Albert Edward of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, better known as King Edward VII, was the son ofQueen Victoria and Prince Albert, and was born on 9 November 1841 in Buckingham Palace.Edward VII was a great lover of Paris and was known in French society as Edouard VII.

He was a refined and elegant man, and a great follower of fashion. It was to his special orderthat the three-piece suit constructed in a single fabric was created in Paris, and to this day theFrench refer to such attire as an Edouard VII. Paris offered him all that he could wish for, not onlyin the wealth of its cultural and artistic life but also its vibrant nightlife. Edward VII had lastingadmiration for female singers and actresses: most famous among his many conquests were thetalented French actress Sarah Bernhardt, the great Australian singer Helen Mitchell, betterknown as Nellie Melba, and the society hostess Alice Frederica Keppel. Alice Keppel was his favouritemistress, and their friendship lasted his whole life – so strong was it that Queen Alexandra, Edward VII’s wife, invited her to attend the King as he lay on his deathbed. Alice Keppel is alsothe maternal great grand mother of Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall.

Late nineteenth-century France was a flamboyant period, filled with new discoveries and astonishingand unexpected changes in many fields, including fashion, architecture, travel and technology, andit was during this very period that the Edouard 7 hotel opened its doors for the first time. It wasconstructed in the Haussmann style of the neighbourhood, and appealed to the exuberant tastesof a wealthy clientele through the luxurious and elegant accommodation it offered.

In 1877, Edward Prince of Wales, that lover of Paris and future king of the United Kingdom, made the hotel his Parisian base from which he could explore the city, admire the view from thebalconies, keep up the social whirl at the Opéra Garnier and visit his aristocratic friends wholived in that area of the city.

The Hôtel Edouard 7 has just been totally renovated by designer Christophe Daudré: a 3-yeartransformation that reveals a concept unique in the hotel world: the production of a theme-basedCouture collection.

Each bedroom is a jewel designed like a figure to be dressed, in which the subtlety and refinementof the details combine with the dramatic use of materials and rich colours. A short distancefrom the Opéra Garnier, Christophe Daudré has followed a central theme between contemporaryelegance and the traditional style of the place and retained a certain French-style elegance.Silk, leather, velvet and cashmere have been used together to decorate the bedrooms in headyshades: green, ruby red, blue, taupe and gold. In this sophisticated, welcoming setting, guestsenter the world of the man, Edward VII, as if it were his private home. Despite its historic Haussmann-style building, the Hôtel Edouard 7 offers large bedrooms in allcategories and a high proportion of suites. The 69 rooms and suites are divided between three“Couture” floors and four “Edward 7” floors, offering a wide range of decors and colours thatmake each room unique.

The four “Edward 7” floors are inspired by the jewellery world of the Place Vendôme, a shortwalk from the hotel, to create a precious setting. Guests enjoy the soothing atmosphere offeredby the shades of blue on the first floor, “Sapphire”. The rooms on the second floor, “Emerald”, are carefully decorated with bed linen and velvet in shades of olive and jade. On the third floor, the atmosphere is simpler with shades of white and taupe and touches of red, purple and magentarepresenting the brilliance of rubies. Finally, on the fourth floor, “Citrine”, we are reminded of theluxury of the place in rooms where the dominant colour is golden yellow.

On the three “Couture” floors, ceremony is the order of the day with rooms and suites full ofcharacter, exuberant and boldly decorated. The combinations of colours and materials offer areal lesson in fashion and celebrate the “couture” style of the Saint-Honoré district. Every detailhas been designed to master the space and harmonize the decoration. The Hotel is full of surprises:reinterpreted lacework on certain items of furniture, paintings on the curtains, a transparent slidingdoor, marble that brings light and refinement to the bathrooms, an upholstered wall, cashmererugs, a Prince of Wales seat, poetic notes written on the walls, the names of Edward VII’s mistresses(Melba, Alexandra, Lily, Sarah, Alice) given to five suites…

The hotel’s transformation has been accompanied by a repositioning of the gourmet restaurant. The stylish new decoration is like an invitation to come and dine in the contemporary kitchen ofEdward VII’s house. The French-style service confirms the elegance of the place, while the foodcelebrates tradition with classic dishes made with wholesome regional products. An expressmenu is available at lunchtime for clients from the Opéra district.

A photo of the Opéra Garnier, the nearby monument iconic of the district, acts as a trompe-l’oeildecoration and sets the tone for the room, with its white, gold and chocolate colours enhancedwith touches of Victorian blueThe young chef, Rémy Fourmeaux sees the opening of the new restaurant as an opportunity toassert his identity and offer a form of cuisine that reflects his image. He aims for unclutteredpresentation and an enlightened use of carefully-chosen organic, local and seasonal products.

Simon Peskine has a very similar approach to the wine list. He has been the director of cateringat the Hôtel Edouard 7 for the last year after a career in some of Paris’ luxury hotels (MandarinOriental, Plaza Athénée) and learned his trade with David Biraud (France’s candidate for the titleof “World’s Best Sommelier” in 2016). A great deal of attention has been paid to the service. To make it lively and bustling, Simon Peskine(a former finalist for the Georges Baptiste Cup for the “Best Young Maître d’Hôtel in France”) hasbreathed new life into the service and brought the carving and serving techniques up-to-date(carving, flambéing, etc.).“La Cuisine de l’E7” promises a delightful gourmet experience, between high-quality French cuisineand meticulous, refined service.

ANNE JOUSSEPresident of the B Signature hotel & Resorts and amember of the owning family. For more than 20 yearsshe was an insurance broker for major French industrialgroups and at the same time a Judge at the commercialcourt (and, incidentally, one of its youngest ever members),before taking up the hotel business in 2003.

She transformed the Domaine de la Bretesche (in Brittany- www.bretesche.com), a property bought by her fatheron love at first sight, into a luxurious and charming resortwith a starred restaurant, magnificent private salons andone of the finest golf courses in the west of France.

Also in 2003, she encouraged her family to buy thenow well-known Hôtel Bel-Ami (www.hotel-bel-ami.com), which had attracted her by its ideallocation in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, in Paris. A further dream location was the HôtelEdouard 7, which she has remodelled in a fashion that combines history (that of Edward VII ofthe United Kingdom) and the flamboyant luxury of the Haussmann era, yet which entirely catersfor the needs of the twenty-first century. In June 2010, the group acquired the Hôtel de Sers (www.hoteldesers-paris.com), a 5-star babypalace just off the Champs Elysées. These hotels form the backbone of the new Bessé Signature group, whose philosophy is toprovide hôtels dans l’air du temps – hotels in the spirit of our times.Anne Jousse plans to develop the group through cultivating the personality of each establishmentand a spirit that comes from family ownership, which for her is a determining factor in offeringher clients the very best quality of service: this has been her guiding principle since the start of her career in insurance. December 2012, the group acquired the Hôtel Vernet (www.hotelvernet-paris.fr), in Rue Vernet, close to the Hôtel de Sers and to the Champs-Elysées.Following major restoration work, the Vernet opened its doors to guests in March 2014.

Finally, in last February, the Montalembert Hotel joined Bessé Signature, it is a 5 star hotel located in the Left Bank, not far from Bel A mi Hotel.
