A series of moves were created to isolated
key elements, waterscapes, roadscape and
folies, of the site at Heywood. These
elements were then placed on an imaginary
landscape which we were able to manipulate
to help develop the hotel landscape.
Site at Heywood, Laois, Ireland.
Site at New Delhi, India. Hybrid Moves between Heywood and New Delhi
Various axes existed between the sites which contained a
similar linear layout We began to look at potential
anchorages in which we could use to provide connections
between the details and axis which would provide a final
overlay of the two sites on one another.
Connections were made between Heywood House and the
Viceroy’s House also. We began to look at the scaling
factors between the two sites and further ways in which
we could combine the different elements.
A catalogue of architectural details were
then created through a similar method with
the Viceroy’s House. These details were used
to create a layout which would eventually
drive the placement and function of our
hotel.
The Readers Hotel is a hybridization of the libraries
within the Vicegral Palace, New Delhi and the garden
compartments present at Heywood House, Laois. A
collection of private library compartments will allow
spaces of recollection and thoughtfulness for the
guests, with books within the libraries providing the
gateway to these rooms. The compartments will depict
installations within the landscape, allowing for
internal and external reading spaces, bedrooms and
other rooms.
The Reader’s Hotel - The Library Compartments.
Within the development of the Reader’s Hotel the
architectural elements which were created came through a
overlaying of spaces from the Viceroy’s house. These
spaces included bedrooms, libraries and office spaces.
The final move within the development of the Reading
Hotel was to isolate the horizontal walls facing Heywood
House. The walls carried the architectural charge of the
connection between the two sites, framing the view of
Heywood House, while also housing the function of the
spaces they defined. They would become active in there
movement, enclosing and revealing spaces
The walls which defined the spaces were then isolated, and designed to include all the functions of the
hotel. They contained fold out beds, reading compartments and hinged bookshelves. A specific wall was
modeled at 1:2.

THE GAME
The premise is that throughout Carroll’s work, questions concerning the position of the body in relation to its surroundings— the possibility for one to forge a sense
of place—are recurrent; one is constantly reminded that one’s perception of space, as well as one’s understanding of where one stands, are phenomena
In order to make sense of such situating, we will establish a “GAME-BOARD” out of the elements of wood to be cut from the exhibition table (not literally), and
establish a matrix within the Hallway of Newman House that initially allows for the exploration of new trajectories and geometries within the Hallway itself, whilst
then forming a physical construct to sit within/on top of/below the allocated opening of the table itself.
