Exchange Traded Instruments are investments that are openly traded on a stock exchange such as shares, investment trusts and exchange-traded funds. They cover a broadrange of asset classes and can give exposure to specific markets, sectors or investment strategies. Many of them track an index in order to provide a return.If you would like to add more money to your cash account, read our guide on how to add cash here.

Go to the Fidelity homepage Select Log in Log in with your usernameand password

www.fidelity.co.ukHomepage link: If you have previously created your own usernamethen please use that.

If you don’t have online access, you can register onthe link at the bottom of the page.

You will then be presented with the ‘Open anaccount’ page.

GETTING TO THE BUY PAGE


Select Invest Now If you have more than oneaccount, select an account

Select Buy

You can also access the page through‘My accounts’, ‘Manage investments’ and then‘Buy, sell, switch’.

If you were viewing a particular account beforeyou selected ‘Invest Now’, the account will beselected on this screen for you. Please make surethis is the account you want to invest in.

Select Add investments Enter the name ofyour investment

Add the investment by selectingthe name or +


A green tick will be displayed next to the investmentname to indicate it has been selected for investing.

The search will find all results that contain yourtext. For example, if you type ‘Fidelity’, all resultscontaining ‘Fidelity’ will appear. You can also finda specific investment by searching its ISIN or SEDOLnumber.

Your initial searches will show all types ofinvestments by default. Remember to choose‘Exchange-traded’.

Select Done once you haveadded your investments

You can also buy by quantity of units/shares byselecting this option. This will open a new screenfor you to choose the quantity.

You may also select the ‘X’ in the top right handcorner of this box.

Enter the amount you wish to invest.

Please note: Exchange-traded instruments can onlybe bought by amount and not by ‘% of Lump Sum’.

WHAT IS A MARKET AND LIMIT ORDER


CHOOSE BETWEEN MARKET AND LIMIT ORDER

Market orderA market order will appear as default when the market is open and will show you the latest buyprice for the exchange-traded instrument.

You'll be provided with a quote (guaranteed for 15 seconds) based on the latest price of theshares you wish to buy or sell.

Limit orderA limit order allows you to buy or sell at a price set by you. This can either be higher or lower thanthe latest market price. Your order will be placed automatically once the set price is reached orexceeded. If your set price isn’t reached or there is an operational reason why the deal can’t beplaced, your order will expire at the next market close without an order being placed.

Limit orders expire at market close the same day as the limit order was set (or the next marketclose if the order is placed outside of market hours).

If you are investing outside of market hours and want your order to complete as soon as themarket opens you need to set your limit order higher than the latest price to buy, or lower than thelatest price to sell. Prices can move significantly when the market opens so it’s important to set anappropriate buffer from the latest price. For example, if the latest price of ‘stock A’ is 100p and youwant to buy when the market opens regardless of price, then you could set the limit order at 130p.If you are looking to sell ‘stock A’ regardless of price you could set the limit order at 70p.

Remember, if your set price is reached when the market opens your order will execute at theprevailing market price. If your set price isn’t reached, your order will expire at the next marketclose without an order being placed.

Confirmation of your order


You will receive a confirmation once your orderhas been placed. You can save a copy of yourconfirmation by selecting ‘Print/Save’.

From here, you will also get the option to placeanother order or go to your account summary.


Please read all of the terms and policies listed.Once you are happy with everything, select the boxprovided to show that you have read andaccept these.

A quote will be generated for you and you’ll have15 seconds to accept it based on the informationyou have provided us. Once you are happy witheverything, you can place your order.

Choose your limit price Review and confirm beforeselecting Place Order

Confirmation of your order


You will receive confirmation of your order andshares will be purchased automatically once theset price is reached. Limit orders expire at marketclose on the same day as the limit order wasplaced (or the next market close if the order isplaced outside of market hours). You can save acopy of your confirmation by selecting ‘Print/Save’.

You can buy at a price set by you. This can eitherbe higher or lower than the latest market price.You can also buy by quantity by selectingthe ‘Quantity’ tab.

If there are any changes required, please do soas you will not be able to change them once youhave placed your order.
