect line and length and regularly picking up wickets just when the team needed it. The batting award yet again went to Joseph Maruca, who backed up his fine debut season with another solid year with the willow, plundering anyone who dared to bowl short at him to the boundary. Noah Gammage, another new player this year, brought a sense of enthusiasm and eagerness to our fielding that had been lacking in the past, holding on to a couple of nice catches and always giving 100% out in the middle (which is hard for an 11 year old to do), and was a deserved winner of the fielding award. I must extend my sincere thanks all of the parents who helped out both at training and at the matches all year, in particular to Anastasia Mayo for doing another superb job as manager. Thanks must also go to all 15 boys for being so keen and committed all year, if they can keep that up for the next five years, they’ll be a hard team to beat.

U11/1 Kilowatts The Kilowatts had a good season after taking the jump up to 1st Division. With half the team playing up an age group and playing some very good teams, we were very competitive. Some good all round performances this year with bat and ball were had by Nick Baber, Michael Werner, Tom Trevaskis, Lachlan Cale and especially Lachlan Brinkman who picked up our All rounder Award figuring strongly in both batting and bowling stats. Some great improvers in the team this year were Bailey Pinney and Ronan Wood (whose enthusiasm lifted the whole team), plus the ever consistent wicket keeping by Patrick Wood who was solid behind the stumps all season. But the catch of the year goes to Lachlan Cale for an amazing effort that Ricky Ponting would be proud of. Our bowling was fairly consistent this year with some good performances by our Gun Spinner Cooper Westbury, Remy Gavagna who took 4 wickets in an innings, and Harry Ireland who just missed out to Nick Taylor who with his variation of both medium pace and spin took out our Bowling Award for the 2nd Year running. Our best perfomance with the bat this year was by far our opener Michael Ryan who retired on a number of occasions and almost reached 50 only to be left stranded, the biggest hitter in the comp by far a real good effort. Congrats boys, thanks again for another good season, but also thanks to all the parents who helped out scoring and especially Mick T, Mike B, Pete B, Grant W, and Cam B, for all your help coaching, umpiring, entering stats on My cricket, field setup etc, it made it a pleasure to coach once again. U10/1 Megawatts

Wow what a fantastic and enjoyable season for the Megawatts in 2011/12. We welcomed a few new faces this season and from the word go, the boys were a team. All the boys have developed their cricketing and strengthened as a unit. It was a delight to listen from the sidelines to all the boys encourage and support one another, to observe the camaraderie from week to week. In October 2011 some of the Megawatts entered the Kookaburra Cup in Canberra in the inaugural U11 Division. It was a team consisting of older siblings who were there already playing and some who were there on holiday. They had never played as a team before. Much to the boys surprise and delight they won the inaugural U11 Division.

Megawatt Magic Moments:- Liam Beyleveldt – consistently put his body on the line in the field every match and at times coming off second best because of it. Solid efforts week in week out. Alex Corcoran – how often did I hear “who is that left arm quick”? Your bowling has developed significantly with a great follow through and you are very consistent with the bat. Kai Davies – your ability to switch from pace to spin, especially with the left-handed batsmen is terrific. Max Grenenger – found your groove and developed into a great bowler this season. Valiantly defended his wicket when he batted. Hudson Hurt – you have just joined us, for so long a mystery name on the team sheet. Your enthusiasm and passion that you bring to each match were infectious. Dylan Lawson – you have developed into a tenacious keeper with some great stumpings & you bowled consistently well each match. Jack Loadman – solid with the bat in the middle. Ran hard between the wickets and consistently supported your batting partner. Great work. Dylan Moran – your bowling has become very consistent this season but the 6 you hit at Allambie is my highlight. Tom Pattinson – led by example in the field. Supported and encouraged all your team mates, taken some freaky catches, and has been consistent with your bowling and batting. Ben Schultz – your accuracy and consistency with the ball has been great to watch. Your uncanny ability to snare crazy catches is fantastic. Noah Vumbaca – with your wacky rolled up trousers each week, your consistency with the ball and bat is fantastic and your passion in the field is terrific. Jakob Wollaston-Hess – you lulled the opposition into a false sense of security being the littlest in the Megawatts line up. Your uncanny ability to snare wickets is a delight to watch. Congratulations to you all on an outstanding season

U10/1 Lightning

The 2011-2012 season was another very enjoyable season. The players all contributed to the team. We welcomed several new players to the team and it didn’t take long for them to show their skills and feel part of the team. The boys continued to build on existing skills in all facets of the game. The format of the game this year was different in that they played with a hard ball and were ranked on a ladder. We were delighted to finish 3rd. Well done boys!

Team spirit was once again high and the boys all worked together as team members but also as good mates.

Looking forward to another great season. Thank you to all the parents who contributed to the successful team, especially Lloyd Burgess for assisting with coaching and scoring every week.

U10/2 Thunderbolts

The Thunderbolts really improved over 2012 and if it had not been for the weather we would have won several more games in the second half of the season. The Thunderbolts came together as a result of merger between last year’s Thunderbolts and Gigawatts. After losing several of their more experienced teammates from past seasons, all the boys really stepped up and the team was always competitive. This is especially pleasing as about half the team could be playing in the age group below.

Josh Howard was our Player of the Year for a great season with bat (only out twice for over 90 runs) and ball (5 wickets). Riley Ward was Best All-rounder with 87 runs and 5 wickets in a very consistent season. Max Drewe won our Most Improved award with 5 wickets and nearly 60 runs for the season.

The most pleasing thing to see over the season was the improvement and contribution from all the boys and some of the highlights for each of them are listed below:

Charlie Woodman: Scored 60 runs and was one of our best bowlers all year. Josh Sauer: Really improved with 41 runs and his best bowling being 1/14. Kai Horsnell: In limited games scored over 30 runs and was only out 3 times. Luke Morris: Two top scores of 17 and 4 wickets for the season. Max Kocass: Top run scorer with 96 and 4 wickets – a great effort. Patrick Blacker: A big improver with 3 wickets and 47 runs for the year. Tom Shepherd: Scored 47 runs and was only out 3 times for the season. Sam Allam: Scored 47 runs with his best bowling being 1/18. Sam Wallis: Some great hitting with 69 runs and 3 wickets. Will Silburn: A great first season with 47 runs and 3 wickets. A big thank you to Debbie Allam and Tanya Sauer for managing the Thunderbolts in 2012 and to Vicki Carden for all her efforts. Finally, I would like to thank all the parents who helped with coaching, scoring and umpiring during the season – it made my job very easy and was greatly appreciated by all the boys. Look forward to seeing everyone back in 2012/13!

U9 Gigawatts & Electrons

N.B. Registration numbers for Under 9's at CPCC this season left us in the situation where we had way too many players for one team but were just short for forming two teams. Given that U9's does not have a competition table (or record individual player statistics), plus the nature of the draw (two pools with alternating timeslots) it was decided to enter two teams ‘Electrons’ and ‘Gigawatts’ with a core group of players in each team. All the boys trained together as one squad and on any given Saturday players were able to interchange between teams and/or back up for a second game as desired or required. Many thanks to Nirav Patel (CPCC 4th Grade) for completing his Level 1's and taking on the coaching role with these keen youngsters - which thereby involved mid-week training and overseeing two matches each Saturday morning! - V.C. Under 9's Electrons and Gigawatts 2011-2012 Both teams had an enjoyable season. Even before Round 1 got under way the boys started training hard and began learning new skills. Both teams were strong in their own way. Gigawatts team consisted of Harry Arcus, Mitchell Arcus, James Buchanan, Harry Burke, Ben Eady, Lachlan Hegarty, Liam Cameron and Harrison Angus. They had some strong players. James Buchanan won the All- Rounder Award and was the highest scorer in the team. Special mention to James' Dad who helped him to improve his game in the backyard and St. Matthew’s Farm Nets. Ben won the batting Award. He improved a lot with his batting style getting the second most runs from this team. Harry Burke won the bowling award. This season he improved so much he could swing the ball better than most of the other kids in the whole competition. Harrison joined the team before the end of the season. He had never played cricket until then and he also showed some great potential with his batting and fielding. Mitchell Arcus showed some talent for wicket keeping. All players contributed to form a great team, as did the parents, who were all so helpful to all the kids. Special mention to those who helped me a lot and also gave me lifts to the games (Luke Arcus, Marc Eady, Lou Hegarty). Thanks for also helping out with scoring/umpiring each week.

"Gigawatts" Season Awards

Electrons team consisted of: Ahmad Ali, Charles Prestidge, Fin Horsnell, Oliver Luke, Jake Gamborg, Tom Williams, Charlie Tompson, Nick Gamborg, Nimesh & Nilana De Silva. In this team, some of the boys were taking up cricket for the very first time. The training sessions were filled with great enthusiasm. The team started the season losing a few games but once they started to get the hang of it , they started to win almost all games. Nimesh and Nilana played for both teams. Nimesh is a great spinner, he can turn the ball both ways (he might learn to bowl Doosra). He is also a terrific batsman, his shots were textbook shots just exceptional. He took many wickets with his spin bowling where many opposition teams could not face it. Nilana was the fast bowler. His bowling had many batsman scared. Jake Gamborg played his game very seriously. He is great wicketkeeper, not even once letting that ball past him.

These teams could do some damage in a few years time. They showed me great talent and team effort. All of the boys should be extremely pleased with their efforts. Well done guys, your willingness to listen and learn helped you all achieve some sensational things. A special thanks to Vicki Carden for organising the team. As coach, I am pleased to see the boys enjoy themselves and for them to love their cricket. I am sure that there will be some lifelong friends forged which will be a fantastic reflection of just how well they have bonded this year.

KANGA ‘Sparks’

The Kanga "Sparks" were a great group of up and comers and a pleasure to coach. Hopefully we can keep a core group together so we can meld a team of great talent.

The skills developed certainly came through over the summer and we can hopefully work on these for next season To see this improvement was really a pleasure to be a part of. So thanks to all the players for their commitment and parents for support, scoring, coaching help etc..

MILO in2CRICKET

MILO in2CRICKET is Australia’s national junior development program for boys and girls not yet involved in under age cricket competition. The program incorporates high participation with skill development. The program runs over 8-12 weeks, with sessions running for 60mins. Whilst the aim of the program is for children to develop their skills, there is always an emphasis on fun and enjoying cricket. All the equipment used is designed for young children and is safe and easy to use. Each child receives a Give-Away pack that includes a bat, ball, bag, hat, t-shirt, cd-rom and a few other promotional items. The recommended cost of the program is $50. MILO in2CRICKET is the first step in a child's long term involvement in the game of cricket. CPCC’s MILO in2CRICKET centre is linked to our junior cricket club and will lead into underage competitions. Contact Vicki Carden for more information on CPCC participation

Co-ordinators Report

This season was my second as coordinator of the The In2Cricket program as it continues to expand with new kids becoming involved. A number of players were in their 2

nd year of In2Cricket and it was great to see their enthusiasm grow and skill level develop.

Whilst it is difficult to structure too much in the way of teaching the finer points of the game, as crowd control occupies much of the session time, the squad progressed well over the program with development of their fundamental cricket skills. The one hour Friday evening sessions focus on basic batting, bowling & fielding skills developed through games and activities with some introduction to cricket ‘culture’ elements thrown in. At the end of the day, participation and being active is the name of the game at this age so throwing a bucket of balls out for the kids to chase is one of the more popular activities. For any of our young In2cricketers or their parents reading this, its time to test the some of cricket mantras chanted at the end of each session by filling in the blanks:

Catches win m _ _ _ _ _ _ Keep your _ _ _ on the ball P _ _ _ _ _ _ _ makes perfect _ _ _ zat? I hope you all got 100% on those. If you couldn’t remember some, answers will no doubt be provided at the first In2Cricket session in 2012.

Many thanks to dads Toby Horstead and Adam Pressley for taking on Assistant Co-ordinator roles, Dom Wheeler for standing in as Coordinator to cover our absence and the regular coaching support by Kesheva and Cameron during the summer.

The enthusiasm of the boys is endless so no doubt we’ll see many return for another season before ‘graduating to Kangas. The session is great fun and I encourage all parents to join in where possible.
