ST. JOSAPHAT UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL VOLUME 47, ISSUE 35

FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE

THEOTOKOS

On Saturday, September 8, we celebrate the

feast of the birth of the Mother of God. The

record of her birth is not found in the Bible.

The traditional account of the event is taken

from the apocryphal writings which are not

part of the New Testament scriptures. The traditional

teaching which is celebrated in the hymns and verses of the

festal liturgy is that Joachim and Anna were a pious Jewish

couple who were among the small and faithful remnant-“the

poor and the needy”-who were awaiting the promised

messiah. The couple was old and childless. They prayed

earnestly to the Lord for a child, since among the Jews

barrenness was a sign of God’s disfavor. In answer to their

prayers, and as the reward of their unwavering fidelity to

God, the elderly couple was blessed with the child who was

to become the Mother of the Messiah-Christ.

The feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos is a

glorification of Mary’s birth, of Mary herself and of her

righteous parents. It is a celebration as well of the very first

preparation of the salvation of the world. For the “Vessel of

Light,” the “Book of the Word of Life,” the “Door to the

Orient,” the “Throne of Wisdom” is being prepared on earth

by God himself in the birth of the holy girl-child Mary.

We will have Vespers on Friday evening, September 7th at 7pm.

RECTORY OFFICE HOURS

The Rectory Office will be closed Friday, August 31st through

Tuesday, September 4th, 2018, Labor Day weekend.

ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE

Prayer is not just a way of getting what we want, but also a way of becoming what God wants us to be. We see this

in the lives of Saints Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Mother of God and the grandparents of Our Lord, Jesus

Christ.

Saints Joachim and Anna were married in Nazareth where they lived in faithfulness ion to God and each other.

They were known to give generously to the Temple and to the poor, yet, they were saddened because they were not

blessed with children.

Tradition tells us that on one occasion, after they were both already very old, they were in Jerusalem to offer

sacrifice in the Temple. Joachim was not permitted to offer sacrifice because he had no children. Joachim and Anna

were rebuked and scorned by those in the temple and their childlessness became a source of sadness and shame for

them both. Yet, they prayed earnestly to God for a solution, Who answered their prayer in a most unexpected and

delightful way! Even in her advanced age, Anna conceived and was with child. She was to give birth to a child who

would become the Mother of God!

God answered their prayers and at the same time incorporated them into His plan for the salvation of mankind. Let

us remember that God knows what we want - and what we need – even before we ask or are aware of it. And, the

answer to our prayer may not only be for our benefit, but for the benefit of others as well.
